Out of curiosity, is the "foundry being down" showing itself by giving an error saying "character creation failed" then going to the login screen when you first click on Foundry? I was going to dabble for the first time in the Foundry this morning and encountered that.
Probably. It has to create a temporary character for you to run tests, so it likely does that first.
Unfortunately the issue remains to be completely resolved. The engineers have a plan in place though the ETA of when it will be completed remains to be determined. They will continue crunching away and working to resolve the issue throughout the weekend. If an ETA is discovered, we will post it as soon as it becomes available. Thanks for your patience!
Being that I find the dungeons to be a chore, the PvP to be a who dies first fest....and PvE content is so lacking....foundry creation is all I had ._.
Yes, the foundry is down.
Yes, this is an inconvenience.
Yes, I want them to fix it faster.
No...I don't expect them to be able to troubleshoot an unknown issue in a massive system like the Foundry in a couple hours.
Half the people on this forum are sitting here ranting and raging about how PW is incompetent, and this is a massive blunder, and that all they are doing is hurting themselves because they are taking away the ability of players to make them free content.
It is a big blunder, but everything else you said is quite true.
The whingers need an attitude adjustment.
Here's an example of the kind of time they're dealing with... Yes, I'm pulling these numbers out of my rear, but they are reasonable (based on my experience as a programmer for many years).
1 hour - Find the issue. This is mostly done... we can't login to foundry. Reproduce it on private dev server.
1-3 hours - More finding the issue: Why can't we login? Dig through log files on a private server.
1-8 hours - Isolate the issue in code. This can take a VERY long time if someone new on that section of code is the only one available on a friday night. Coding problem? DB server issue? Several people can be working on this at once, fortunately.
1 hour - Figure out the fix. This is usually simple... "It's failing in this routine here because of this pointer"
1-24+ hours - Implement the fix. If it's very small, it'll be very fast. If it's a major issue like the new illusionary stuff is causing the db server to crash, then it might take much longer and might require art department, etc.
4-24+ hours - Test it. Imagine a fix that ended up breaking quests... It has to be thoroughly tested before being pushed out. The testing time would depend on the fix that had to be implemented. If it required a lot of database mucking, testing alone could take even longer than 24 hours.
All told, we're looking at a minimum of 1 workday to ~3+ full days (not workdays, DAYS -- 3 shifts) of employee time. And this can't be split up by throwing more people at it, either... you can't throw 80 people at it and have it done in 1 hour any easier than 9 women can have a baby in a month. I'm assuming some parallelism with the devs.
This is a great time for foundry authors to go try out new ones! Learn new tricks, see how others are doing stuff, etc.
I will rate that one high . . . when we get to play it

You know if I was a Admin I would at least tell people the plan that we had instead of just giving a vague response telling us that the problem hasn't been fixed. We know that it's still down that's why were still on the forum complaining.

It would be under copyright, but I'm pretty sure a FQ would be sufficiently transformative as long as you didn't use lines verbatim. It would be unlikely to even register on the meter. Since it would need to be short enough to be playable, not to mention entertaining enough, the end would only vaguely resemble the book.
Kind of like my FQ which is loosely based on Holy Grail, which is based on an old legend.

I will quote Jurassic park! I used to be in computer programing, so cut them some slack. Has anyone seen Jurassic Park? I will quote Jurassic park!!!!
RAY ARNOLD's cigarette is practically burning his lips, down to
almost nothing in his mouth. He hovers over NEDRY's computer terminal,
which is a mass of incomprehensible commands that scroll by quickly as
he futilely examines each one of them.
MULDOON paces. ELLIE stares at Arnold in amazement.
ELLIE
Are we getting anywhere with these procedures of yours?
I mean, what's hanging us up?
ARNOLD
I ran a key check on every stroke Nedry entered today.
It's all pretty standard stuff, until this one - -
ELLIE
(stands, joins the group at the computer)
What one?
He points to his computer screen, to a specific series of
commands. The others crowed over his shoulder and stare at the screen.
ARNOLD (cont'd)
"Keycheck /space -o keycheck off safety -o." He's
turning the safety systems off. He doesn't want
anybody to see what he's about to do. Now look at this
next entry, it's the kicker. "Wht.rbt.obj." Whatever
it did, it did it all. But with Keycheck off, the
computer didn't file the keystrokes. Only way to find
them now is to search the computer's lines of code one
by one.
ELLIE
How many lines of code are there?
ARNOLD
Uh - - about two million.
ELLIE
Two million - - great. That would help.
(or)
Oh good, that'll take no time.

First of all...PW is a big company that is making tons of money elsewhere and from other Neverwinter players...if you honestly think that you being pissed matters to them in any way, or that the foundry being the only reason you come to play matters to them, then you think to much of yourself. Second, if any of you think that your Foundry content is good enough to bring any sort of change to the game, then you overestimate your abilities as an author of user-made content. And no...they don't give you the Foundry so they can have "the privilege of you making them content for free", they give it to you so you have something to do after end-game and so they don't have to bust out a HAMSTER ton of expansions. The foundry is for YOU...not for the developers, and they don't give a **** if you're pissed that it's out.
Third...Neverwinter is a FREE TO PLAY MMORPG. You don't have to pay for it...you don't have to do anything other than put it on your computer...you don't get to whine about an inconvenience. And quite frankly...you really think constant whining is going to make the developers work faster?
The foundry will be back up when it's up...deal with it. If you don't like that, then go play something else.
As for the developers, I apologize for my fellow consumers' complaining about a service you are giving to us for free being down...I hope you guys are able to fix it soon.
Perfect World doesn't spend money for funnsies. If the foundry didn't make money, it'd be gone.
Perfect World doesn't spend money for funnsies. If the foundry didn't make money, it'd be gone.
But your missing one key thing here. The Foundry does not make them money, and that is why the Foundry has been pushed off to the back of the class since Beta. It gets maybe 1/10th of the attention it needs to be a main feature. Some of the bug this latest patch fixed are major issues that have been in since March or earlier, and there are still a lot more that the patch notes don't even mention.
In short, PWE is giving the giant middle finger to everyone hoping the Foundry would be a main stream feature, because it is not monetized. They will release an update to the main game every two days it seems to fix on single issue that affects a minority of the players, but it has taken them months to get the audio working in Foundry quests, which affects EVERYONE that plays a Foundry quest, as well as the authors making them.
I think the only reason the Foundry is even in the game is because Cryptic already put so much work into the system before PWE bought them and they figured it was one more tag line they could throw in their advertisements, but their blatant lack of giving a **** about the Foundry shows that they don't care enough about it past having the ability to say "we have it others don't"
I am not blaming the developers, I am blaming PWE. I have read tons of those websites that employees and ex-employees put how their job was at a company, and one thing is common with PWE, and something that shows in their games, they ARE incompetent when it comes to managing. Cryptic deves might be the best in the world, but PWE is C-blocking them from doing good work because they rather them focus on money making features instead of making the game better first or in the case of the Foundry, making a feature that has been touted for years as one of THE MAIN FEATURES of the game, yet it it gets the least amount of attention from devs. Again, not the devs faults, but PWE who is telling them at the big meetings where they need to focus.
I would not be surprised if their monthly agenda calender has like, 4 hours a month set aside for one person to work on the Foundry.
I bet if the Foundry was vastly improved, but then PWE puts in "Premium Features" that you have to buy to use, the game would lose a lot of Foundry authors...
*sings* "I like Gammera! He's so neat!!! He is full of turtle meat!!!"
"Hah! You are doomed! You're only armed with that pathetic excuse for a musical instrument!!!" *the Savage Beast moments before Lonnehart the Bard used music to soothe him... then beat him to death with his Fat Lute*
Which basically means "ha, they be stupid enough to think we are actually going to work on this over a weekend".
As an aside, I'm just going to point out a simple example that demonstrates everything you need to know about how and why PW/Cryptic work on code.
Ever since day 1 of Open Beta I have been coming here to read about the game, no matter how many times I click the "Stay Signed In" button it doesn't keep me signed in; no matter how many times I have asked my browser to remember my PW the login code doesn't seem to be able to pick that up, I have to manually login every single time; which may be as many as 10 times a day if I'm working on a Foundry project or trading reviews.
But the one time I accidentally clicked "Charge Zen" instead of "Login" I was instantly logged in, no need to enter my login or password, the code worked.
And that, my fellow Foundry outcasts is about as honest example of the prioritising of coding in this game you will ever see.
They don't care what doesn't work as long as "Charge Zen" does work.
Guys, you simply don't get it. They 'shut down' the foundry during the double drop weekend event in order to avoid any possible exploits within their system. It's a fall-safe way to do things during an event because they aren't confident enough with their own system *the foundry.* Believe me, there are ways to exploit things like this and in order to avoid any such catastrophe, especially near launch going live, it's best to just simply avoid it - and that is when people are spending much more time beyond any measures in order to farm to make money in the game. I can assure you that when this event is over, they will have found this 'so-called problem, of which they won't explain any further to us,* and things will be fine thereafter. Understand that they are still in business to make money, and if anyone finds any way to exploit their system near a live launch where the increase of their population has increased more than likely exponentially, then that will be extremely detrimental to their business plan.
So accept it, move on, and just wait till this event is over. It's clear that they just aren't confident with their own software to propagate an event with a system that may interfere with their funding. If it was anything else, they'd of explained a bit more than then what they have regarding the issues they are experiencing.
La te da - sorry, been working in the development department for major gaming companies far too long to think otherwise when I clearly understand what is happening.
And if they have gotten whiff of this statement prior to the end of the event, they will either a) magically have a solution on the last day the event has taken place, b) removed this post from within the thread, or c) wait till Tuesday so you all think otherwise.
Give or take, developers of games aren't stupid. Especially those who are part of a network development as well.
Cool story there man. I suppose the lunar landing was filmed on a Hollywood Back lot and there is a natural barrier that keeps our ships from falling off the edge of the planet. Come on, you guys and your "Oh their out to screw you" theories make my *** itch.

I've been taking my level 20 cleric to Blacklake and playing guardian angel by free healing people after combat. I'm above level enough nashers don't attack me, so I can stand right in the middle of combat or close by, and if they do attack for some reason my companion easily kills them. It's fun, people thank me.
