Tutorial: Hijab

bobsy26bobsy26 Posts: 212 Arc User
The hijab is a common Islamic garment for women designed to cover the head and neck, leaving the face exposed. It is often referred to as a headscarf, as it differs from full-body or face garments such as the niqab or burqa. It should be noted that there are many styles and fashions for the hijab, and there is no single way to wear them. As such there is considerable leeway in how you design your hijab-wearing Champion, and this short tutorial is only intended as a guide.

(Full disclosure - I am not muslim, and have never actually worn a hijab in real life. Forgive me for any inaccuracies or assumptions on my part)

You will need:
Free slots in headgear, neck and back. That's about it!

Step 1: Headgear

The first, and most obvious step is the headscarf part itself. For this simply select the head category HOODS and from there select FITTED HOOD under headwear. The colour you pick here can be pretty much anything you like. I've gone with a dark grey as it separates the hijab from the rest of Moonblade's outfit, but it's really a matter of personal preference.

Step 2: Neck

The problem with the hood is that it leaves the neck exposed, where most hijab styles cover it up. To counter this, we need to use neck wear to cover as much of the neck as possible. To do this, select the body category, then neck, then COWL TIGHT. You can also use GOLDEN AGE COWL if you have the set, but the difference is minimal in this case, and the former is freely available. As this is part of the same garment, it should be the same colour as the 'hood'.

Step 3: Back

Next we need a bit more cloth around the neck. As we've already used the neck slot (and there's little of any use in the collar slot) we need to be creative here and actually use the back slot in the body category. Select WRAPPED SCARF, and make sure the first two colours are set to the same as the hood and neck, so it all matches up.

And that's a hijab! All done! No problems at all, right...?

This is a matter of opinion but I don't like the dangling scarf bit. You may be fine with it, but in case you're not, there's a sneaky fix to get rid of it.

Step 4: Finishing Touches

How do you do it? Oddly enough, by changing the body category to JACKETS. For some reason the wrapped scarf piece doesn't work properly with jackets, and the 'cape' part (the flappy bit) disappears the rest remains where it is. You do have a sort of jagged bit on the back where the flappy bit would attach, but it's easily ignored - in my opinion at least.

And there's the finished outfit for Moonblade! A pretty fine hijab, able to be worn with a variety of outfits.

There are, of course, lots of variations you can make here, but most come with some sort of trade-off. For instance, Moonblade's hero costume actually uses the MAGICAL GIRL neck instead of all the business with the wrapped scarf piece. It looks great, but of course leaves her neck exposed, which is somewhat embarrassing.

Like I say, personal taste.

    Looks awesome!

Now if they would only fix the female torso so we could use the cowls again.

For my next tutorial: the sikh turban:

Step one: just... uh... select the turban I guess.

A similar look is the Niqab, using the archer hood (with mask) instead of the fitted hood. Alternatively keeping the fitted hood look, you could use a plain full mask and apply the rounded eye mask over the top in skin color (sort of looks like a hood with balaclava under it) but would work as a Niqab also with your extra scarf additions.
  • Pretty awesome all things considered! :) I have one Muslim character in the works, though, but I'm currently a bit indecisive if she will wear a headscarf or not. Still, I will definitely keep this in mind when I create her civil clothes. Kudos!

Quick update: due to the recent changes to the costume editor, you can now remove the scarf tail without needing to have a jacket on at the same time, so that's a bit more freeing!
