The shortcut didn't work, but using the launcher in the Cryptic game folder worked. After that, I closed the patcher and now the shortcut works as well.

Got this problem today, but I somehow "fixed" it by skipping the launcher and just opening the game .exe itself and tryed logging in directly from it.
It did not log in, but I successfully opened the launcher after that!
Thread isn't that old, so thought i would revive it. Rather humorous actually as have been humming and hawing and finally decided to buy some zen and get some keys to unlock the nightmare boxes I have saved up; but I can't log into the game. Guess I will take this as a sign.
I got this problem today as I was trying to log in for the first time ever. I was not able to log in to the forum either with Chrome, but FF worked fine and so did Chrome in incognito mode. I cleared my Chrome browser history for today and did a dnsflush and after that everything worked OK.
i have tried everything listed above and still not working there for it must be a problem on PWE's side.. so plz fix the issue i just got my GWF to lvl60 and would like to continue playing..........thank you
i was able to play the game a while ago, but when i logged out and tried to log in again i receive this error "Unable to authenticate: couldnt even attempt to connect to account server connection" is the server down or something??
Unable to authenticate. Verified with my guild everyone is having this issue. Flush DNS, bypassed Launcher, tried client. Nothing.
Neither of our computers were authenticating, so first I flushed dns cache on both, to no avail. I then unplugged my router and modem, waited 1 minute, plugged my modem back in until it finished its bootup, then plugged the router back in. Now I can login.
In my case, the issue was I could only connect using my e-mail address as a "name", no matter if the web site and the launcher says we should use the account name.
I had tried all the tricks and I used the recovery systems that allowed me to confirm my e-mail, password and name were all accurate. The only thing that bypassed by blockage was logging-in only with the e-mail address.

Well, I still can't get in :P. I run the launcher and nothing happens--no patching, no anything, just "Neverwinter" on my task bar (not even a program shows up). Any suggestions?

I picked one hell of a time to try and come back to the game. I'm on a brand new windows 8 machine and can't even log in to patch/download the game because of this error. The DNS was just flushed, I've tried uninstalling/reinstalling, resetting the modem and computer, everything mentioned in the thread. Nothing.
Same problem here, I quit the game earlier and saw there was some 1GB patch, left for some food, came back, now can't authenticate. Tried straight from the GameClient file, no luck there.

But hey, at least the game is "live" now.
Here's what did not fix it: Restarting my router and flushing DNS.
Worked for me. Thanks

The error was probably caused by the crash that ended my last session.
I hope this helps someone.

My second day playing... not a very good first impression >.<
edit: I did try the posted solutions, but nothing has worked still.
Tried what that link said.
Still unable to authenticate.
