Because, according to the Gateway, that's when the Black Ice Refining "Event" ends, and we can no longer use Black Ice Crafting.
I assume that it has something to do with Global Warming.
Is it all the new Dragons?
Are Dragon Emissions a Greenhouse Gas?
Should we stop Slaying them and start outfitting them with Catalytic Converters?
'Wen considered the nature of time and understood that the universe is, instant by instant, recreated anew. Therefore, he understood, there is in truth no past, only a memory of the past. Blink your eyes, and the world you see next did not exist when you closed them. Therefore, he said, the only appropriate state of the mind is surprise. The only appropriate state of the heart is joy. The sky you see now, you have never seen before. The perfect moment is now. Be glad of it.' Terry Pratchet The Thief Of Time

Well, that year is when our transmission sent back in 1999 will reach star HD 178428. That's also the year Mercury will align with Neptune from our perspective in space. That's also the year I'll celebrate my 89th Earth-standard birthday, hopefully on the Moon or maybe even Mars!
In the year 2060, the Lag Monster is finally defeated by the combined might of all the world's military. The world enjoys 7 years of lag free webbing. In the 2067, hidden in a secret cave, a few hundred Lag Monster eggs hatch. The youngins quickly mature and devour the entire internet.
