I never understand how many people type in a rogues forum, (where they clearly can see the word rogue)
the word rouge.

I bet their faces are red!

Joke aside, it is one thats always baffled me.

Rouge = any red cosmetic make ups.
Rogue = Scamp, scoundrel, burglar, bandit, thief.

Just thought I'd mention it, where I am sure its been mentioned 1000 times.

I get a bit annoyed when I see someone spell rogue as "rouge" but then I figure (a) they likely won't appreciate me pointing out their error and (b) that mistake serves as a helpful tip to me to avoid that person (yes, I'm that snobbish --- spell the **** class right and you deserve my acknowledgement).

I know it's just a transposition error, sometimes... rogue - rouge... just the G swaps places with the U, simple mistake to make. But one would be amazed how offended some people get when you point out the differences between the words. So I rarely bother any more.

Now the difference between "your" and "you're", that absolutely dives me up a wall.

"There", "their" and "they're" are pretty frequently abused as well.

I feel the same way about people who don't understand the proper use of To Vs. For, Ellipses, Pluralization, when to use a Semicolon or how to use a Dash.

It's MADDENING!

Oh, excellent links, thank you! I think I may not always use dashes and ellipses correctly. On the other hand, four ellipses (or three followed by a period) is just dumb IMO, and I am purposely not going to follow that rule. Nor am I going to add spaces between periods for my ellipses (though I do tell MS to not automatically replace my three periods with that ugly, tiny ellipses character). I think I generally have pretty good grammar and punctuation, though I sometimes have issues with spelling.

And pronunciation, sometimes, too. That tends to happen when you get most of your vocabulary from reading though, if you never hear anyone pronounce something, you can tend to make up some pretty funny sounding words based on spelling. For example, I had heard people use the word "facade" before, and I knew what it meant, but seeing it in print I didn't connect the word with the pronunciation. Instead I thought facade was pronounced "fay-kade" and was just a synonym for facade, which I thought was spelled "fassad" or something. Facade doesn't translate into "fah-sahd" in my head, at all. :P

I am personally terrible when it comes to proper semicolon usage. Colons are not so bad since I do remember that FANBOYS trick but that is about it. However, I don't think I would push someone away because of how they use colons or commas. Only if they act like a fool and type as if they are texting their homeboy.

::boggle:: Yes, rouge is red, like all make ups it goes on the face. If you are so inclined, you could put it elsewhere. Make up is Multi-player :P

Rogues however are not red unless they are wearing rouge. Rogue applicaions are limited to borrowing things which does not belong to them and getting into trouble. Rogues also are Multi-player :P

I'll embarrass myself here for a moment and admit that I used to wonder why, in games, people would say "Ciao!" when they were logging off... then I found out that that is the Italian word for goodbye, pronounced "chow"... I had heard that pronunciation before, and knew the word, but I had never realized how it was properly spelled.

I dont see what teh problem is.....since more often than not, it is the same typo as teh. Once you've worked in a corporate bureaucracy and watch some guy making a few million a year not knowing how to use To, Two, Too, Hear, Here, There, Their, They're....you begin to wonder just exactly how important it was to remember those rules from english class.

I just remember the time I spent, no exaggeration, ten minutes trying to translate a friend's blog post because she started her first sentence with the wrong form of There. I no longer remember what the sentence was, or which form she used or should have used, but I remember reading and rereading and rereading it for literally ten minutes before it dawned on me that if I just changed the spelling in the first word, the whole blog entry made perfect sense.

So it does matter, and executives may get away with it, but GOOD executives take notice and don't hire that type of person.

I just wanted to chime in and say not every user on this forum (and ingame) has english as his/her's first language.
I try to use proper grammar, but i know i make mistakes as i go.
It makes it even worse when being ingame midcombat when you try to type as quickly as you can and don't have the time to check about spelling/grammar or even use a translate site to check it out.
I'm pleased many of my english co-players understand that and try to read through my mistakes (and sometimes help me out by showing the error ;-) )

But i have to agree on the use of rogue/rouge, i always have to giggle when i see people asking advice about their rouge when gaming :-)

The odd typo or "AGGHGHGHG COMBAT CANT TYPE RIGHT NOW" is one thing, but no one should be in such a rush on forums. Failing here is just pure lazy. (And I include myself in the lazy, because unless I get the red squiggly line, I aint lookin up HAMSTER.)

The only reason I typo it a lot is because I have minor dyslexia and I like to swap letters (especiall numbers) around. Then, top that off to have both words actually be real worlds, makes it even more likely to happen! Add to that that rouge is a very uncommonly used word, and well... ya know.

Bottom line, this is the internet. Typos do happen and with this particular word, it is likely to happen more often than some others. See how many posts have edits? Most of them are likely due to my dyslexic typos.

Addmitently, the proper use of two words do often get swapped around in my head on how they should be used. They are, "however" and "because." Most of the time, I fear that I use them incorrectly. Aside from all this, I am a huge fan of the English Language, Spelling, Grammar and Punctuation. It was probably one of, if not the most favorite classes that I had in school.

One thing that drives me crazy on the forums, and it is no fault of any user, is that the first line of a paragraph is not indented... This was probably the one thing I got marks for the most in school.

Perhaps we should call Rogues "Thieves" instead? That was the equivalent class name back in AD&D (2.0e)
Or shall we call them "Schurke" ("Schurken" being the plural)? (The german word for Rogue)

Well, I think that "rogue" encompasses all the different kinds of ne'er do wells that a thief would fall into. Slique, for instance, can sneak in the dark, undo traps and unlock doors, but she does not steal from people, and so "thief" would not be as suiting a moniker as "rogue".

THE classic misunderstanding! Rogues going into our pockets are either acting in self-defense, or try to save us from a horrible fate (like paid bills, vacation time, not being robbed).
