My all time favorite MMO name was from the first MMO I played - Asheron's call. Whenever you died in game you were teleported to the whatever lifestone you were bound to. Often lifestones were located in towns or other populated locations. When ever you materialized at the lifestone there was a zone message that announced your arrival and how it was you died. For example: "Tusker Guard beats [insert character name] so hard, their ancestors feel it!" "Virindi Inquisitor pummels [character name] into submission"
With this in mind - best name ever "His Meat"...
Stupid, juvenile, silly - at best should have only been funny the first time you saw it - but there weren't too many times on the Thistledown server that you didn't see this player's death message scroll by.

Sorry for my rant, but, touchy subject lol... it really ruins my immersion almost to see some peoples names.
Somewhere in the options menu is the ability to turn off player name display altogether (or display friends/guild only). Perhaps you'd enjoy it more that way.
If you think about it, automatically knowing the name of everyone around you without ever having interacted with them should be pretty immersion-breaking too.
We just play the Neverwinter drinking game, though occasional debates break out like whether we should include Leonidases.

I like that system, makes death have a shame component.
The only time you should get the unable to name thing is if the name you are trying to use some how breaks some part of the naming policy.
Some profane names I have reported players using in game, omgosh. There has be some kind of a profanity filter on names, I wish it screened the names better, and got the unable to name message. Its a shame when a player chooses a name just to offend, especially with children in the game. Very sad.
I have to laugh tonight at zone chat in PE. The bots are going *crazy*, posting new every 5 seconds or so. One just keeps counting up with the same @ name plus #. Saw it go from 25 to 120 in under an hour. Amazing. Reported and waiting to see how long Cryptic takes.

Yea. Im not in favor of too much name screening, I value the freedom of the player more than seeing a possibly offensive name now and then. But certain names you don't pick. I've ran into several <Bad Person> and other WWII "heroes".. Some names should just not be used.
