Seems like more people would be interested in playing a Moon Elf, so that makes the race a commodity.
No reason to purchase the Sun Elf if it's less desirable.
Actually i dont really care about new races, because i have 5 chars, 5 class. There is no need for another character, i wont make another DC just because of the race LOL. So those who can make 5 chars before aug 22, then there will be no actually need for new races. We will have 10 races for only 5 class, and that is sad.
I can hardly belive that campaign system was more important than new class OR balance / fix the game! +1 class = new FRESH 200+ hours gameplay, new experience in all dungeons / pvp. New campaign system = 40 hours gameplay or much less!

. . . . . I'd much rather buy new classes and races out-right than pay for content. I feel all new races and classes that are not free should be purchasable in the Cash Shop directly and not only obtainable through an expensive Pack, regardless if they are more-or-less just a new skin of a free race.
. . . . . $60.00 to me, is a whole new game. I understand the package comes with a handful of goodies but when those goodies are equivalent in price to a top-end brand new game, complete with content, then something is wrong with the pricing model of individual store items in the cash shop. There should be no reason to charge this much for these things, in my opinion, unless the package was a complete expansion - which it is not.
. . . . . I wish they would consider putting up each individual item in these packs in the cash shop for individual sale.
On to my gripe on Moon Elf marketing:
. . . . . Also, I feel it is backwards to charge for the Moon Elf. It should be the Sun Elf that is "more special"(if one of the two must be marketed in such a way) for the most common elven sub-race in the Realms are the Moon Elves. Long ago, most of the Sun Elves retreated to Evermeet and other places of seclusion during and after the Crown Wars, thousands of years ago. It was the Moon Elves and Wild (Sylvan/Green) that spread out across the mainlands and make whole communities. Many Sun Elves did remain and continued populating the Mainland, do not get me wrong. Just not on a scale that would make them more common than the Moon Elves.
. . . . . If any of the other sub-races should be make this "rare" or "special" it should be the Sun Elves or Sea Elves, just most certainly not the Moon Elves despite the fact that Cormanthyr (Myth Drannor) has been rebuilt. Even back in its height, the majority elven sub-race back that were Moon Elves.
. . . . . I feel this decision goes against Forgotten Realms Lore and makes a false preconception to new players to the Realms on how common (or in this case, uncommon) Moon Elves actually are.
At one point one starts feeling that it's just easier/better to pay a flat fee than be extorted to pay for every little thing. Considering how important character-building is both to D&D and most MMOs including NW, I would consider charging for a new race or class roughly equivalent to charging for a quest line.
Naturally, it's still a valid type of monetization used by same game. But if they do that, it's morally wrong and generally false to advertise the game as a free-to-play game. It becomes purchase-to-play at that point.
The Pack is what I referred to as "aggressive marketing". This is currently my biggest gripe (after the fact that the races are apparently nothing but a cosmetic option now, even though Moon and Sun elves are supposed to be vastly different). It seems silly to limit something as important as a player race to an "exclusive" pack priced like a new AAA game.

This is what it boils down to though, F2P games will charge for a lot of things including races and sometimes classes. Games like DDO and LOTRO charge for a whole lot more then that as well. If any of this is news to you then I would suggest getting out of the F2P market now as it just gets worse as the years go on.
And if a race is such an important thing to you then its value goes up, which is why CryPWE will charge for it. For some, like me, a race doesnt matter much in a video game.
I like f2p because I have options. I can pay as much or as little as I want. I'm free to play whenever I want without feeling like I wasted money this month and only logged in twice.
People pining to pay subscription fees strike me as... bizarre.

This is not an uncommon sentiment, a response to the constant pressure this game places on free players to pay and then pay more. Beyond even the normal dirty tricks employed through out the game there is the implicit promise that if you like it and really want it, it will cost you.
This isn’t so bad for the PVP crowd because they will never have to pay to have their spawn points walled off or to que up for a match. But for anyone interested in a character, in roleplaying or the environment of the game it is clear now that some of that will not be freely available.
So instead of being free to play, the game is now just sort of free to play. And I don’t see that changing for the better.
Don’t like players wanting essential elements of a free to play game to be free? Take it up with Cryptic.

More people are interested because for 30 years "Moon Elf" has been the default player character Elf race in the Forgotten Realms, and Wood Elf and Sun Elf have been variant races, so it doesn't matter that the differences are mostly cosmetic. The majority of people who have played an Elf in the Forgotten Realms prior to 4e played Moon Elves and that's what they expect to play in a Forgotten Realms setting. Charging for races is one thing, but putting a core Forgotten Realms race behind a $60 pay wall "because it's a popular player character race" is a very shady move.
More Elves that nobody asked for. More $60 packs to line PWE/Cryptic's pockets full of money. This company and game is only in it for the $$$, not to make a quality game that the players and customers would be happy with.

people willing to burn hundreds of dollars on the mere chance of maybe getting an item strike me as corporate stockholme syndrome sufferers.

Which is weird because so far I'm happy. A few things need fixing of course but overall I'm still enjoying the game. Sorry to hear you are not. Have a good day!
This is just another cash-grab scheme. $60 can buy you 3 games on Stream. Are you really going to spend $60 on a skin? and really a freaking Moon Elf? That's the best they could do? That must have been a stretch in the art department. How is it different then the elf we have now? Different hair color? Rofl. Suckers are born everyday.

I think we're basically saying the same thing.
If it was Sun Elf for $60, there would be way less pressure for players to make the purchase.
You put the cost on the item that players want the most.
That's the way capitalism works. And especially makes the most business sense for a game that is F2P.
They gotta get their money from somewhere.
Not that there's a ton of "RP" in Neverwinter anyways.
Dunno, Sun Elves sound and look better for me. I like the bright colors.
Honestly, this fluff is so superficial I can't imagine myself buying that pack with moar useless stuff taking up space in bank
Well check this out.. *Ahem* PWE only acts on their stock prices and business models, correct? More than likely. If what everybody says about it being a rip off is true, they will see it because they will have a bigger hunger than usual in their pockets.
With this strategy one of two things will happen, people will continue to pay for useless HAMSTER, "but mooooom I want the tiger so I can pwn in pvp!" "I MUST LOOK COOLER THAN ANYBODY EVER!!" Etc.
Nobody will buy anything, "Pffft $35 to run fast? That's ok, I'll just go run CN a couple times." Then they patch it. "Lol I'm still going to go run CN a couple times."
Now after this, two more things can happen. PWE Will not pull their head out of their *** and continue to do things like raise the price and lower the content. This is pandering to the highest denominator, rich kids with mothers, military with no financial management returning from deployment, what have you.
Or, and I hope to god, PWE pulls their head out of their asses and realizes long term survival of an MMORPG is not to make it exclusive to a certain group of people. I may not be able to buy $60 worth of reskins, but shoot, I'll GIVE you $5 as a "Thank you for making an awesome game and being a great company!" As I'm sure, MANY people would. We may have pockets but they're not very deep, which is why we enjoy F2P games.
