As many of you are aware, the launch of Infernal Descent brought with it some unexpected behavior with the Stardock Lockbox. Compared with a normal launch day lockbox, the Stardock Lockbox awarded more legendary mounts while it was active - we will cover that in a moment.
First, no one that got a legendary mount from that box has to worry. The mount is yours to enjoy, and if it was your first legendary mount then congratulations!
So what happened there?
We have been exploring improved chase item odds in lockboxes internally. This has been an ongoing experiment, and while it wasn't ready to release yet for a few reasons, the exploratory work had been done during the same time as other Infernal Descent (M18) work. When we decided to hold the changes for a later release, we missed the Stardock lockbox and players experienced a partial set of changes to that lock box in the early hours of launch
Why are we exploring changes to lock boxes? While these chase items are meant to be rare and valuable, they may be more difficult to acquire than is good for the long term health of the game. With this in mind, we have been experimenting with ways to improve the experience for everyone.
We did not intend to release any changes until this had been discussed with the community and more thoroughly with the team. We alluded to some exploration of this variety in online streams, but no final plan has been decided on yet. Before committing to changes of this type, we want to make sure that the changes overall felt good to the player base and equally work for the business.
We apologize for this error and we are actively working to improve our release quality in regards to both our development pipeline and our QA test plans. Issues like this, in time, will hopefully become a thing of the past.
Let’s use this opportunity to collaborate on this aspect of the game as we did with the accessibility topic and evolve VIP. The discussion for the CDP Topic: VIP can be found here.

Dear Chris,
In a word: No.
In more words: Are you kidding me? There is frankly no excuse that you or anyone else at Cryptic can conjure up to explain away what happened, nor to soften the blow to those players who didn't 'get lucky' by abusing a bug within a 5-minute window of time upon Mod 18's launch.
The bug pertaining to the lockbox in question was reported 9 days before Mod 18 launched thanks to the efforts of a player who caught it on the preview server. He even took the time to send you lot at Cryptic a video recording showing step-for-step how he was able to exploit the bug. 9 days! And yet it still makes it through to the live server. That is the 'business-as-usual' so-called 'quality' we've come to expect of this dev team and this game, and frankly, it's simply not good enough.
I don't care how understaffed you may or may not be - Cryptic is not some tiny indie dev team (Perfect World is a large and financially wealthy publisher/backer), nor do I care that Cryptic is focused on getting the Magic The Gathering' game ready (which, for those interested, is now no longer a full-on MMO, but instead a single-player loot game with social hubs, and the ability for one or two other players to join you while questing. There is no large-open world, nor open theme park settings).
You seem like a decent sort, Chris, and upon reading your initial posting upon joining Cryptic, I felt some cautious optimism about the course of Neverwinter which I hadn't felt in years. There were (and still are) good reasons why I was cautious. This latest debacle, how it's been handled (which is to say that it hasn't), and the subsequent "Hey guys! Let's just try to move on and get along" themed post (because that's what your post above amounts to) is not good enough. Your tone seems sincere, and for that I can and do grant you some grudging acknowledgement, but the message contained within is HAMSTER poor. I don't care why what happened, happened (although it's interesting enough from a knowledge perspective); what I do care about is what the consequences were, and what is being done to rectify it (which is nothing - not a damn thing).
This is pathetic, and while you speak of "the long-term health of the game," that boat sailed long ago, and Cryptic missed it. This game is closing in on being 7-years old. It's way past time that the seemingly endless list of bugs - of which many of them have been around for years (and yes, they've been reported repeatedly) - be put down at long last. There is absolutely no sign that the quality of the game is improving - not in the short-term nor the long-term. Quite the opposite in fact: most everything seems to be getting worse.
On these grounds alone (though there are certainly more), I simply can not in good faith nor conscience recommend any player - new or old - keep investing real money in this game. Indeed, I would strongly recommend everyone - heavily invested or not in to Neverwinter - look at the plethora of other games (many of far better quality and with far superior customer treatment) be examined and given due consideration.
If this is what 'fixing' Neverwinter looks like, don't bother. Save the man-hours, the financial costs, and the hassle and the stress it places on the staff, and place the game in permanent maintenance-mode. This is much too little, much too late - indeed, it does more harm than good, and is actively exacerbating the wrongs that ail Neverwinter.
You will have to do so much better to even have a shred of hope of ever seeing my money transfer over to your company coffers via this product as well as any other Cryptic/Perfect World product - past, present, and future.
Instead of realizing that they plan to probably make legendary mounts more accessible so people won't have to open lockboxes for 2-3 years to get 1 legendary mount between their 10 toons. This likely ends up with more legendary mounts in the game at a cheaper price point on the resale (auction) market. It would add more balance to the game as the damage gap between new and "skilled" players get smaller. It would allow the devs an excuse to make the game a little harder also since it would be easier to gain that legendary combat power or mount bonus that makes content easier. Also all you complaining about not getting one would get one sooner.
I will say if this error really was a glimpse at how accessible the legendary mounts may be, I won't complain beyond the normal.. "These suck"
Some people still don't get it. We will get leg. mount through hell pit event. Well, I hope so, because as a new player i don't know what is for sure in this game aynmore. Sometimes for exploits you can get ban and sometimes you can get leg mount. I'am confused. I'am pretty sure i'll not spend a dime into this because this is madness. Anyway. It's not about leg, it's about fair play. I don't want anything for me, but people with VIP should get something. Why are they wrong/guilty because they were on job instead of waiting to use that exploit ?!?! This is not right at all.

Not everybody was able to complete the first Hell Pit event. Unless it is installed as a permanent seasonal event, "we" are not guaranteed to get a free legendary mount. Unless we can log into the first five minutes of Mod 19...
5 Minute special event is not enough time. And there was no remind new Event will start.
12M AD = 40K RTQ = 300 Days (300*20Minutes Playtime=100 Hours RTQ, wipes not counted, queue waiting time not counted) - This is the path you have to go with not another one possible less amount of time is needed. It's just too much. If you don't understand this, you just don't understand your community. We are normal people want same Rules to everyone like in real life. We want Justice and Fairplay. That being said - the only option was to remove the mounts. I don't have a legendary Mount and I don't need one for compensation. Just keep it. That you cannot handle the situation, sit it out, doing more harm than good here. You want feedback only for advertising purposes. We shall think "they care" - but you don't. As we can see you don't even read bug forum. I play Neverwinter for a reason. It's not an Asia Grinder. And now I got censored about this topic with an removed post. Only because it's uncomfortable. Is this now the Great Wall? Part of Mod 18? I will not help destroy this Game. People. It's a great game - keep playing. And I will not tell anyone to stop with this game. But I can tell you one thing. If I were CEO of Cryptic I would have fired you now. I don't get it. You promote to cheat. The playerbase - as you can see want you to act - but you don't do anything. Listen to your community. I don't understand for what reason we have a community management if they are not willing to serve the community. Maybe better take resources for programmers instead. Angering the playerbase is no community management - it's gravedigging.
Only for illustration: Will we see in future something like - WTT 1 major bug for 3 minor bugs. WTT major glitch for 10 preservation Wards... come on. I saw you on twitch. You can do better.
Now I will enjoy the game. Again. It's a great game.
This is the first legal bug in game... Bad move cryptic... Cryptic had banned many people for ravenloft bug for gain a bit of astral diamonds.. And now that the player gain more more more diamons not ban? Ridicolous... This is uncorretly for the player that play game in legacy and don't have open stardock box
I think that now cryptic should be give 1 stargock leggendary box bounded at all players that is online when bug is live... I don t need it but is the right move for all players i think
It seems unbelievably ridiculous that you did not just roll the database back. Giving a small subset of the population a free legendary mount just sucks. Time after time since the end of November I have ended up feeling ripped off. Lowering discounts, removing Black Friday bonuses for zen purchases and giving free legendary mounts to people who are not me. It is like nobody running the show understands basic human psychology. Maybe think things through before you make decisions.
It's nice to see they didn't ban people who got one, my only concern is those ***holes that try to make irl money off the game abusing this w/ many accounts. I would be so grateful if they gave those who logged in that day and didn't get one, a free bta leg stardock mount pack, but it's not the end of the world to me if they don't either (and they probably wont, that would be insanely awesome if they actually did).
Been playing since ToD was released and haven't gotten a leg drop from a lockbox yet, bought the ones I do have, while there is a tinge of angst regarding this issue, mostly I feel like it's in the past, forget about it.
As a player since Beta, VIP since it went live and purchaser of keys over the years I've managed to get three legendary mounts. All of them purchased from the AH with my saved up AD. If they are going to make getting the legendary mounts "easier" I'm all for it.
The issue I have with this whole situation is that a known bug, was once again introduced into the game, and is just brushed aside. A bug that has rewarded countless players with a $$$ mount. Meanwhile you have had past bugs introduced (far less $$$) and players were banned/items removed. I understand the game is not as popular as it once was and they seem to be trying not to anger the playerbase they have left but these kind of inconsistencies are not good.
They don't have a good record of fixing bugs so i was pretty sure the bug would go live, but i still didn't abuse it or expect them to ... ah HAMSTER it why even bother anymore, just add another reason to the list of why i shouldn't waste my time with this game this year
Funny, I read the official statement to mean box was working as intended. They developed a lockbox with odds that can be updated after release, but forgot to deactivate it for this release. They don't want us learning the odds on preview and need a way to adjust loot to supply and demand. That's how I understand it anyway..
Well, pretty new player here and all I am gunna say is.. just another reason I am finding to become a new leaver once my current VIP expires. This is just total BS. Exploiting bugs is not good in any way shape or form and at the very least a roll back should of been performed and players refunded their ZEN before patching. At the very, very least all those leggy mounts should of been changed to BtA without hesitation and any being sold on the AH (yes there were many) should of been removed from the game. This is just been handled terrabadly and shows a sincere lack of respect for the playerbase... but congrats if it was your first leggy... wow, just WOW!!!
You guys moan so much and I get it I been playing since 2014 never got a leg mount from lock box and it sucks still dont own a leg mount. The thing is guys weather there was a bug or not it dont matter, what other people do In game weather it be taking advantage of bugs or grinding for years. Most of us play the game for the game and if the developers what to make our lives better by trying to improve drop rates of leg mounts then that's awesome it means you wont have to wait another 6 years just to complain that's it's been 12 years and still no leg mount. Yes they messed up but they are human beings and HAMSTER happens. They still work hard despite the HAMSTER you give them they still release regular content despite financial constraints so stop being babies and leave feedback not complaints or rants about it being un fair. Love this game love playing it with friends and yes I wish I could report half the player base for being stupid or annoying but every games has them people every game has bugs glitches mistakes happen.

It is their JOB to develop content! They aren't doing it as some form of benevolent charity. Don't fall prey to Stockholm Syndrome.
well as always no satisfaction or balance and the few get the reward..yes grats to them and well that other thing to everyone else. formally a constant supporting member (vip) and bountiful HAMSTER drops for it,never more! better to just wait till the next mistake, odds of that seem better than any fair reward system. yet another reason will never spend another dime on this game...no credibility left at all. and just as lazy on addressing KNOWN issues. fair.... right, who cares, long as sales are good...;(

I got my 5th legendary mount in 2 yrs on thursday night(xbox). With free keys no less. While I would love to see better odds on the legendary mounts, I can see the people that use them as their "cash flow" from the AH complaining hugely if there was to be any increase in legendary mount drops.

Meanwhile, some of us have been playing for more than 2 years, and never seen a single legendary mount drop. RNGesus does not love us all equally.
I'm confused...with Barovia, you knew months in advance, began quietly investigating, and then rewarded the worst offenders with permabans and moderate offenders with temporary bans. In this case, you knew 9 days out and rewarded the worst offenders with leg packs? Please tell me some devs got some written warnings placed in their permanent records? Or maybe Cryptic is Now Hiring? That being said, I am all for an increase in the drop rate of legendaries.
The people in Barovia went out of their way to glitch an instance. The people at m18 launch opened a lockox. The difference is fairly obvious.
Cryptic will only declare opening a lockbox to be an exploit the day they want to kill their game's income. This was 100% the studio's fault and no one else's.

On barovia they never write on game watch out there this glitch to not use... i not used cuz i read forum so i was safe but ppl who didint read forum have did and got ban.they had all time to fix this without ban ppl. So is like banning ppl for when was possible glitch drufi or when with portobellos wand yu was able to re-enter in boss fight during dingeons without using scroll ...if yu jave a knowed issue is better advertising ppl in game on main page with a message ... On consolle we havent see any message ..
.ps .
why they didnt ban ppl for green broken insigna on mod16. ppl with green insigna with 500k power and ridiculus equip take advantage on lomm drop..they wasnt ban why? Thats all ok to me but barovia issue was bad managed to me. And cris know this very well. Ban ppl is like auto nerf incoming $.better fix the game and just remove illegal ad easy easy
Like people who went out of their way to glitch Drufi? And with barovia they knew about it, from preview server, months in advance and still let it go live on all three platforms. And they warned us, weeks after it went live and then had to ban like 90% of the playerbase whether they stopped doing it after the warning or not. And from what I thought I read, people used a "trick" to get the leg packs, or at least some did. Maybe I read wrong though. Point being, I think people look for broken mechanics in games all the time, whether it be to exploit the system, or whether it's for fun, what it boils down to is how the game studio deals with the people who find the glitches and report them, and then how they deal with the aftermath of the glitches. Caturday we saw a rollback, not sure they ever fixed Drufi, you can still use the wand to re-enter some boss fights, Barovia saw mass bans and removal of items, and stardock we see....congratulations on winning your first leg pack? I just wish there was more emphasis placed on the info coming out of preview server, and I'd like to see more uniformity in dealing with the glitches. Cuz there will be glitches, and maybe they can't always stop them from going live, but they can have a definitive way of dealing with them so that we know going forward what to expect. The lockbox may have been a gray area as far as whether people were exploiting it against TOS but I'm still a bit surprised that they didn't shut it down sooner tbh. I'm on Xbox myself so it doesn't affect me as far as I know, guess I'll find out tomorrow I kinda feel bad for the devs who are probably scrambling to do fixes, when their intent was to make things better for the game and players.
Server was up for maybe 5 mins and the bug/issue was completely outside the players' hands. Open a Stardock box inside that time window and you had a greatly enhanced chance to get the legendary pack. That's all that happened. It took those few minutes for someone at Cryptic to realize what was going on and get the server shut back down.
While I don't think there has ever been an official statement, economic exploits like Caturday or Barovia tend to get action taken against peoples' accounts. Dungeon/Combat/PVP exploits do not. Not all offenses are treated equally. This is true both in the game and outside it.
And again, there was no exploit with the Stardock boxes. Cryptic messed up the odds and let it go live. People used keys in the normal way and because of the heightened drop rate, got a lot more legendaries than the studio intended.

why they didnt ban ppl for green broken insigna on mod16.
ppl with green insigna with 500k power and ridiculus equip take advantage on lomm drop..they wasnt ban why?
Thats all ok to me but barovia issue was bad managed to me. And cris know this very well. Ban ppl is like auto nerf incoming $.better fix the game and just remove illegal ad easy easy
