    Another direct hit with Patrolman!

Swashy alternates look really good, too. Though I admit that for a few paragraphs I thought you were going to neglect chandelier-swinging in the Olde England backstory. Excellent work as usual.

TY @jonesing4 , you get time off for good behaviour with that post.

Perhaps I made up all that Olde England backstory with the sole purpose of adding a chandelier swing ;)

BTW, have you got a costumes thread yet? Because you should, I like the cut of your costume jib.

looks a bit more like a robocop version of ironman to me

Heh, I meant that he's "kinda like a mash-up of Judge Dredd and the Punisher" in theme and concept.

Like Judge Dredd, he’s the super-cop with a zero-tolerance policy on crime. Commit a crime like burglary or robbery? You can expect a beating and humiliation and the items returned to the owner. Commit a crime worthy of the death penalty? He’ll gun you down right there. He also has a couple of jail cells built into his underground hideout for those he deems worthy of his own brand of rehabilitation. This is his prerogative as the self-appointed ultimate law enforcer with the jury and executioner parts added for good measure.

The Punisher part comes in because of the Patrolman’s vigilante and loner status (he’s not part of a wider law enforcement agency) and the fact that he uses contemporary arms and equipment in a more contemporary setting. He also subscribes to the Punisher’s attitude that in certain extreme situations the law is inadequate. In order to shame its inadequacy it is necessary to act outside the law. To pursue "natural justice" which, in his mind, is a natural extension to the law.

If you see a bit of a contradiction in the Patrolman’s stance on the law and law-breaking/enforcement then you spotted well. This contradiction also exists in his damaged psyche.

Concerning the Iron Man looking mask, well what can I tell you? I needed an emotionless, faceless piece that could also double as a protective face plate to get the visual concept right and I was also determined to use the Police Hat. I originally intended to use the hockey mask until I found out that it was a Headwear Accessory and couldn’t be used with the Police Hat. I tried many other options but eventually the 90s Face Plate suited my purposes.

Unfortunately, almost any costume that uses the Iron Man looking 90s Face Plate will evoke the visuals of Iron Man. I do have an alt costume on him that uses a full mask option (which is actually under the face plate on the costume I posted) and it turned out well but I prefer the one I posted. I’ll post the other one at a later period.

Iron Man+Robocop=pretty cool though. Thanks! :)

High praise coming from you, thanks! I've been thinking about trying to do a "one a day" kind of thing, just to make myself actually take pictures of my characters while I'm in game. The first 130 days would be pretty easy, that way. Thanks for the nudge, and keep yours coming.

The first alt costume I do on a new toon is usually either Golden Age or a Pulp Mystery-Man style. Here's my Pulp mystery-man version of Patrolman. I love the lighting in Vibora Bay, it's great for night-time screenshots and makes a good substitute for Hudson City...

    image

...once I get my hands on the new Tin Stars pieces I'll probably use one of those and get rid of the shield chest emblem (although I have to admit, it's growing on me now).

If I can offer any advice on what image sharing site to use to post images it would be this: Stay the hell away from Photobucket!

After a couple of years of frustratingly using this buggy site it seems I can no longer log into it!

Luckily I saved all the images I uploaded to Photobucket on my computer so I haven't lost them. I've decided to give Imgur a try and have started the process of uploading my cache of images to it. I'll have to go through this thread and repost my images from Imgur instead of Photobucket.

I'll give it a little test now with this addition to the Patrolman. I was never really that bothered with getting the Vintage Toy Costume Set but the price of it had dropped so much on the AH that I thought I'd just buy it to see. I discovered that it has some brilliant pieces that can simulate emergency services lights so I added the boots to the Patrolman's Modern "Riot Control" costume...

Oh, you Brits with your silly siren noises. ;)

Patrolman looks even better than before, I think. Not only do the added emergency lights help really sell the theme, I think the shape of those boots just fits better. The tops of the boots still have a vaguely shield-shaped cuff (the main benefit of the old Cyber Cowboy boots on the first version, to me), and they have a little more natural fold or wrinkle in the foot that makes them look more like a military or police issue item.

The more I look at this costume, the more convinced I am that the Cyber Cowboy belt couldn't possibly be used in a better way. It's perfect, great job designing such a good look (and character) around it.

Thanks man, apart from the lights on them I was a bit unsure of those boots at first as they are oversized by default. After a bit of scaling adjustments tho' I do prefer them :)

Bit of a shame we can't have two different coloured lights on each individual boot but we can't have everything I suppose.

So I bumped into a fellow costume fanatic in-game today (@ultrony, sorry mate but I don't have your forum name) who asked me if I was gonna update this thread soon. TBH it takes a bit of motivation sometimes to get the screenshots done and put into a viewable form, but my short chat with them gave me some motivation =)

I'm in the process of getting screenies for updates to existing toons and will add them soon, but in the meantime here's a new character.

With Iron Fist released on Netflix and all the hype surrounding it at the time I went back and read a lot of comic-books featuring him. I've always liked the character and have wanted to make a superhero martial-artist for a long time. I also took a shot a while back at revamping Green Dragon's costume for a CC so I used that as a basis for this new character.

    Here's Dragon Mask...

    image
    image

His background is a long journey of enlightenment that I started writing then realised that it would take a long time to get it all down. Basically he was sent by his monastery to deliver the Sacred Dragon Scrolls (on his waist) to the chosen one, only to discover down the line, after much denial on his part, that he was the chosen one. At that point he opened the scrolls and found a quotation from Buddha written in the hand of his venerable old teacher...

“Whatever precious jewel there is in the heavenly worlds, there is nothing comparable to one who is Awakened.”

I have to also agree Patrolman is pretty great. I always like red and blue lights on emergency personnel type characters. But I have to say Dragon Mask is my new favorite, particularly the use of those green and orange hues. Wish I knew about a cc revamping in game costumes, I'd be all over that.

TY mate, I'm loving the emergency lights on Patrolman too and I appreciate the vote of confidence on Dragon Mask :)

CCs with categories about revamping CO NPCs and factions are usually pretty good. Results are often better than the actual in-game official costumes.

I was wondering, MG, how you go about choosing tights to go with your heroes? We have a pretty wide selection, from actual tights patterns to special tights like holoforce or clockwork or alien hybrid. How do you settle on the right one?

I mostly ask because I have a speedster concept I want to do but am indecisive on the tights.

Well, first of all I decide what type of material they're using. I don't mean the material choices in the CO tailor but the actual material they would use or could get their hands on. For example, Swashbuckler's leg tights are just cotton with a little spandex in them (pretty much just rl thick tights) so I thought that the look of the silver age tights would suit that.

In contrast, Owl Woman actually wears flexible, lightweight armour so the combination of the 90s Foxbat tights on top and the nighthawk tights on the bottom convey that concept.

Britannia is an archetypal silver age superhero who has a certain degree of natural invulnerability so I just went the typical tights route with her......... it was also important for me to display the colours of her adopted country with her slightly abstract Union Jack costume. For that I needed a simple canvass with no ingrained pattern to it.

I like to stick to theme so, for me, it all depends on the concept/theme of your speedster, mate.

So more Photobucket shenanigans have happened. I finally managed to get back into my account there recently and everything was going fine until a few days ago when Photobucket decided that they would no longer offer third party hosting free anymore and that to link your images onto other sites (like the CO forums) you will have to pay for a $400 yearly subscription.

I'd already started to move my images to an Imgur account but hadn't managed to relink my images on the CO forums yet and logged in to find all my photobucket links not working. You see they gave no warning for this and just quietly implemented the changes.

Anyway, I've finally got all my images on my Imgur account now and I'm busy changing my links in these forums. However, in trying to edit my posts here with these new links, two of my posts in this thread just went *Poof!*

One was of my toon Federal Express. Like many of my heroes he's a legacy hero. After getting the waist bags I saw how they could be put to use by a courier like speedster. As well as a Superhero he also has a valued contract with the government delivering highly classified documents and dispatches. And like my other US patriotic toon, Homelander, he gains his powers from The Force of July (it is to US patriotic toons what the Speed Force is to DC speedsters).........

    image

His Grandfather , Frontrunner, was also a speedster superhero during the Golden Age. He used to deliver dispatches in WWII and saw a lot of action on the battlefield.....

Frontrunner was also a legacy hero of sorts, his father wasn't a superhero, but he was an ace pilot in the US Army Air Service during WWI....

They definitely need to add in bi-plane vehicles!!

Courage is doing what is right even when it isn't popular or safe. Honor is retaining the dignity and virtue in one's self, so it can light the way for others in the darkest of times. Compassion is showing patience and mercy towards others, even when it isn't returned or deserved. A hero is defined by these 3 words, they set him apart from others as a beacon of hope and excellence.

A couple of updates this time.

I applied the Fisticuffs Aura (big hands) to Rebound and took the opportunity to completely redo his tights costume and changed his hair to the rocker hairstyle which compliments his extended sliders....

I also added the Futuristic Shoulders to the Time Tyrant. I really like those pieces...

The other post that went *Poof!* when I tried to update it to change links was that of one of my oldest toons, Swashbuckler. I have some alt costumes for him earlier in this thread but I'm gonna do a new post now for the one that went missing, showcasing his classic superhero costume.

I've always had a fondness for old films in which actors such as Errol Flynn, Douglas Fairbanks, and his son Douglas Fairbanks Jr. would portay swashbuckling rogues and heroes with their feats of derring-do. I've also always liked playing swashbuckling types in tabletop RPGs, whatever the genre. It was inevitable that I would create such a character in CO and I didn't have to go far to find his name....

Hudson Wallace was a movie stunt man who wanted to be a star, craving both the thrills of his own work and the acclaim afforded the actual actors. Hearing of the debut and early adventures of The Black Owl and The Minuteman, Wallace hit upon a plan: he would invent a costumed identity for himself, pit his own skills against criminals and at the height of his popularity reveal himself, thereby riding the wave of publicity to starring roles instead of stunt work.

Thus was born THE SENSATIONAL SWASHBUCKLER, whose light-hearted attitude and cavalier, movie-hero style captured the hearts of romantic Milleniumites. Wallace originally considered his crime fighting career a lark, an extended publicity stunt. But as time goes by, he finds himself loving it more for its own sake. He has become addicted to the rush of life-and-death situations, and satisfied by the acclaim given a real-life hero that no mere movie star could ever win.

    image

Swashbuckler is first and foremost an entertainer, taking his cues from old swashbuckling adventure movies. He plays to the crowds and basks in the attention and public acclaim. He loves drama and always does everything in the most stylish manner possible. He is an adrenaline junkie, craving the rush and excitement of crime fighting.

To aid him in his crusade Swashbuckler has hi-tech, ultra-light chainmail sewn into the lining of his tunic and his guns are cunningly disguised as vintage flintock pistols. The swords he uses are, however, genuine and date back to the English civil war.

    image

I have two classic superhero costumes for Swashbuckler with a couple of subtle differences between them...

Since purchasing the Amazon Set the other day I've been trying to update Britannia's costume to get it to where I've always wanted it to be. It's not an easy task combining a Silver-Age look superhero costume with antique armor while keeping the core concept intact but I like what I have so far...

    1.) the clap

2.) because MG designs from real life. For instance, buy a red shirt. Is it ruby red? Maybe...is it the color of a crayon? Is it so bright that it burns your eyes? Wear that bright shirt...go work in it and get it dirty and wash it over and over and over.

Now what color is it? Design from what you know. Don’t be afraid to use more than one color and don’t be afraid to use the dull shades. And remember...accessories don’t have to be the same color as everything else.

Heya @zombiehunter1968 , thanks for giving me the kick up the arse that I need to update my thread here. I'm been playing a lot less recently due to three main things: being overworked, playing a lot more PnP RPGs and (admittedly my own opinion) there being a real lack of decent new costume sets to interest and inspire me to create new toons and costumes.

    and-
2: Explain how your colour schemes look so modern and realistic, and downright cool!

Well thanks very much mate :) Colour scheme-wise, Ratty makes a good observation there. I tend to try and match colours from clothes I have or see in real life. I am a lurker in the bottom half of the colour chart with occasional raids into the upper territories

Also, as I've mentioned in another post somewhere here in this thread, there are certain comics of my childhood that I have always taken inspiration from with colours........

The new masks are a great addition to our costumes, I really love that set and I hope that there are more in the pipeline.

This time I used the Mask Edged to make a change to my Pulp Noir Mystery-Man Leatherwing......

“I needed a drink, I needed a lot of life insurance, I needed a vacation, I needed a home in the country. What I had was a coat, a hat, a mask and a gun. I put them on and went out into the rain soaked, murderous streets of Vibora”

    image

I also used it in combination with the Cover face pattern to improve my Golden Age Leatherwing (as well as some other minor improvements to this version...

    image

Thought I'd give some screenshots a go without the comic outline, for a change. Not sure if I like it without though, I think I prefer the definition that comic outlining gives.

I'd still give my right nut for a version of Cape Glide without the cape *sigh*

I was really happy to see the Buccaneer set, I knew it would allow me to get Swashbuckler nearer to where I would ideally like him to be. I'm so happy with it that I made 3 variations of his costume adding a couple of pieces from the set.....

    Much cooler!

    I like the hair combo.
  • His name is Swashbuckler.

    You keeled his father.

    Prepare to die.

Because I like making you work...

You should make an evolution of character designs page.

Like what the first rendition of Britannia was and Swash.

I was actually searching the thread to see what changes you made to Swash

    Brilliant color composition.

Huntsman is my archer and homage to Green Arrow. A badass normal with a bow and fancy gadget arrows. For his main (Silver Age) outfit I just wanted to create your archetypal superhero archer, but I managed to get the main part of his outfit to have an arrow shape. I hope you can see it, the skirt represents the fletching going up to the Nighthawk hood which is the arrow-head (easier to see on the tailor screenshots at the bottom of this post).

The following are his Silver Age outfit, his Modern Age outfit and his Bronze Age (X-treme 90s guitar riff!) outfit complete with Bowgun...

I wish we didn't have the stupid glowing string with bows. I heard a rumour that they were just supposed to be on the "laser bow" but that the implementation of that glitched all of them, dunno if it's true but it sounds plausable enough :/

Love love love love love that arm cannon bow combo that is amazing! I've always had a problem with the, "How do I not run out of arrows?" but this here my friend is priceless.

TY mate, glad you like it. I made new screenies for him recently that you might appreciate, with two different Bowgun attachments....

  • A gatling bow, that's awesome. :+1:

How are you so good at face sliders?

Simply practice, young Jeb. Practice. And don't forget that you can get quite a number of different looks when you take into account mood, pattern, detail and diffuse as well as the actual sliders

There were a couple of decent new costumes in the Nighthawk store, I really like the Victory Cape and hope they bring out more versions of that with different cape attachments. On picking it up I just had to make a homage to the Dark Knight.

    Here's Night Shrike...

The costume transformations are also another nice little addition to add flavour to our characters. The flight one makes for some cool screenshots...

Thanks :) I kinda lucked out when they brought out the Amazon set and the Malvan Lion Shield as they totally go with her theme. I'm crossing my fingers for more Malvan Lion stuff to replace the Spartan Lion stuff she's using atm.
