I may be interested in joining you as part of your story team. Mind if I ask a few general questions regarding rules that should be universal (e.g. regardless of what tools Cryptic gives us in-game)?

One of the things that always bugged me about RP servers/guilds is that people try to RP in guild chat or in other long-distance methods. I am of the belief that I can only talk to you if I'm in the room with you (and in large, crowded rooms, I may need to be standing next to you and yelling). What are your thoughts on that?

Also, what about the players coming up with outlandish back stories? In many RP settings, it seems like everyone is a demon/angel spawn and exiled legitimate heir to some crown. Thoughts?

Reillan makes a valid point. Although I think we must wait until we learn more about the format of the game. That being said, I'm hoping this guild encourages intrigue and character immersion over outlandish one-up-manship. Perhaps those who are interested in joining can write up a bio/backstory of their character to submit to LadyHonda? It is, after all, her guild to lead.

    Just a suggestion

Outlandish one-up-manship happens. I think it grows from the tendency to ex-terpolate the heroic individual character from the entire population. Each character represents the top of a population pyramid that encompasses thousands of unseen and unheard-from townspeople. All of the player characters are competing for individuality in a very narrow range of fantasy reality (ha! great oxymoron!).

Many fall back on those fictional characters they enjoyed and identified with in literature even to the point of simply borrowing their traits and sometimes their names. This offers the player a well developed and comprehensive character that is recognizable and coherent to all that meet him or her. The problem is not too apparent in most PnP situations because there might be only four to ten player characters active in a single session.

Unfortunately, when enough practice this shortcut stereotypicality in a multiplayer game, the effect is a session population full of clones striving for unique existence.

While I agree in most situations, skilled RPers have learned that a unique *story* is much more important than epic leetness. My greatest RP character of all time was actually a character who was woefully pathetic when it came to combat - a Fighter/Champion of Torm who had basically none of the uber high-damage abilities of any of the other classes, and so he was completely and totally reliant on other people around him to boost his powers. The people I surrounded myself with in that game were similarly not attempting to min-max their stats, but rather just create interesting and useful characters. A 26th lvl wizard is, admittedly, a powerful character, but if he's humble rather than boasting about how we can only kill stuff because he's got us buffed with 20 different spells, his strength is more in his friendships and alliances than in his Hellblast.

Aye, there's the rub...skilled RPers. I would wager that most of the people we have played PnP DnD with are close to that level. Many players of online games have no interest in role play, and the games themselves seldom supply even a smidge of the limitations supplied by a good DM.

Reillan, you hit the nail on the head when you mentioned the tendency to RP in long distance chat. Many of the residents of NWO will have never played anything but computer games that call themselves role playing games. They operate by a whole different set of rules. Rules that are specific to the genre of online role playing games.

This begs the question as to who should really change their expectations and behaviors when playing in an online role playing environment.

Sadly, I'd simply rather not RP at all than adapt to what I consider "bad RP" :)

A refreshing conversation with well thought out opinions. Once more, this is Lady Honda's thread to gather and sift through those who post in the hope of putting together a Roleplay Guild. If Neverwinter is anything close to the concept being put forth, it just might be able to accomodate this goal. If there is a platform for extended roleplay, intrigue, and interaction within her group, it will certainly weed out those 'quasi-rps' who constantly itch to raid, loot, & kill. I'm interested to see how this guild's format will take shape (and how it will react to it's members).

    Cautiously Optimistic

    For reillan,

Roleplaying is done locally. Any community chat will be an ooc link to other players. Allowing you to coordinate your rp times.

Currently I host a STO Rp Community. Where we have individual role playing groups and GM all playing out there adventures on Starship. Granted I don't know what kind of set up This NWN will provide us with. However I am aware that the chat channels will be all xmpp. Which means you'll be able to contact anyone since all our accounts are part of an @Cyrpticspace.com

So wethere we have collective group of guilds, or the rp community is weak and we are forced to have individual groups much like your D&D pen and paper. Eatherway! I'll compensate for what we have available.

Very intersting place here. I'll be keeping an eye on this.

Been itching for some RP. Just now starting to get some free time. I usually check out the PW's of NWN and NWN2. Haven't heard back from any of the guilds here so I hope that you LadyHonda will at least give a light reply.;)

    I think I understand.

I've noticed in the past how online roleplayers can be outdone simply because they might want to keep to the tradition of a barbarian tribe for example.

So if you wanted to make a guild of primarily elven rangers you would suffer unless you had an ally guild. However if you are a roleplaying guild you will only want to keep friends with other roleplaying guilds because this enhances the story and game experience. Therefore, and correct me if I am wrong, if a union is formed of like-minded roleplayers then it is much easier to police things OOC and stay with being IC.

Anyway, I wouldn't mind helping lead a thieves/spy guild. Send me a PM when you see this.

I'm truly looking forward to this endeavor. The idea of factions within a guild (hopefully not a pvp pwnfest) to be played out in roleplay, intrigue, and adventure truly gives me hope that this game will be a winner. While I am best playing a 'grandfatherly, finger wagging, overbearing but harmless pure paladin' I am open to assisting where ever is needed to fill a void in Lady Honda's concept...even a cowardly snivveling scoundrel of a rogue names 'Packrat' *grins*

    Standing By...

This be something to keep an eye on. Never did the whole RPing stuff in games yet am an avid reader of books n such, started reading Dragonlance backin in 6th grade in ohh... back in '92 and through high school. With Neverwinter I'm going to make a change of RPing this time round in gaming, think that will be the jewel of Nevewinter. So would be a fledgling RPer.

Does the LadyHonda have any guild sites or anything that people converse at on this endeavor?

I'd be a part of the Players group, creative storytelling was never my thing and quite frankly too busy to really put in that kind of comittment.

LadyHonda has a link to her STO fleet message board in her sig, I think. It would probably give you a good idea of how their preferred rp format works.

Currently I do not. As the game comes closer I'll build one like my 22nd Mobile Daedalus Webbie. At this time let's just check back on this thread. I mean we don't even have clear picture of what kind of classes they are offering. I want to see if there's an interest in this sort of gaming.

Very interesting read. I played PnP 1st Ed up until 3rd Ed but sadly the members moved away and that died. Being stuck in South Africa means that there isn't a lot of RP that happens anymore.

Hopefully with this being developed, there will be a lot more RPing with like-minded individuals and a lot more diverse stories to develop within Neverwinter. I have got plenty of stories buzzing around this head of mine! :p

Happy to help when more of a structure is in place.:)

I would be VERY interested in this as well.

I did P&P RP for a long, long time. And then text based RP both on AOL (the Arena forums) and in Simutronic's DragonRealms game.

Trying to find RP in WoW and now Rift is horribly difficult and I would LOVE to get into something like this here from the ground up.

I will be watching this thread with great interest!

NWN is a bit down the pipe. Though, once we accutally have pre-order date I plan to start the ball on all this.
