  • For the last week I've been getting constant Rubber Banding in game. I have high speed cable internet, a good gaming PC (3.8 GHz, 16 gig ram + 4 gig ram on video card, windows 8.1), and didn't have any lag issues until recently.

    Help?

Rubberbanding often is a symptom of problems with your Internet connection.

Note that your cable Internet only is the first hop in the Internet connection between you and Cryptic, and that connection can easily consist of 15-20 hops. If there is a problem on any of those hops, your local connection speed does not matter. People really too often order high-speed Internet local connection without checking if the ISP got backbone speeds to back up that high-speed local connection. As soon as you get out of your local connection you will be on shared lines.

Check your connection with ping and traceroute(tracert) to launcher.playneverwinter.com

I am having the same problem. I've had it for two days now. Do you have Comcast by any chance @rabidphilosopher?

Did you note that I mentioned that this was a problem which surfaced only recently? My connection hasn't changed (just checked: 30 ping, 53 mps download and 12 mps upload). But my gameplay has.

    Yes. East Coast. North East.
  • I also traced my route. There are 15 hops, no missing lines ... although I don't know what I'm looking at to be honest. I don't know why, for example, my first "hop" has a lower ping than later hops down the list.

At any point does it go through Cogentco?

    There's your problem. Right there.

I use Century Link and I have also been experiencing the rubber band effect the past week so it is not a Comcast specific issue.

The Internet changes all the time. Links go down, links get congested, fiber cables break, routing changes, routers crash etc etc.

So sudden changes in connectivity quality can happen.

The main thing to look for is packet loss. On tracroute that means you get a * rather than a number. Persistent packet loss is bad and a symptom of a congested link.

It is natural and expected that your ping increases as you go deeper into the net, all these hops are stacked behind each other. You should ideally stay below 200ms for last hop, but games might be playable at higher pings as long as there is no packet loss.

I always check against patchserver.crypticstudios.com and now I am wondering which server would be the best to check the pings. (Writing this I am also wondering if telling the game server address will open the door for DDOS attacks, so I could understand if no official answer is given or the correct one is erased. ;-) )

Only your local connection has not changed. Youz have no (direct) means to influence the route that your data packages take through the internet. So while your local connection might not have changed, the routing might have.

There have been situations where the lag was massive and rubberbanding was widespread and affected most players.

One time was during the DDos attacks (what 2 years ago?), when everyone was suffering for a while.

Also, sometimes new content has suffered from this problem - when Stronghold marauders were first introduced they were in effect unplayable due to lag and rubberbanding.

Today, however, no - there is simply not a server-wide lag issue. Anyone suffering from lag really has just his/her connection to blame.
    Hoping for improvements...
  • The issue was a router that needed to be reset.

Your not alone, I've been having terrible rubber banding and lag the past few days. My internet is flaky at the best of times so I didn't think much about it...

I checked the two different addresses you guys shared, and my pings are under 70 ms all the way up to the perfectworld servers, where it jumps to over 800 ms. What's that mean?
  • mentinmindmakermentinmindmaker Member Posts: 1,492 Arc User
800 ms means you'll have a very bad game experience :) Verify it by using ping, a high delay on one traceroute can be a random incident. And while you are pinging, look for lost packets. Packet loss will give bad game quality to a greater degree than high ping.

Since the big ping jump is close to game servers it sounds like the connection between Cryptic and one of the highlevel ISPs is congested. If you share the trace it will be easier to comment.

Since laggy game is not a general problem, it is not the servers or *all* links to Cryptic that has issues.

it's just showing how bad the lag is. (i think) I know yesterday in codg (xbox) the farming was nearly impossible lag was so bad. even good groups who don't normally have a problem were getting thrown off the platform at times. so it's not just the pc side. I suspect that everyone and their uncle was logging on for the event and it was overloading the servers.

Same here. Just now it took several minutes for Ebon Downs to load, and before that I had unbelievable rubberbanding in the protector's speech map. I'm just outside Philly.

    @harbtanzer

traceroute shows how many hops it takes to get to any internet location and the inherent delay. its a roadmap with a traffic report for all intensive purposes.

ping just sends a packet to a location and expects a response.

in windows you open a command prompt window from the start menu and type:
    tracert launcher.playneverwinter.com
    hit enter and watch

    when its done try:
    ping launcher.playneverwinter.com

my traceroute is showing issues out in the net. lines 4 and 5 "timed out" so there is a non insignificant problem somewhere.

Pretty bad right now. Traceroute is showing the latency and ping drops seem to be starting when hitting Internap, who are apparently a datacenter colo provider that I assume Perfect World/Cryptic are hosting via.
