@ xearrik:
So far, at least in STO, Cryptic has managed to avoid an all-out pay to win model with their lockbox and C-store stuff. Some will claim that they have gone that way, but as many more will cite personal experience with elements obtained directly from core gameplay that counter that concern.

I personally don't like lockboxes because of the gambling aspect they represent. But at the same time, with the ability to earn secondary currency in-game and trade it for Zen nothing is beyond reach for even players who refuse to spend a dime on direct Zen purchases. We really do not HAVE to pay anything, unless we want to make things a little easier on ourselves...

Copper Pieces - NW equivilant to energy credits
Silver Pieces - NW equivilant to Gold Pressed Latinum
Gold Pieces - NW Equivilant to Dilithium
Platinum Pieces - Zen
Pollished Gemstones - NW Equivilant to Lobi Crystals.

The above is just hypothetical, Like I said, the breakdown will probably work differently.

Just a clarification with 4th ed rules and Astral Diamonds.

100 copper=1 silver piece
100 silver=1 gold piece
100 gold= 1 platinum piece.

technically 1,000,000 gold or 1000 platinum=1 Astral Diamond.

However, Cryptic will use this Astral Diamond (known as AD) resource as a secondary currency, and this exchange rate will NOT be used, but the ZEN exchange rate as mentioned in previous posts as EXCEPTIONALLY HIGHLY likely of being used.

Residuum is another D&D (PnP) resource where it's 500,000 gp per pound, since it is the dust from a disenchanted magic item (the value is 20% of a magic item's value after disenchantment.) However, all I can say is it appears not to be used as a currency. I know it's often used in both rituals and crafting, and since I'm hearing nothing about rituals, I'm betting it could be used in the latter.

Thanks for the clarification. I figured I wasn't correct in my assumption.

Yeah, as Storm said. They are referring to just the "Temporal Locked Boxes." They did similar will all the earlier ones too, Ferengi, Cardassian... I don't see anywhere a statement of all locked boxes, just the ending of the Temporals. All the earlier ones have been similarly temporary in their availability, often surrounding some new content release or ships.

All this shows me is that they are about to offer a new locked box.
Just to confirm this: They just released the newest Locked Box in STO, it is called a "Dominion Locked Box."

I hate lockboxes as much as the next person, but this IS a free to play game. I understand they have to make money somehow. So, if I have to have lockboxes so they can publish a game and let me play it for the affordable cost of not a damn thing, then I will take 'em! I do agree that they shouldn't have HAMSTER items in them. They also shouldn't have high-end tier items either. I think the best items should only be able to be gotten through crafting. Then again, with a f2p game, in order to make the best gear they would probably make you buy the mats you need to make the item from the store anyway.

I guess all I wanted to say is I don't mind any of that if I get to play the game. In fact, I will even buy some keys to help the game keep going if it's good enough.

That's from Dragonlance, right?

Electrum is an original D&D currency from Basic D&D that vanished in 4th edition. Dragonlance's main currency is Steel Pieces. Electrum is just a mix of silver and gold, with a little copper. In second edition, 2 electrum was equal to one gold. Electrum and Platinum were listed as being currency that wasn't widely used and was more often found in treasure from monsters.

I think Truth is referring to our Real World Byzantine Empire, that used Electrum widely and was the largest producer of it our world had ever known. It's use dates back around 8,000 years.

I don't recall off-hand of any specific empire in the Realms that had any claims of origin for Electrum, but then again there are so many currencies in the Realms, I am sure I could have overlooked this over the many years.

League of Legends shows you don't need lockboxes and cosmetics alone can work to make profits in a F2P game.

League of Legends shows you don't need lockboxes and cosmetics alone can work to make profits in a F2P game.

Technically LoL makes a hefty part of its profits off of more then just cosmetics. You can a also purchase character with money. I quit playing the game because their warnings and banns are given out to freely. So this may have changed. But when ever they release a character now the new character always over powered for a short period of time. If they release one that is under powered. They will buff him/her in a couple of weeks. This is an obvious play to make people quickly buy them with cash rather then wait and take the time to unlock them with game earned points.

Everything bellow is off topic: LoL really pissed me off. I can dig up the e-mails and link them if you don't believe me. But warnings and banns are too random because they are controlled by players. I got in trouble 2 times before I just gave up and quit the game.

First time I got a warning because my team whole team reported me for not helping out the team, refusing to assist with any fights. My K/D/A rate was clearly listed on the report.

My kill/death/assist was 16/4/8. My teams K/D was 24/30..... So how the hell was I not helping the team when i was responsible for two thirds of the teams kills and was present for the other 1/3........

The second time was a 3 day bann. I was reported for using foul language. I will now quote my self.

"Garen come over here we need you"
"Stop jungling man what wrong with you!!!"
"We are 30 minutes into the game! Are you stupid or something? Stop killing the wraiths and join us in the freaking team fight! We need you!"
"Do you want to win or what!"

I got the e-mail and then I quit... I've seen other people who got warnings and banns because of complete HAMSTER too.

Edit: That second fellow was in ranked. I don't mind stupid people like that in non-ranked. But ranked is for competitive play. Your suppose to at least try to win.
