Being a veteran is not about politics.

It's not about which political party is right, or even why we're over there.

It's about being willing to fight for the right thing, and being willing to fight for the freedom of your people.

It's about being willing to be the guy that steps up when no one else does, being the person that does the job so no one else has to.

Most of all, when it really comes down to it, it's about the guys to your left and right through it all.

Honoring those that served is not, and should never be about the politics surrounding wars they fought in. It's honoring them because they served. They stood up to be counted.

Veteran's day is not just about those that served in the most recent conflicts, it's about all veterans.

Quoting this to bring up another point: It is also not about what flag you wore on your uniform, or in which country you were born or reside, but that you served or honor those who served. Therefore, please leave political/nationalistic comments out of the thread. Thank you.

As a veteran of the United States Navy i am very happy to see this event. I also like the fact it is Veterans day in America but you seem to point it to ALL Veterans of the military around the world thank you. Everyone that is makeing a political statment need to shut up. unless you have served in any military you have no idea what it is like and what it requires of us.

. . . . . My father is a U.S. Veteran, Army-Air and my sister served in the Army as well as a Paratrooper. Two of my grandfather's also served as well as many others of my family, past and present. If I had been a healthy individual, I'd probably be serving right now myself. I shall try to attend but as always, I cannot hold firm to any schedule. Thanks to all the Veterans and Friends and Family of Veterans for all you do, have done, gone through, and will do. Safe travels!

. . . . . Indeed, while this event falls with the U.S. recognition of Veterans, I myself have always included all Veterans, world-wide, in my honoring of them for upholding peace and protecting the World from those that would do any of us harm. My family dates back to a long line of Defenders of the Realm, the Knight family of olde' that once protected the Kings and Queens of the British Isles and beyond. I'm even related to the current Spencer family from Wales, though distantly.

We have a whole bunch of current and former soldiers in my clan. They don't all play this game, but some do, and I'll let them know about this.

I have a cousin currently serving in the US marines, and my aunt was in the Canadian army in her younger days.
Warrior Nation. Always recruiting. Check us out.

Did my usual mandatory military service here in Austria several years ago (pretty much like a pathfinder's camp, but with guns and booze). One guy from our 2nd company died during that time in a car accident, the wreckage of his car was left near the roadside for days since it was difficult to recover and we saw it every day when we drove to the base. My young and cocky 19 yr old self suddenly felt a lot less immortal than before. Not really from a soldier family, but here are some small bits about WWII I was told by my relatives.

Grandfather (father's side) - served in Russia, wounded 3 times and had a weird bump at the back of his head where a shrapnel almost got him, as a young boy I found this to be the coolest thing ever. Died while I was still small, so I never got a chance to really ask him about the war.

Grandfather (mother's side): didn't have to serve since he was a construction engineer and needed at home. Almost got murdered by the HAMSTER because of his Czech last name (despite Czech names being really common here in Vienna). Survived but died of diabetes before I was born.

Granduncle: wounded in 45 and died when the hospital he was recovering in was bombed. Didn't make it to the air raid shelter cause of his wounds. My grandmother told me that story when I was older.

A close relative from Germany: was drafted into the Hitler's Youth in late 44, but was lucky to be with the artillery at the rear echelons. Told me that he spent most of his time running away. Survived the war and is now approaching his 90ies, still going strong, but does not like talking about the war.

Oh yes. This is open to anyone, anywhere, that has an interest in showing appreciation for all soldiers, and that believe in freedom, human rights and personal dignity.

As for the political grandstanding/hatespeak of a few I've sadly had to moderate, its ok, I'm an old hat at this. We WILL be there this Monday,

Tell me I cant gather... and I'll be there. Tell my friends they cant gather, and I'll bring the world. This one's for the Vets and their families, you know who you are...

While i support this event, what you said is not at all accurate. You say its not about a political party or why were are over there, then go on to say that its about "fighting for the right thing". If we do not asses WHY we are there in the 1st place we cannot go on and say we are there and are "right". So i reiterate i approve whole heartily with this even, but if you want politics to stay out of it you cannot say things like "we are there fighting for what is right" because that statement in itself is somewhat political. Anyways great job with the event but politics gotta stay out of it on both sides, not just the nay-sayers.

Hey Aandre, you know I'll be there, most likely the7:00PM one, as there are a slew of local ceremonies happening here locally, atleast one of them I will be attending. As for international celebration, keepin mind that this day is also called Armistice Day, an international day ofremembrance of the fallen war dead. Anyone else remembering to wear theirpoppies?

    Hello again guys.

Seeing some of you comment that I among others showed hostility towards this I would like to step in with an update.

A vastly important point one of you made is that this event is to recognize military service INTERNATIONALLY and in an exclusively depoliticized manner, of which I wasn't aware coming from Aandre's initial post. I was lead to believe that the goal of this was for the international community to pay respect to America and her allies.

As this has now been clarified, I will gladly join you on your event, being from a family with generations of proud military tradition.

I would also like to ask Aandre to update the OP with information about distinguished war heroes from other countries, which would surely benefit the informational awareness of the community and broaden the the pool of potential attendees of the event.

As an example I would very much like to acquaint you with a story which is very similar to that of the captain from the OP, but, sadly, with a tragic outcome. Here you go.

Yes, but naturally since this is an American holiday, this will be a central theme in the event. However, you will realize that those in attendance will welcome all to join, as its not any one nation or political party we are focusing on, but the human element of being a soldier, and the sacrifice involved for the soldier and his/her family.

So stand there close your eyes, and imagine your nation's heroes, your flag, and those that put their lives on the line... for the true goal of this event is to bond together as brothers and sisters of peace and dignity, REGARDLESS of political or national origins.

Very good point, we will be stressing the importance of our international friends, including of course those that call their veterans day Armistice Day where they are from.

And don't think I forgot about the poppies... one video all will remember for a long time in fact have quite a few poppies in it.

This event should honor all people worldwide who served the human community (as well local and global) in times of need and poverty without holding a weapon.
For people who didnt fight over territory, no, for people who shared this territory and worked on a plan to live together in peace.

You make a valid piont; however this event is to honor those who did serve in the defense of freedom everywhere. It is a Veteran's Day/Armistice Day Event. I'm sure if you wanted to organize an event to honor all people who served the human community, say perhaps on Earth Day, people would be more than happy to attend. I would attend such an event, just as I am planning on attending this one.

How is praising american army with the context of Neverwinter? If I put a topic to celebrate totally opposite of the American so called "freedom fighting" I bet it gets removed instantly.

Defense of freedom is quite to hear if we see how that "defence" is made of...

Well put, MANY of which are long time D&D players and current Neverwinter players. There's a huge military contingent, active and retired, that plays Neverwinter, and those who are thankful for them.

    This is for them.

MANY that play Neverwinter are veterans, from many nations. If you would like to honor those in your country, assuming you aren't from the US, have at, just follow the RoC. As long as you keep politics out, have at, more power to ya. Our ceremony may very well have that covered however. If this is no interest to you, that's quite alright. Its a voluntary player sponsored event for those who wish to participate. Nothing more.

I know I have played D&D and Online RPGs, including Neverwinter, with Soldiers and former Soldiers from dozens of countries.

The American Holiday of Veteran's Day, as you stated, is the same date as the International Holiday "Armistice Day" which was originally to remember those who fought and often died in World War One. It has become a remembrance day in most countries for all who have fought for their countries, and in many cases, for the good of other countries in the world.

Let's reinforce that it is a Armistice Day/Veteran's Day celebration, for all who have served, and for those who also wish to honor those who have served.
