Thought I would post this here to see if anyone else had same issues. I started playing Neverwinter because my girlfriend is a gammer. She plays so many on-line games that I don’t even try to keep track. She got me interested in Neverwinter and for a couple months we played as a team. Then she got bored with the game and started playing a different one.
The problem that I have is that she pays to equip her toons with the best gear possible. She has all rank 10s, perfect weapon and armor enchants, multiple legendary artifacts, at least 5 max level companions, and multiple epic mounts. Her personal bank on 3 toons rivals most guild banks. Her lowest GS toon is 17k. She gets on Neverwinter she buys and sells some items but never plays content. Before this game I never played on line games, so I don’t know if this behavior is the norm.

Definitely not the norm for most players and gamers.
It's not really abnormal. The game has a cash shop and f2p model. If she's not highly competetive or particularly fond of D&D I think most people would say what she's doing is all there really is beside content updates and possible level cap increasing.
I could understand spending money to gear up a toon and make that toon the best if she did PVE or PVP but she doesn’t. She never leaves PE. I could see buying new mounts if she used them to travel anywhere other than PE but she doesn’t leave PE. She spends hundreds of dollars a month on a game that she visits less than 10 hours a month. Spending that much money on a game you don’t play doesn’t make sense to me. Her explanation for why she doesn’t play is that NW doesn’t have any content that out performs the content of other games and until it does it isn’t worth playing. Her reason for gearing up her toons is that she believes that NW has a talented team and the potential to be a great game and she wants to be ready when that happens.

If she had actually played the dungeons where the gear drops, farmed her own enchants, etc...., she'd have had content to play and a reason to leave PE. Because she bought all that stuff, she does indeed have nothing to do (and she's still disadvantaged because she hasn't earned any campaign boons or obtained any practical combat/group experience to speak of).
Spending a ton of money on something you're not currently using because you insist that you might someday (game or something else), would seem to indicate something akin to a shopping addiction issue, and I think you have legitimate reasons to express your concerns over this to your girlfriend.
there are people that like to spend money frivolously. they might like high fashion or status or high life or a combination of all these things and more.
in an MMO environment, it might be part of ones immersion to do the same thing. there are many different aspects of the game that might appeal to some and not to others. it's more normal (and quite healthy) for you and your girlfriend to have different play styles. i think it's a much better world because there is diversity in it. but of course, you should have some things in common with people that you interact with. and it's okay if you both aren't into the exact same things.
She's probably a breed of "completionist". So much so that the idea of a point for what she does is not important. All that is important is finishing, by having the best gear, all collections etc.
If money is no issue for her and she still has money for the important things, then it shouldn't bother you.
From a personal point of view, I don't think this is normal behaviour. I think it's borderline addiction to spending.

I have sort of the same issue, though perhaps not so extreme. I have a bit of a hoarding issue when it comes to video games, combined with a bit of a shopping issue. I have to stop playing every now and then in order to save up AD though because my hubby cut me off from buying Zen after a while. So usually a couple weeks before a mod, I will only log in to invoke and do leadership on all 10 of my characters, and then log off before I can spend any AD.

gamer and rich, what do you want more ? ;p
she probably played a lot before you came in.
she`s right about the content, there`s no real challenge at the end.
not even while geared with r7.
As others have mentioned, it's not normal but I don't think it's anything to be worried about. If she wants to spend money on the game, so be it. No sweat.
Never had a gamer chic gf but I think they tend to spend in game and less irl no? how many pairs of shoes, purses, dresses, earrings, necklaces, lotions, make up, exfoliating creams, etc does she have irl? My non-gamer gf has tons she has her own closet and bathroom cabinets. But she never plays video games, ever.
