It has been said in the past that the Ranger is in the works, but probably won't make it for launch.
Also, Drizzt*

The devs have stated that they will continually add classes and races to the game post-launch. I agree that five classes does seem too low and hopefully they will add at least one more between now and launch.
Im glad this concern has been addressed sorry i didn't do my research on other forums but still its good to have a poll up see how many people have the same idea
How can you mention Drizzt sooo much and not have ranger's...
His character sheet may change from edition to edition but Drizzt started as Tempest Fighter back in Menzoberranzan and while tutored by daddy and the Academy. So the question is not "Where is the Ranger?" but "Where is the Tempest Fighter?".

Drizzt's training and development in the novels was more organic than D&D normally allows. More like a skill-based game than class-based. Also, I'm not sure I ever heard him refered to as a "Tempest" fighter in the novels (though, I read them years ago and haven't read any of the more recent stuff. Last one I read was the short story with the good aligned goblin IIRC).

The 3E sheet (haven't seen the 4E one) was quite similar to what you would expect after reading the first books (fighter -> barbarian -> ranger). But yeah, books and D&D character sheets don't really get along that well (Elminster and his gender bender multiclassing...) About "Tempest Fighter", I was just mentioning the 4E equivalent to his combat style.

Other...actually all of the above, and Blackguard. <=== Tiefling face
There's no "black character class" so i'd say Warlock or some Necromancer is missing.
Pala should be in defoult
I think they should just exercise a little abstraction on this, and produce a "Devout Fighter" class. Whether that's a Paladin or a Blackguard would depend on what deity you selected.

It's only natural that books tend to be a lot more flexible with classes. For one, it wouldn't make sense to put level caps (or just plain levels for that matter) in a novel. It's also reasonable for a character in a novel to be a fighter/wizard/rogue/bard/etc/etc combo and excel in all classes, especially if you've had hundreds of years to do whatever you want to do.

He is more of a tempest ranger.
There is this game - demonstone I think - you can play drizzt in it(as envisioned by RA Salvatore as he was involved in game)
He is more of a tempest two handed scimtar wielding jumping jack slasher. (though the emo feat was missing)
p.s. I never miss chances to make fun of any overused character who is not selunite
I don't think they ever actually mentioned Drizzt by name in this game so far, as well as in any NWO promos. That would be a legal issue with R. A. Salvatore ..... or is his work owned by whoever owns D&D rights at the time? I don't know. But I've only heard implications of Drizzt, not the name literally.

To be fair, it's not -that- much of a stretch. A few early levels in fighter from his training with his pappy and living in Menzoberranzan, a level or two in barbarian while he was living in the underdark, a few levels in ranger from his time with Montolio Debrouchee, and has been taking levels in ranger ever since.

The stories and information posted here are artistic works of fiction and falsehood. Only a fool would take anything posted here as fact.

The game is based on the setting laid down by one of the newer sets of R.A. Salvatore's books (one of them is even called Neverwinter). I learned about this game due to a promotion of it in one of those books.

It depends on the edition of the game. You're limited to only a single second class in 4ed that I know of (I've only read the 1st PHB, but haven't really played PnP since right before 3rd ed, so don't know if they added more options in source books), and only get a few limited benefits from your second class at that. And 1st and 2nd ed technically didn't allow those class combinations for elves (I allowed anything in my campaigns, but that was just me >.>).
You would also take a hit on the potential of some of your ranger abilities in 3rd ed, since some of them were based on class level. I suppose you could make it work in 3rd ed if you only took just a few levels of fighter and barb, then went ranger the rest of the way. But Drizzt was already one of the finest fighters in Menzoberranzan by the time he went renegade, which was years before he even met Montolio and got proper ranger training. He also had excellent stealth skills before that despite being a only fighter (and maybe barbarian after he went rogue and developed raging abilities while he lived like a savage in the wilds of the Underdark), which was impossible in old D&D.
All in all, skill based systems and written (non-game) stories allow for better multiclassing/cross-professions.
I read from various sources that now they are simply chosen champions of a deity, so can there be paladins of Asmodeus?
Paladins can be anything in 4ed. I tend to think of them as "Champions", which is a more neutral term, and can potentially apply to anyone that's devoted to a cause.

The Paladin will be released with the Dragonborn race, but it will be the last to be released because the devs are still trying to figure how much bouncy are dragon mammaries due to +2 STR & +2 CHA. Bad joke... I know
The Paladin builds look the same as the Fighter ones plus a couple Cleric spells, as both of them are a Two-Handed Weapon DPS / Shield and Weapon Tank. It should be the easiest one to do as most animations will probably be the same.

So what do we have atm?
Defenders: Guardian Fighter
Great Weapon Fighter
Leaders: Devoted Cleric
**Unknown**
Strikers: Trickster Rogue
**Unknown**
Controllers: "Control" Wizard
**Unknown**
First off I believe from images that our Control wizard is a combo of the Wand/Staff/Tomb & Orb Wizard, as images show all items in use. (Gil correct me on this if I am off base).
So, who do we add to round out this cast of characters? I feel that 2 options per role, for 8 classes makes sense at release.
So for the second controller, I am going with the Invoker (preserving or wrathful). Looking at 4e I think they compliment the "Control" wizard nicely, both having certain strengths the other doesn't have.
For the second striker, I am going to say Sorcerer, but not what specific type. I chose Sorcerer due to it's awesome AoE abilities, which compliment the Tricksters fantastic single target abilities.
For the second leader, I am going to say the Shaman, not sure on sub type again, maybe Bear. Once again the class compliments the Devoted Cleric well
Okay so why did I pick these classes? Simple really; in each role, I have picked a class that offers a very good AoE class to compliment the single target class already known, just like the classes in the Defender role.
I see many other classes being released later; Ranger for sure, Barbarian maybe, heck lets get them all. I am most likely wrong on some of these, (possibly all), but these just feel right to me as an old MMO player.
The rationale for five classes was that the devs said they'd rather make those five classes feel different and offer deep customization, rather than a dozen half-done classes that were never fleshed out.
Great Weapon users can be anything < we can CC and we can Defend and DPS and EVUUUUUUUUUUUUUURITHIIIIIING!!!!!!!!
except for maybe heal here and there
but seriously Great Weapon Users would also be Strikers next to the rogue class but could also be used as a filler for crowd control or tanking if built with those purposes in mind ofc

Because they're lame
(Cryptic, I mean... I actually like everyone of those classes and would have likely tried Warlock for my main :P)
They just want you to suffer!
Cryptic I mean. More you suffer, more you will like when they release it slowly.

They just want me to re-roll my main if/when they add the class I actually want to play
(probably Warlock or maybe Bard--something mystical and Cha-based)

1) Everything would have less polish, because the same number of developer hours went to more things.
2) There'd be nothing new to give us later.
Slow and steady wins the race. That's how MMOs work. Ultima Online is still adding new features.
