I am worried about this game because it is going to be F2P. And Cryptic doesn't really have a clean track record. I played CO, hoping it would be the superhero MMO I always wanted. Then I played it and realized how much HAMSTER it really was. I am wondering though, is this going to instanced or open world?

I share your hesitation given Cryptic and PWE's track record on various aspects of game design and management.
It will be largely open world with select instanced dungeons called dungeon delves. These are typically the end of a zone's story arc, with a boss.
I plan mostly the same thing, with limited forays to game to say hi to friends. However, cryptic has data showing that people like us are rare and the total people who make content are less than 1% with 0.5% producing "good content" (read that as maps which are not just for exploits or quick completion).
Hence they are willing put out a red carpet so creators can produce maps and that percentage increases to something around 5%(they hope) instead of such a low number.
p.s. you guessed it. Numbers are for realms of imagination. However, I believe they are quite close to real numbers.
Not sure if Cryptic ran their numbers with the old Bioware NWN site in mind. In the hayday of NWN there were so many mods for that game it was almost mind boggling. The old bioware community was huge, over 4 million players registered on those forums.

While the number may be true it is small when comparing numbers in WoW. In fact, had the number been meaningful we wouldn't have lost support, what, years before the rug was pulled out from under our feet?

WoW is like Sauron: Only one becomes that powerful until it is often toppled. D&D will have its followers without having to throw hundreds of millions at it *cough cough SW:TOR cough cough*

Ugh, don't bring up TOR... I wanted nothing more than for that game to be the next mmo I'd play for 4 years like I did with WoW...
Now I'm back to waiting and hoping the next mmo will be great only to be disappointed.
I'm hesitant to be hopeful- on one hand I enjoyed DDO for the most part minus a couple really annoying things (insane amount of min/maxing, no rewards for dungeons you might spend 2 hours in only to fail on the boss, overly complicated loot/crafting/flagging systems, lack of immersion outside of the dungeons), and D&D has been my favourite IP since I was old enough to read, my first novel was Dragons of Autumn Twilight when I was 6.
I just dunno what to think of PWE. I don't really care about STO apparantly sucking- I never cared for Star Trek anyway. Champions also wasn't my thing- and I didn't think Perfect World itself was too bad (too grindy, but otherwise seemed ok to me). PWE can make some immersive games, some large games, some pretty/customizable games, some popular games, and some smooth running games- they've also made flukes and some brutal grinds.
I've always considered D&D to be more about the adventure than the loot.

Well, Cryptic will make it, PWE just distributes it. Now a certain A company isn't publishing, we'll see....
Yes, as said pwe will only snipe your purse and everything related to game has the say from cryptic.
PWE can decide on a few things in development- basically its release (by saying they have no funds to release the game so release it now or never) but rest everything is a suggestion to cryptic and they can't decide on development.

Cryptic worries me even more- as there's not a single Cryptic game I've enjoyed.
I'll just hope it isn't anything like previous titles.

The devs at cryptic are all very knowledgeable in the ways of D&D being pnp players themselves. I trust them!
Unfortunately the methods with which PWE decides to "snipe your purse" can have a pretty adverse affect on the game.
