I updated the TIPS section with a few /bind scripts, one for a great heal set-up that we just worked out yesterday, another for a 4 cycle zoom and one authored by BrEggo (HERE, for binding /Startchatwith. If you guys find any binds that are helpful post a link here and I'll add it to the sticky so it will be easier to find.
I cannot for the life of me figure out how to get target to work. I've tried cutting and pasting the commands from the OP into my ent_keybinds.txt file. They are loading correctly but I'm getting an "Unknown Command" error message on the following commands (e.g.):
clientTarget_Prev
Target_Next
I've tried Target_Button_Prev but that says I'm missing to <int> arguments. Ditto on Target_Button_Modalcycle.
Do I need to be changing something in my control settings? Couldn't find anything in forums where people were have same problems. I feel I'm missing something obvious - but considering what a herculean effort it took to even get Vista to recognize the damn controller - I'm thinking nothing is TOO obvious.

No, you're correct those default commands aren't exact. Target_Button_Next ( 0 1 works with them )and the Prev versions just cycle forward and backward based on the Target_Button_SetModalCycle setting (ie. 0=Enemy, 1=Friend) while ModalCycle just advances (like Next). Unfortunately, you can't Toggle the setting so its only useful if used with a key/button press to modify the Next and Prev commands or 2 buttons to change the value by declaration instead of using the + prefix. if you want to restore to defaults just set default in controls since we can't actually see the defaults (make sure you save any binds if you want to keep them) to duplicate them.
I'm running 64bit Vista Home Premium - but using a wired controller - if your having issues you're probably using a wireless (that actually requires different steps and isn't automatic - wireless charging cables don't help either --from what I've heard--) because Vista has drivers for the wired xbox controller included and its plug and play supported (on 64bit or 32bit). There's another thread in this forum that goes into a great amount of detail about it. Most of the important info/links from it is duplicated in this one but not all.
Does anyone know how to break out of a root with the controller? I can't mash buttons to break out of the root because I can still attack, wiggling the stick doesn't seem to do much good either. So far the only solution is hitting Z on the keyboard which tends to be uncomfortable when using a controller.
Wiggling the left stick will help you wriggle out of roots. Any of your active attack buttons works as well. If you have white damage numbers streaming from your character, that's the break points that you are accruing on the hold that you are in.
The color of the numbers streaming from your character under different conditions mean different things:
Blue numbers= Power gained
Red numbers= Damage inflicted on you (of course)
Green numbers= Hitpoints healed
White numbers= Break points inflicted on a hold
Yellow numbers on critters= Damage inflicted on them (of course)
So if you find pressing a button or wiggling a stick stream s those white numbers faster, just keep repeating it.
EDIT: I just noticed you said "ROOT". In all the circumstances I have been rooted, the left stick has always worked for me in breaking out of it.
just wondering if any 1 has tried switchblade yet was thinking about buying it but thought i should see if any 1 els has already
I tried the trial version of SwitchbladePro. It would seem to be a feature rich version of XPadder or the other Keyboard/Joystick emulator that I have tried (sorry can't remember the name of it, it's not Joy2Key). The only feature that Switchblade has that others don't is the ability to text using nothing but the controller. But to charge $20.00 USD on an annual basis for the ability to text in game is overpriced. For $80.00 USD, you can buy a refurbished Logitech DiNovo Mini keyboard (from EBay) and have a keyboard you can use out of game as well.
I would like to see the text wheel that Switchblade uses integrated into CO barring copyright restrictions. If Cryptic still has plans of porting CO to the console, this method of text entry would seem worthwhile.
have ppl seen what the latest patch did to the controller?
it changed the start and select buttons to function differently.
start = champions sign in the minimap
back = the "i" that is next to the chat window
i do congratulate back now having a function, but the start is now problematic. The pvp glitch where the controller freezes up was always fix when i press start and then cancel it. since start now has a diff function, i cant do this anymore and so i just press esc. Is there another way to fix this issue quickly or can bind change fix it? if so wat steps would i need to do to change the start back to where it used to be?
I wasn't aware that they changed the default bind for "Start" since I have chnaged the binding to my targetting script.
Anyways, just bind the "Start" button to Gamemenu 1. That was the default bind for it bbefore the patch.
i did the copy paste of the text file in the first page, and the start worked properly again. The thing is i just gained more problems.
My target next (Rb), target clear (Rb + Lb) and toggle enemy/friendly (Rb + RT) arent working propely. It just keeps stating unknown command. I tried uninstalling the game and reinstalling but all it did was reset my ui and not my binds.
If someone can plz help me change i will gladly appriciate it. Im ingame as well so a message there can be a great help.
They did change the toggle binds for enemy/friendly such that the previous binds no longer worked. On my end I resolved this issue by binding the Rb to target_enemy_near and the "Select" button to target_friendly_next. You can probably bind Rb+Lb to target_enemy_next for enemy target cycling.
thx for the help, as this is very much appriciated.
i guess i could adjust that, but just to keep the buttons in the same order as b4 wouldnt it be better to target enemy next for Rb and Rb + Lb for target clear? (ill try this)
Another thing is my other chars that i didnt save this file for are in no way affected. They are actually better lol, since i just load the start game menu bind.
I wish I know what the enemy/friendly toggle is now since it has been changed. For now, I'll remove the reference on the default list so no one else messes up their binds.
If anyone knows what this toggle command is, please let us know.
::VOID::Well.. I plugged in my Controller. (It's a 360 Wireless controller with the charging cord kit) I installed the driver for Windows Vista 32, but when I go in game, the glowy green light around the guide button starts to flicker, and my controller doesn't do anything in game. When I close the game, the green light lights up on player 1.
Sorry, I'm new to this entire thing. Little help?::VOID::
::EDIT:: Okay so I made the Notepad ent_keybind.txt file, cuz I'm a retard and didn't. I went in game and typed "/bind_load". Now it doesn't flicker in game, but the controller itself just doesn't so anything. I'm such a newb. Halp!

I haven't played yet with a xbox controller, but I believe the USB cord for the wireless controller will NOT work for this. That will only charge your controller if I recall. You need either a wired controller or a wireless receiver for your PC.
With ur help and of a nice person i met in game i was able to fix my controller to the point where i can do almost everything.
the only thing i cant do is manual target. if u or someone else finds what manual targetting is now i will be very thankful. im still fidgetting trying to find it myself so i hope it can be found.

I don't know if anyone knows this but you can target enemies manually by pressing the RB shoulder pad...
To Target Enemies by default
Tap RB on the Xbox controller
- this will automatically follow yoru target priority just like if your hitting the tab key.
To Cancel/Reset targeting order
Hold LB and Tap RB (or vice versa)
-This will unselect your target and reset the targeting priority.
Now for the healers
To Target Friendlies
HOLD Right Trigger and Tap RB
-Now instead of targeting enemies you now target friendlies in the same manner.
To go back to targeting enemies.
Hold Right Trigger and Tap RB
-Your now Targeting enemies again.
Im not good at the whole binding thing but I found these by incident, it helps alot especially if your not really into the whole binding things. I just posted this cuz I seen a lot of people talking about targeting orders and binding keys and stuff. It's not pefect but this is what I use without the binding. I guess if you need a more technical situation then maybe this won't work. Hope this helps though. I may have questions later myself.
Forgive me if this is known im sure it is but some of this stuff is'nt readily available to most people in the game currently. Peace.
I have windows vista 32 bit and I've already installed the driver. Whenever I plug the controller into my computer its says that the device is installed and ready to use but it doesn't work. It only continues to control the xbox...
I've been using a 360 controller since launch, as I much prefer the ease of use over mouse/KB. The binds here might take me a bit of time to get used to, but they seem a lot more comprehensive and useful.
There is an error in the download file though on the LT+YB setup, which I had to fix. You might want to just check that.
On another note, anyone know how to increase the turn speed of the camera? The default is a little slow for my liking and I can't find any information on how to change it, dispite searching for a while.

Oh gawd THANK YOU!!!
I have a Celestial character and didn't know about these buttons except for just clicking RB to target enemies. So when it came to targetting myself or teammates for a heal, I actually had to take my hand off the controller and put it on the mouse. This will makes things so much more awesome - 1000 internets to you, good sir, for discovering and sharing!
PS Is there a way I can target OBJECTS using the default settings for the Xbox controller?
i'd like it if how RT and RB switches the targeting to friendlies if they added a similar feature to target liftable and destroyable objects it would make the controller interface even smoother since you wouldn't have to grab your mouse for any objects you had to destroy it would also make Telekinesis usable mid combat instead of having to take your hands off of the controller mid battle to try and pick something to huck at them with your mind.
Does anyone else use xpadder it works great for this game and any other game that doesn't have 360 controller support! I lhave my block set up for left joy stick click I love it there, works great! You can get xpadder from this link http://www.xpadder.com/ once you get use to it you'll love it!

Okay ,..... so this is why I couldn't select the Debris in the tutorial mission? No alternate fix for this?
Also, how do you select items (stun gun)? Says to use right d-pad, but that does nothing.
Well...all I got to say is thank you for putting this up.
I have been wanting to play Champions since before it came out...I was really hoping it would finally be released for the 360...sadly it never was...but I just got a new PC today that is good enough to run it, and this is thefirst application I opened up and tried out.
Well...the first after I installed my 360 controller.
I was delighted to see that the controller worked in the game, but was certainly confused as to what to do with it...this FAQ is a GODSEND.

If you untarget any active enemies then face toward objects you can target them that way. It's inefficient but it works.
As for devices, hold the Dpad RIGHT and press X,Y,B or A for slots 1 through 4 respectively. I am not aware of a method to use slot 5. You can select builds 1-4 by using Dpad DOWN in a similar manner, your three primary equipment if they're usable by holding LEFT and using X/Y/B (5th device could be A here).
To select destructible objects, you need to go into the Options, controls page. near the bottom is an option to 'never target objects' (or something close). Turn it off, and if you have no target selected, activating any non-energy builder attack should target and fire at objects.
This becomes a bit more than random in an area where there are other objects in close proximity or line of sight to the one you actually need to target.
Thanks.
Also, this is true but it can be mitigated by your auto-targeting options; I like near to far within camera center, which is (near to) far from perfect but seems to function mostly well for the purpose. It would be cool to have the camera raised a bit and a dot-sight so we can see what we're pointing at more easily.
Don't forget if you mess up on the binding somehow you can type /unbind_all and it will return everything back to normal even your Xbox Control buttons. Saved me a ton of trouble.
I remember COx days of 'You use a controller?! And you play on a big screen tv?!!!' My response is still "Duh"
Makes movement and looking around sooo simple. Its like playing in a movie. Auto face target helps. Mouse and keyboard mixed in to interact a little. Add a chat channel and it's pretty spoiled gaming.
Just tried using a controller today. Played since launch and was wondering what the block button was. Never would've thought it was both trigger buttons. Gotta say the game feels pretty different and somewhat new again because of it.

The only bind I change on the 360 controller is the Block.
To get this type
/bind Joy8 +powertrayexec 16
[This makes it so you can block with only the right trigger, as well as both triggers together.]
I am running champions online on my 2011 macbook pro through doh's STO wineskin. I am using tattieboggle's driver for os x 10.
When testing the controller in the driver window, everything appears to be fine.
Using controllermate:
When I am in-game, the controller doesn't function correctly. The only controls that are responsive are the d-pad for moving around and "x" for flying vertically.
I apologize if this has been answered, but when I searched for "map", well...
Is it possible to bind a single button (say Joypad_Left) so that it both opens AND closes the map?
I can get it to open the map with /map but it not close it- probably because the controller is now working in the Map window, not the main.
I also tried the bind "map $$ bind_load_file mapclose.txt" technique, but unfortunately everything I can think of to put in THAT txt is not working:
-Joypad_Left "map $$ bind_load_file mapopen.txt" did not work for the aforementioned reason.
-I also tried copying the binds from both Start and Select, since both of those buttons DO close the window.
I think I know the reason why it didn't work (none of the buttons except those already bound to the Map window seem to be doing ANYTHING), but here's hoping someone can figure out a way!
Having bought a lifetime account before the game launched, part of my purchase decision was based on the promise of gamepad support/. If I knew that what this would mean is XBox controller support, I probably wouldn't have bought CO. I absolutely LOATHE the XBox controller.
Completely fail to understand why you just don't import the commands from game controllers as passed on by Microsoft Windows. When calibrating a gamepad/joystick/whatever Windows certainly seems to have no problem discerning what button/slider has been pushed/activated.
Apparently for a Playstation style controller to work with your game I'll have to rely on a utility like Xpadder as some guy in a basement is able to accomplish what your entire team is unable to produce on the payroll.
Have you checked the box in the options menu marked "use joystick", the tooltip of which reads "use joystick or non-Xbox gamepad"?
E: Having checked this also causes a huge list of binds for standard windows gamepad buttons to appear, so you're welcome
E2:
Is it possible to bind a single button (say Joypad_Left) so that it both opens AND closes the map?
I don't know, but if it helps the buttons that are bound to opening the main menus (BACK and START are initially bound to these) will close most panels. I'm fairly sure this includes the map.
