An old veteran player of Dungeons and Dragons.......been playing since 1982.
And when I say Dungeons and Dragons..I mean that......Not Advanced Dungeons and Dragons...which turned into your Wizards of the Coast pen and paper game loosely adapted from the original....Basic, Expert, Companion, Master, IMMMORTAL FTW
We have been running a campaign for almost 14 years now in the world of Mystarra.
That being said our world is a compilation of DnD and 1st edition rules.
I am excited but VERY GUARDED about this game. I am a beta STO player so I will , hopefully, get to play this game before i buy it.
From watching the videos presented and reading, in depth , much of what the devs have written and player base. it looks to me this will be a game that is not really a pen and paper conversion. That would be a daunting process to create something true to the original.
What I will be looking for, if they wish to have me as a consumer, is a large world able to be explored fully with much interactions and potential for adventure. I will be looking for solo playability as well as being able to get a mercenary and then of course full sized groups. I am also hoping for multi classed potential. Also the ability to tailor your own class from the basics if so desired....a fighter who dual wields and can track in the wilderness ......Or a mage who wields a battle axe and is prone to wild magic when he rages......lastly i will be looking for a world that has a deep well developed, or at least will eventually be that way, in terms of crafting. Not the way they do it in STO....Vanguard is a great example of how to do it right.
I play STO and that has somewhat tainted my opinions on the ability of Cryptic to create a game that is quality to me. I am giving the powers that be one more chance with this MMO. I hope they dont fail me.
Hello to all you guys and maybe we will cross swords one day

Hey, welcome to the forums.
Why the AD&D hate? :-(
Third and Fourth I can understand but AD&D. Oh well to each his own. I grew up playing AD&D pen and paper so I must just be biased.
As for having a true conversion from Pen and Paper to a video game there really hasn't ever been one. Games like Baldur's Gate and Neverwinter Nights have stuck to and loyal to the pen and paper versions as much as possible but it's not even a 'daunting' task, it's outright impossible at least at this point in time.
But just because it's adapted mechanics to be a bit more friendly to a video game environment doesn't necessarily bode badly for the game. I had the same fears as you did when I heard how much literary liscencing they've been taking but after seeing all it has to offer I'm not too concerned anymore. Hopefully with time you'll forgive their stray from the fourth edition rule-set.

Let me start off with saying, I agree completely yet sadly a lot of these features are still in the air.
Multiclassing for one is something which isn't well supported in 4th Ed as far as I've been told. That's not to say Cryptic won't add it but from everything I have heard from fourth edition fans, there's really a bigger emphasis on remaining one class.
Bottom line is as this point I agree with your desires on the classing system but they haven't released any information really. Look through the forums you'll find loads of people share your fears as well!
Cryptic has also stated consistently that they want to promote all gameplay styles. I am a solo/duo player myself and I have no fear there will be plenty of things for us to do in game without feeling forced into partying up.
As for crafting...as little as they've said about some of the classes they have said nothing about crafting whatsoever. To me crafting has to compliment drops found in the game so that there's reasons to go adventuring beyond looking for crafting supplies.
Welcome to the NW Forums though. It's great to see that some of the old school D&D players are at least interested enough to check the game out even if they have some trepidation about it.
There is no hatred of the ADnD...I am just not a fan of Lizards of the coast. 2 hobbies I loved dearly were destroyed by them.....the 2nd being L5r.
I Play TSR DnD almost weekly. I also hope they try to steer clear of the Turbine style of MMos for ADnD.
Only time will tell.....

Welcome to the community adabis!
But, since TSR hosed Gary and Dave out of royalties, they are therefore "just as evil" and must be hated to death...well, to the death they are in now. Therefore, since you don't only play the red box and/or Chainmail only, you're now supporting the enemy after these events. You're not a purist!
No, I'm not being serious, but the whole thing is silly. WotC didn't ruin the product. Their marketing of said product determines that outcome. You can play the earlier editions as much as you want and nobody will stop you. Heck, D&D Next (5th ed) SUPPORTS mixing and matching ALL editions and rules options.
I'll just stop there in regards to 3rd and 4th edition since plenty of other people have already discussed this to death by now, and I left my troll shield in my other breeches.
As for the game itself and how it and 4th ed works, I made a FAQ for newcomers. The second section (or post) lists the game-play basics and can help you understand the rudimentary. Multi-classing and hybrid classing are the methods of multiple classes for any character, but its conversion is anything but simple into an MMO from tabletop. That info I left out of the FAQ for that reason but explained it in a post here.
Not gonna debate Gygax and his 2nd edition being cut out by the official 2nd..it is all conjecture and to be honest let him rest in peace.
i am here for love of the game
I want my dwarves with attack ranks and my elves as fghter mages..my halflings..well they are cute and make squeels whe ya toss em in the stew.....and my fighters to be called fighting men.
See ya all around

But again, welcome to Neverwinter!
I loved Hollow World. 1st & 2nd edition fan here, myself.
