About module 3: the curse of icewind dale

I found this reading news on a french video game website today. Since there's no official thread about it yet, I'm making one here.

Link to the video.

So far, what we can see is one new dwarf themed dungeon instance, one or two overworld solo grind maps (sigh), and we learn that everyone wants black ice for some reason. Since we're probably done with Valindra for now, we may get new enemies, and stuff like that.

While the new dungeon definitely catched my attention - it seems to involve a (big?) outside zone like Malabog's castle -, the perspective of more solo grind doesn't appeal me at all. That's only a supposition but I don't see how they could make a dungeon with a village and fishing boats. So, meh, more of the same stuff, probably a lot of useless small solo instances and few group content, as usual. :/

    More solo grind :(

I might not bother with that (yet) again - it isn't as if the ones we have already aren't tedious enough alrready.....

I'm pretty excited to see the inclusion of Icewind Dale, it shows that devs are listening to a lot of our request, group or solo I will more than likely enjoy the content because I have so far...I do hope they add more tiles and items for the toolset as well.

During the Winter Fest....some of the locals in that small snowy town were talking about an underground village........maybe there's a connection to ID. :)

Nah, they were just talking about The Secret Faun Level.

You DID find The Secret Faun Level right?

yep the Secret Faun Level where you were able to get a Faun for free without any form of the currency. That was how I got mine.

I played the Old single/multiplayer Icewind Dale game and it was a nice lore rich area so just imagine what they can do with it now.

Fury of the Feywild has a great palette and memorable landscape enemies with fun abilities.

Shadowmantle is better structured, but drab, and the only interesting landscape enemies are the red wizards.

I'm optimistic that module 3 will have a varied palette, good structure, and novel enemy abilities.

They can truly do an incredible amount with this module for sure I am hoping that they really get a feel of IWD by going back to the Crytstal Shard trilogy as well as Black Isle Icewind Dale game, if they capture that spirit it will be the best module yet.

I'm sure it'll be fun for me, regardless.

I'm likely one of the oddballs in this game. I like fantasy video games, and play this, WoW, and Rift as the mood strikes me. But I've never cared for fantasy novels or RPGs.

For novels, I'd read the original Dragonlance trilogy and a couple Ravenloft novels. Outside of the D&D franchise, I've read maybe 5 fantasy novels my whole life (I am 41).

Now, I've been a tabletop gamer for over 25 years, and I make part of my living writing, designing, and publishing them (including through our creator-owned imprint), and I"ve played D&D maybe seven times in all those years, and it was always Ravenloft. Sure, I know the mechanics for 1e/2e, and even the d20 OGL (a natural requirement in the industry), but I am one of those role-players that just never gravitated toward D&D fantasy.

So, whatever they do with the lore, whatever they include, it'll all be new to me.

I assume you realize that the crystal shard series IS D&D franchise right? And pretty iconic at that.

Even if it does follow the same pattern as the previous two modules, I will still enjoy it. The Icewind Dale setting is great for an entirely new story line with any number of new monsters that can be introduced. I do think think though that whatever boons they have for module 3 something other than just more percentage increases for our gear/enchant stats. I also do hope that they include the events surrounding the Sundering in this module, as the Icewind Dale region is the locale for a number of "adventures" relating to that.

Its weird, IWD was probably a lot more successful than expected, without having the overall quality of the other black isle staples baldur's saga and torment (planescape torment is arguably the best roleplaying game ever, undeniably the best characters, the best history and more free to be evil, neutral and good than any other game... but was a comercial failure) but was easier and more "epic" and a lot of people enjoyed it because it was more friendly to non "D&D" fanatics, there was less reading and more kill giants, so was totally worth the money.

Having said that, i will enjoy that module more than any of the previous ones, i love dwarfs, i love mountains and cold, i loved IWD and IWD2 what can i say... im happy with this video, thanks!

I'm anxious for some new stuff to try. I hope the devs mix things up, so we're not just fighting ice trolls, ice goblins, wolves, and rimefire golems, like we did on Icespire Peak. As another poster mentioned - if the devs implement it so that the landscapes are varied and have some color to them, (other than dull browns, greys, and white), I'd be very happy.

I don't honestly think so. There is no word about any new class yet. And its not been mentioned in any of the teasers.

Also, I'm still firmly of the belief that. Ranger slipped past its due date, putting the Dev team one class behind. We should of got Ranger with Sharandar. It simply was tailor fit for the theme. That means we should of got Warlock with Dread Ring. It also would of fit the theme. Had that happened, Druid for Icewind Dale would of fit perfectly. Instead we are off one, putting Warlock in Icewind. Assuming that didn't slip behind and end up pushed to the next module.

    That makes total sense actually.

But what we really need are more healer and tank classes for the dungeon crawls. I think we have a buttload of DPS at present.

I don't think that will happen as you desire sad to say. The Hunter Ranger class was released alongside module 2, not Sharandar (with all the Hunter ranger NPCs).

Also, the next class will be Warlock as the developers have already been working on it since alpha.

It was the other datamined class along with Hunter Ranger....and what do you know, Hunter Ranger was the first class to be released post-launch.

Has Valindra really been dealt with? At the end of VT, they show her phylactery. The Zulkir of Illusion uses his as a revolving door, surely Valindra can do the same.

Yes, liches can always return unless their phylactery is destroyed. Valindra is pretty much definitely going to make another appearance in the future unless there is a way to destroy the phylactery I don't know about. Maybe not module 3, but they would not specifically show her phylactery in an unreachable area if they didn't plan to reuse her. Though I do feel insulted whenever I complete a dungeon that involves destroying a powerful lich, but my character who is supposed to be the Hero of Neverwinter does not even think to look for a phylactery.

Back on topic, I am looking forward to this update. I don't really know a lot of D&D lore, but from what I have learned, Icewind Dale sounds like a fun setting for a new update. Bonus points if we get some nice foundry stuff with module 3 as well.
Neverwinter players are stubborn things....until you strip them down to bone. (Cursed players, my flowers, MINE!) Oh how I plotted their demise.

Love the Icewind stuff. included a big module in my foundry campaign set in the Ice Wind Dales area.

    Hope it includes three things.
    1. Paladins
    2. Raid option Boss
    3. Reason for player base to play some of the quality foundry events.

As much as some of this might be welcome to see. I honestly think you are setting yourself up for disappointment. Rule number 1 for ANY MMO is to not expect anything delivered that has not already been expressly commented on by the Dev staff.

None of this has even been hinted at, rumored or otherwise. There is simply no reason to expect them to suddenly surprise us with any of this.

Perhaps one day, we might see this list fulfilled. But it's most certainly not going to happen for module 3.

I am hoping the add the playable race of Duegar or Lizardfolk next. Module 1 added moon elf, module 2 added HR class. Now I think module 3 would be a race and module 4 another class.

It was mentioned somewhere that a new D&D Campaign about Dragons was starting and that it spans multiple platforms[so maybe games too]. Icewind Dale is one of the locations in that Campaign.

Yeah its good to have contempt for your player base. *eye roll*

Paladin is the iconic name, and it would be foolish to name it anything else. I have confidence that the devs have the good business sense to name their hard work properly, when and if paladin is developed.
