Ive downloaded the launcher here and tryed to use it without doing the other steps. And guess what ?I just clicked on it and the game started working just fine..
I think simply lending launchers will not solve the problem, because the launchers remembers where you installed the client. I installed a new copy of the game on a different folder and then copied the launcher and deleted the rest. When I ran the launcher, it ran a patch of 4 GB because it can't find the directory where I installed the game.
You must follow the troubleshooting steps they have provided to the letter. Simply sharing the launcher will not work. Anyway, I'll still link it here just in case.
Simply copying the launcher "Champions Online.exe" does work. Already confirmed on at least two installs. And no, the source of the launcher doesn't have to be from one with the same install directory.
Additionally, if you have done a reinstall, all you need to do is hit "Cancel" once it starts to PATCH. Then, close the launcher and copy the following directories (assuming you made a backup of the original install) to the new install: /piggs and /prepatch
This way, you won't need to re-download the game again (it would've been sooo easy for the devs to just release a new updated download package or just the launcher... but nooo).
Anyway, at least we have the CO Community to fall back on. Cheers and see you in MC!
I installed the launcher and it's still not working for me. I don't even get an error message, the client closes and loads as if preparing to start the game but nothing happens. Get your fingers out your bums, devs.
Only issue I have with using the launcher posted earlier is that the game is no longer linked through Steam.
Will this affect my achievements? Would be nice to keep a track of how many hours i've played the game too, with MMORPG's I usually give myself a set limit of 100 hours so it doesn't eat my life up
I am also afflicted with the "The patchclient got a message while it was in a state with no response function." Error. I don't have this game through steam and i'm a lifetime sub. Been having this issue since last night (9-16-11)
So, lets recap... five days since the first report of a serious issue.
No development house response, not even an acknowledgement.
No solution.
Do we perhaps have another explanation as to why, despite some serious franchises and a huge amount of community investment, Cryptic MMOs still tend to be near the bottom of lists of MMO popularity and population?
Bitterness aside, please Cryptic devs, lemme get back into the game and give you some more money, ok? Alternatively, please return the money I've already spent and let me go elsewhere?
For those who, like me, play through steam... simply deleting the 'champions online.exe' and telling steam to 'Verify Integrity of the Game Cache' forces it to redownload the working one.
Noticed that there are folks who still have problems getting into the game (past the launcher).
I'm surprised that the Devs haven't dealt with the issue sooner but that may have been because it happened over the weekend. Still, after a patch, things like this should be accounted for.
Anyway, from what I can tell, the main change they've made to the launcher is to use a Secure Server for the user account authentication process. This will require an SSL connection to the account server where the old system didn't do so (which leads me to believe caused the server to ignore the request thus making the launcher crash/fail).
Just wanted to share my findings. Hopefully some of you tech-savvy types could trace the problem (firewall? antivirus?) and come up with the solution.
I assume that the devs don't care, but I, too, am having this issue. "The patchclient got a message while it was in a state with no response function." ... What the heck does that mean?

For as many replies/views this thread has there really should be a some response. Or at least some confirmation that the issue is noticed and (hopefully) being fixed.
UPDATE: It is now Wednesday, September 21st, more than a week since this thread was started, and this issue has not been resolved or even acknowledged yet.
You pulling in a paycheck, Devs? I'm about one more week from calling up billing and demanding my lifetime subscription money back. This negligence of your paying customers is borderline offensive.
So, tried for a good 14 hours to fix it (Using Steam Version), including deleting the exe., then verifying via Steam and reinstalling the ENTIRE game.
This is just too damn ridiculous. I only get to play on weekends for now and last weekend, I have zero problems at all. One week later, the launcher can't even start up due to a problem connecting to the patch server? No one touches my computer too so it's definitely not a problem on my side.
I'm also surprised to hear that it has been days since the problem has surfaced and still no actual reply at all from Cryptic? Stop thinking consumers can be fended off with just "Let's ignore and they will forget about it.". What consumers really want is just an explanation and a proper accounting for by Cryptic. My subscription is still on and the fact that I CAN'T PLAY, is actually a breach on Cryptic's side. Don't make me demand my money back.
Like everyone here, I too cant start up the launcher and cant even access the CO website. I'm able to access the website and start up the launcher only when I activate a program called Hotspot Shield. Not sure if any of you heard of this program. Cause I only used it for some of my other MMO games but never for CO. This is only a quick fix for me and really hope for the CO Dev team to fix this.
Same troubles here. I am accessing the forums through a proxy since I have lost all other connectivity to anything Cryptic (CO, Cryptic main site, STO, etc..).
Using the proxy bypasses this, and the hotspot shield mentioned does too. I can't see Cryptic having blocked the rest of the world on purpose, but it is looking more and more like that is what is happening for many.
But i would be nice to hear something from the Tech or Game support on this matter...
Stepp 1, rename your old launcher, for example "Champions Online.old".
Stepp 2, download the new launcher, and copy it into your CO file.
Stepp 3, start it, and hopefully be able to patch and play CO again.
Now i only have to find a new launcher for STO as well...
I don't think this is simply a launcher problem for those of us around the world who cannot access anything Cryptic. I have tried the launcher fix and it gives the same errors.
On another board I read this by Zacktroyer:
As far as I know, this is an issue related to your IP locations, generally this issue happens to the ones in different regions other than the US. My IP address is from Vietnam and recently I am having the same problem as you guys. I tried to use programs that change my IP or manage my proxy and it works fine. Now I still can access to CO main website using these method but still I can't get the launcher to work. I think Cryptic has changed some options in their systems.
If this helps here is the error listed in the ERRORS.log
110926 08:10:50 1 [1]: devassert: link->connected; NetLink must be connected before data can be sent
110926 08:10:50 2 [1]: Launcher PCL Error The connection was idle for too long
I've had this error for the better part of this afternoon. I found a way around it.
I went to "C:\Program Files\Cryptic Studios\Champions Online\Live"
And ran GameClient.exe
The game started up.
I know it doesn't solve the problem, but it's a way around it.
That is, if it works for anyone else.
Good luck!
Did you try logging in? For a lot of these launcher issues, while that allows the game to run, it still won't connect to the account server and let you log in
Guess the launcher issue is back again. I've tried going back to an old launcher EXE I had archived but same problem persisted. Firewall log is clear so nothing is blocking the connectivity... nettest confirms that all ports (game/web) are reachable.
Any news on fixes for this?
PS: running GameClient.exe does not work (it's like the app doesn't know how to connect to the Account servers without the Launcher providing some information to it).
PS2: I noticed that there was a patch today (looked at the "Release Notes" page and it was dated today/later) but it didn't list the launcher (though never does). Hopefully the fix is coming... I'd hate to leave CO at such a sour note.

Wellcome to the "... you are not cool enough to be allowed to logg into CO with your old launcher..." group, grab a seat, have a coffee, and let us wait untill we might get some answers about it...
Guess we have to wait untill someone with a working launcher upload it, and we download it...
Seems to be the same issue that we encountered during the last launcher problem.
From what I can tell, it has something to do with the IE interface they're using as the launcher. Like the solution before, I hope someone can upload a working launcher EXE somewhere we can grab off.
As it is, I'm currently downloading the installer again... all 2.6G of it... yeesh. It's annoying that Cryptic doesn't have a link to the Launcher EXE alone considering all the issues a lot of folks seem to be having.
Just aborted my d/l because I realized that I was getting the same file(s) I was grabbing when I first got the game back in July (BT FC.20.20110627.3). Good grief. How hard is it to create a new package for new content?!?
Anyway, that's another issue for another topic. As it stands, I'm out of ideas. Guess that's it for my adventures in CO.... at least for now.
Still missing a full week from the last 30 days gtc, but that is an other story...
And i have an other 30 days unused key...
I guess, i can watch the time expire over my browser instead of having fun ingame...
Edit:
The link is working, i can see the "launcher", but there is a note "The launcher is designed to be viewed in Internet Explorer!"... btw. thanks for the last upload from the launcher.
Yeah, I think that Launcher page/URL is what the Cryptic Launcher uses to display the login screen. During installation, I'm guessing that it adds a descriptor to tell IE which app to launch (in this case, most likely GameClient.exe).
I'm guessing that the scripts they're using require new IE-specific stuff that my machine does not have (I have removed all traces of the launchable IE browser and have no intention of updating that piece of cr@p).
For those of you who do use IE (I pity you), I would recommend doing an update to their latest version. That might fix any launcher issues you're getting.

I just downloaded this and opened it, it immediately worked.
Thankyou.

If they aren't counting i'm screwed

Going into the champions online directory, I found two files "Champions Online.exe" and "Champions Online.exe.delete.me"
I deleted the .exe file, and then renamed the .delete.me file to Champions Online.exe
After this, the launcher worked fine....

I tried http://www.mediafire.com/?i6952i95dc67w3r and it is patching... thanks @ IrregularHunterX for putting it up.
Lets hope that i can log in and play again.

Btw. it is really sad, that there is still no response from the Tech team here, is there any support here left, or where are they hiding?
And why can not the Support provide us with a working launcher as download?!
Wonder what happens then?
This happened after the maintenence!...

do we have to get internet explorer and then load it or some s%#t ?
AND IF FOR SOME REASON I HAVE TO USE MOTHER F$%#ING IE I WILL NEVER PLAY THIS AGAIN!!!!!!
For what reason would they not just post a new launcher and tell people i do not know.......
who uses internet explorer anymore anyway?
