I always saw the Excelsior as the UH-1 Huey of the Star Trek universe. The original design fills that niche so perfectly that Starfleet really doesn't see a need to develop a replacement. I'd just be happy with the interiors being scaled properly. Last I checked, even the Galaxy-class didn't have a bridge as roomy as St. Peters.

I'm picturing a patch that is supposed to fix this. The direction of warp is straight out, only the ship model still does a 180 and it warps out in reverse.

For full effect, you have to lean and jump around in your chair as your ship takes damage.
