Official Feedback Thread: Storm King’s Thunder Campaign

ontheriverontheriver Member, NW_CrypticDev, Cryptic Developer Posts: 71 Cryptic Developer
On this preview build, players will have access to the new campaign: Storm King’s Thunder.

Access

You’ll need to be on the Preview Shard to test the campaign, but you should be able to earn currency and progress the campaign immediately.

Features

  • New campaign that paces progress through the content, unlocking new zones as players progress
  • Repeatable tasks that improve the campaign store as players progress
  • New series of boons for players to choose from as they progress through the campaign

Known Issues

  • Campaign window UI is currently not implemented.
    • You can still provide feedback on the current screen, but it is placeholder art subject to change over the coming weeks
  • Voninblod earn rates and costs are still subject to change.
  • Missing icons.

Feedback Desired

We’re interested in any feedback you have about the campaign as you play in the new zones. Tasks should unlock in a relatively timely manner, and players should feel like they are making progress. Some things to consider:
  • Can you unlock all the tasks?
  • Are you earning campaign progress at a steady rate?
  • Is it clear how to engage in the system? Where to go, what to do, how to earn the currencies you need?
Here’s how to give feedback:
  • Respond to this forum post.
  • Type: Bug or Feedback (Please only choose one)
  • Format: Please use boldface text for the Type, and then type your feedback in the body of your post. If you are listing a bug please have this text in RED, and if you are posting an opinion or feedback please use LIGHT BLUE.
  • Concise feedback is best
  • Screenshots are much appreciated

Examples of Feedback

Bug: I can’t complete the task to progress to Lonelywood
I have the correct currency and meet all other requirements, but the task never completes.

Feedback: Not earning Ten Town Supplies fast enough
I don't get enough Ten Towns supplies from doing the daily quests. It feels like it would take a long time to complete the first zone.

C'mon, don't spam unrelated feedback everywhere just because you have a captive audience.

    Feedback: campaign costs
Astral diamond fees have snuck back in for the new boons. Y'all just removed them from the older campaigns for the good of all. It doesn't seem right to be putting them back in. Not sure if bug.

    Feedback: the boons
At a glance, the new boons were not going to contribute a whole lot of power creep. This is probably a good design decision, but means reception of the boons themselves might be unenthusiastic, because of players being used to getting more for their effort. I also realize these things are hard to balance across game modes, as something the tickles a dungeon boss can be a substantial chunk of player hitpoints. Still, 1500 damage seems terribly small. I know not having cooldowns is also highly problematic, especially in PvP.

    Bug Healing warmth tooltip
The tooltip seems to miss a verb; either hit, burn or deal?
    Feedback Charging AD for boons?
You removed this in a previous module, why bringing it in again?

    1) map too white and small with nothing really interesting...ice wind dale used to be interesting
    2) monsters too easy
    3) stronghold too empty

A question, is the Fanghorn Island unlock going to be account wide like the Epic Demogorgon unlock was? Because that was an amazing thing to have as a person with multiple playable alts. I will rush through the whole campaign on my main character, and maybe 1 other, but i am not going to run it on 7 different classes all at the same time, that would be suicide. But i would like the ability to run the new dungeon on different classes without having to go through the whole grind first just so that i can have some play variety as i farm Fanghorn Island

Bug: No Ten Towns Supplies from daily quests
I've completed 5 dailies in the first zone (2 yesterday and 3 today). I'm not receiving Ten Towns Supplies as a reward, so campaign progress is impossible.

Bug: Monsters and players fall under the map

During encounters monsters are often under the map, sometimes the same with players after relog.

    Siege Towers
What is the purpose of the siege towers? Those wouldn't be used for castle defense. Perhaps replace with towers (archers towers, sorcerers' towers, whatever).,/font>

    Ice Shards
The ice shard next to the main gate (1181,2238) would have blown out that wall.. perhaps re-angle it, or remove it.

    Epicenter Cutscene
"The worst of the storm has *past*." Should be "passed".

    Invisible Frost Giant?
(736, 2475) - "I'll cleave you in two!" but no giant (other than a frozen one).

    The Gathering Storm
Banner at (1446,2295) (while on top of the battlements) going through wall of the turret.

There is no coccoon, that I saw.

Block off the steps back to the wall after the cocoon is found. Since the rest of the map is devoid of people, it creates a great deal of inconsistency.

    Hunting the Yeti
Unable to interact with the knucklehead at (376,1017) to complete the Abominable Yeti quest. However, the yeti just.. appeared ..after a couple minutes.

    General Thoughts

I have to agree that the washed out/overly bright ambiance is a bit much.
Lots of stuff to kill, but it's all quite simple. The !EF! is having little effect on my 3.5k ilvl GWF, which is nice, but so far this zone doesn't feel any more difficult than IWD, and it really should be.
I have no real need or desire for the new armor, so what other motivation/rewards could be put into place?
Instead of Rank 5 enchants dropping, please make them R6 or R7.

    Thanks!

    Near-death Visual

I personally dislike the new near-death visual. The tunnel vision thing a cool effect in it's own right - perhaps a really good visual to use in another way, but I really prefer the red bloody style we have currently. It's a much more effective way to make you realize you're getting your backside handed to you than a visual that really feels a little more like being drunk than being beaten to death...

Travel at the border of zone
I LOVE the way this zone doesn't have clear bounding around it like we're in a bit bowl. Instead, the Travel option pops up when you're at an edge. That is a great idea - very cool - give a free cup of coffee to whoever came up with that idea!

    Point of contention... Xuna's clothes
So, a chick that fights with knives is hot. Seriously. But seems to me, for this mod, she should probably be wearing a coat since, you know... barely any clothes out in a magical snowstorm would chill even her hotness. Just sayin'

Nevermind on this one! She just forgot to bring a coat when we showed up, I see she picked up some more appropriate clothes. :)

    Eye of the storm perhaps?
A couple times, when I've facing away from the wind, the snow is blowing. When I look the other way, no snow. <-- snow. No snow --> weird! I'll install some vidcap software that works better than JING and see if I can capture the effect. I'm running the game in max video settings using an nVidia Quatro K5100M with current drivers

    Wulfgar's Entrance
I know who Wulfgar is because I've read a few (3 maybe?) of the novels and because he was mentioned in some blog posts. His entrance was pretty great - even if I had basically killed the Yeti in 3 hits already, the cut-scene still implied he saved my bootay from #2. Very nicely done. But then... he just sort of sticks around. I'm a supabad adventurer that has saved the world, what, 9 times in the last 3 years? Seems to me, if some long-hard hippy I've never met jumps over a wall, hollars at a yeti that I have to kill myself anyway... I wouldn't be overly inclined to let the guy tag along. I mean, who knows where he's been? I'd love to see a little more context here than just - hey, so, whasup dude, lets see what's going, eh?

    Healing Warmth Boon Description
The Healing Warmth boon description reads: "Your healing spells have a chance to up to 5 enemies near the target for up to 4000 damage" -- I assume the missing word is "damage" but maybe not?

    Frozen Reflection boon
Will there be an ICD on this boon effect? If not, expect to see Deflect builds become quite devastating (and therefore popular). Causing 5000 damage on EVERY deflect, especially when some builds can seriously crank up their Deflection chance, might be a bit over powered. Also - will this damage be influence by character stats or trigger crits that then trigger other powers?

    Bug: Falling deals everfrost damage.
[1:30] [Combat (Self)] You lose 3547 Physical Damage from falling.
[1:30] [Combat (Self)] Your Everfrost deals 1774 Everfrost Damage to you.

Both of these were dealt to me from a minor fall. In case it matters, I jumped off the ledge of a siege tower, which by the way is both facing the wrong way, and is much too small to be used on the walls of Bryn Shander.

    Ice Shards
The ice shard next to the main gate (1181,2238) would have blown out that wall.. perhaps re-angle it, or remove it.

I agree with this. If the ice shard was indeed hurled at this wall, this is not the realistic outcome of such an event.
The same goes for the rather massive chunk of ice on top of the tower.

Bug confirmed, + after you relog in that place u fall under map.

    Update::
Reccomendation/possible area for glich/bug abusing. In area In picture I stand on cliff near Heroic encounter, and if u stand on that iceberg u can hit monsters, while they will not respond..
Reoccomendation relocate either iceberg or Heroic encounter...

So far we've been able to do a few days worth of dailies, most of which are entirely unfinished and not giving the proper rewards. We cannot even acquire enough campaign currency to complete the first campaign task. It is impossible to give feedback on content that does not exist.

When will there be enough of the content for this module for us to effectively test it?
Will this new content be released soon enough for us to adequately test it and give you the feedback you seem to be so interested in before it goes live full of bugs? (i.e. Mod 6, 7, 8 and 9)

I'm sure you can understand that we have almost no trust in you whatsoever, but we do have a tiny bit of hope left. Please don't take that for granted. You just might be able to win back some of the trust.

I took the task "Secrets of Ostorian Relics" in the campaign. From the description, it doesn't help as to what it actually does. All it says is that it unlocks Great Power. I'm hoping that it improves the relics found thru-out the areas.

  • valwrynvalwryn Member, NW M9 Playtest Posts: 1,620 Arc User
My first character has enough Reputation to select the tasks on the Lonelywood Tier on the SK Campaign. Now it seems everything on the first Bryn Shander tier needs to be completed first. At the pace of 9 reputataion and 10 Ten Town Supplies a day, it's gonna take someone who ignores upgradin the boons almost 2 months to unlock Fangbreaker island. One would have enough Reputaion in 28 days for Fangy Island but not the Supplies needed. :(

Is there gonna be a weekly quest to help with this big offset.?

Here's something that's been bugging me since the Sword Coast Chronicle came out...the campaigns are in a confusing order. For this release, why does it appear that the Storm King's Thunder campaign is lower (in level/order/difficulty/whatever it's supposed to represent) than Icewind Dale? I'm talking about the initial campaign window. It's very confusing to newer players on live already. I talk to new folks and they are running around dying in well of dragons before they ever go to dread ring because Well of dragons is "lower" on the campaign window. Or they try to do the maze engine chapters before the Dwarven King quests or elemental evil.

can we please move these around to a more sensible order?

Thanks for the feedback. There is a text change coming to clarify this task. It is intended to unlock the Archaeologist's Trowel in the campaign store. This improves results when mining for Ostorian relics.

There have been several issues with the daily and weekly rewards which have hampered testing the campaign, as people have pointed out. Apologies for the delay in getting these right.

There is a weekly quest, and it should reward you with 15 Reputation and 50 Supplies. Hopefully you should now be accumulating all the currencies at the proper rates. Once again, I'm sorry this was missed earlier.

@ontheriver would it be possible to make Voninblod or relics or supplies or something from the SKT campaign that you can donate to the stronghold so that that SKT can also contribute to the guild in some way? Maze engine has a small way (5 days worth of quests for a meager 10 conq or dungeoneering shards) but something more significant would be really nice. perhaps make the supplies something that can be donated as one of the 4 campaign currencies?

And currently on preview the daily quests in Bryn Shander are still rewarding 1 voninblod each
