Serious Lag Issue

SystemSystem Member, NoReporting Posts: 178,019 Arc User
First of all let me say that the devs have done an excellent job with STO. I have been playing this game since open beta and I LOVE PLAYING STO. But for almost 2 months I have had a serious problem with LAG. I can log in just fine and fly around in sector space just fine but when I get into any mission the game starts lagging. It is so bad the game is becomes unplayable. Now when I say unplayable I mean how can you play a game that when you enter a mission it runs fine for about 2min's then lags for 45sec's to a minute then clears up for 2-3min's then lags again, keeping this process up till I get mad and log or I fight through it till the end then log. The worst days are Sunday through thursday, which is most of the week.At first I just thought it was my router but today I had my router moved to right next to my desktop and plugged directly to it.
I STILL HAVE LAG making me believe now it isnt on my end.

I am running Windows 7 with a NVIDEA Geforce GT 120 all drivers updated.

    Go to this website:

    www.speakeasy.net/speedtest

I had a severe lag issue last night. I went to the site, and found I was only getting 1/10th the speed I was supposed to get out of my ISP. I rebooted my cable modem and router, and said "Oh, that's much better" (It was at full speed again :)). Who knows? You may have a lingering internet issue that requires a modem/router reboot to clear the errors in your signal.

It might just be your fps dropping real bad not exactly sure but u can download msi afterburner to check fps and gpu usage also you can type in /showfps 1 in game and see fps oh and just in case you dont know if your see fps in the 20s or lower that probably is your problem 30 and up you should be fine

ok offhand looking at your tracert and nettests I would thing yur internet connection loos good, but are are using a wireless and it still could be the router . some models have problems withthe burts of small packets the game use and the number of connections

and the game is pick on wireless connections

    what model is your router.

it also could be an intermitt connection drop as both vista and win7 will do network scan every 60 seconds that can cause lag and disonnect on some routers

if this is the case these option might help

    http://www.martin-majowski.de/wlanoptimizer/
    http://www.hardforum.com/showthread.php?t=1380507

also how current is your network adapter driver.

Thanks for the reply everybody, let me first say that on Monday my router was moved next to my desktop and is now my desktop is hooked directly to the router,no antenna anymore. In the past when I would get a little lag I would reset my router and it would clear it up but that doesnt help anymore which is why I had Verizon move it and hook it directly.
Zanchi thanks for the advice but knew that already lol.
Flato: Didnt know that so I will keep an eye on it and try to check it while playing.
PegasusMD: With it hooked directly now am I still concidered wireless? I never had this huge a problem before with the game lagging so much I dont think my running system is causing it or I would have had trouble right at launch.
Now keep in mind Im not that computer savvy so these are only my opinions so if im wrong plz tell me.
Oh and service from Verizon Fios
    Router model# MI424-WR

Okay so I did what Flato suggested and entered /showfps in game. WOW!!! when playing it says anywhere from 9-13 and when lagging its 1.5. Is this me?? How could it be me?? I have probably the best internet provider in Verizon Fios directly hooked to the computer. If it is me plz help me resolove this issue.

having a fps (frame rate speed) is indicaion of how many frames of graphics are being drawn per second. You want higher rate the better having a rate of 9-13 means your cpu/graphics card combination is unable to run the game at what most would consider an acceptable rate (above 30) . for the video setting you have set in the game.

you might want to try setting the launcher option to use safe mode.

this lowers the game setting to bare minium then with the /showfps on adjust the setting while you watch the fps until you have an good balence between rate and graphic looks.

it is alss possible your gpu may be overheating .

and yes with you connected directly you will not have the sireless problem but it is still possible the router/modem has problems handling the packet bursts but I think that is unlikely.

Yeah if your fps is that low it sounds like that might very well be your problem cryptic has updated some of the graphic options over time so that may be why your just seeing problems. Also keep in mind every instance you encounter has different demands on your gpu i have found ground to increase gpu usage quite a bit. Doing what the tech says is a good idea adjust graphics while your fps is low to a stable 30 plus. Lowering your aa level and turning post processing off will make a big change i am not that familiar with 120gt but im pretty sure that is a fairly old or low gpu if you have to lower the settings significantly and do not like the resulting graphics you will have to upgrade you gpu. Also of note 60fps is usually the desired fps.

Also you may want to enable v sync or max fps of 60.

Well I have been starting the game in safe mode plus I adjusted the video settings pretty low. My fps is running any where from around 45-60 and I still have periods of lag. When it is lagging the fps is around 5 or so but at least I can move around and do things a little better. I would still like to figure out this problem so I can be more affective in STF's. If anybody has any more suggestions it would be very much appreciated.

Thank you for the help so far.

Are you monitoring your CPU and GPU temps (just throwing ou some other possibilities because that would also cause an FPS stepdown if they were hovering near their respective heat threshholds)

Second have you done a virus/malware check recently because any unnecessary process running in the backgropund leeching CPU cycles might cause this as well.

And I posit the above only because of the fact this seems to hit in cycles of 2 or so minutes; although is it were a heat threshold issue; I'd be a little surprised that the CPU and GPU are able to recover and cool down enough again for your FPS to increase after teh first slowdown event.

Well I just realized something, while replying and trying to load up a screen shot I left the game running in the background. When the game lags out my computer runs super slow. So it sounds like to me my computer is to blame for all my lagging. Does that sound right to you guys and gals. Could still use some suggestions.

    Thanks

It is not unheard of that the game eats up CPU resources depending on in game settings. If it happens again, look at the performance tab of the Task Manager. If you dtry turning off Dynamic lighting, and turning shadows to low, it may alleviate the issue.

I downloaded afterburner and have been watching it. When laging my gpu usage drops form 42% to 5%. Fan runns consistent and heat doesnt rise. Dynamic lighting is off and so is the shadows. Still there but not as persistent tonight. Also cannot find another aplication running in the background.

Again i would like to know your video settings but i would suggest lowering everything to absolute minimal and see if you encounter the problem then, If you do not then u can begin to slowly increase settings.

    Kryton,

You can take a screenshot of your game UI using the /screenshot_ui command. Unfortunately, your GPU appears to be below the minimum system requirements for the game.

    OS Windows XP SP2 / Windows Vista / Windows 7 (32 or 64-bit)
CPU Intel Core 2 Duo 1.8 Ghz or AMD Athlon X2 3800+
    Memory 1GB RAM
Video NVIDIA GeForce 7950 / ATI Radeon X1800 / Intel HD Graphics
    Sound DirectX 9.0c Compatible Soundcard
    DirectX Version 9.0c or Higher

Like I said Im not that savvy when it comes to computers but if my system is below the minimum requirements then why did it run for over a year with only one issue that was resolved with a bigger power pack.I had overheating problems about 3 months after launch. In the past I have had very little lag that was resolved by reseting my router.

you can sometime get a unsupported hardware to work but there is not promises it will continue to do so. the devs code the game to the minimium specs and at any patch there may be a feature or function added that the unsupport hardware can no longer handle.

Heh, just tried Rift to see if it was on my end, ironically it's working fine so it's definitely an issue with Cryptic (yet again!). Honestly, I can play with bugs just as long as they're not uber major, but I can NOT play with lag like this tbh.

Yep, trying again and it seems the ping keeps hanging around 350+ms the entire time. I spend about 4 hours playing Anarchy Online at a stable ping of 22ms with vent's ping at 23ms stable. Seriously Cryptic, it can't be that hard to keep the servers stable, can it?

And it it's an external problem then here's how to fix the problem: Cancel contract, get a new contract with a company that has half a brain and voila, issues solved.

I'd be happy if it was just lag, but instead I just get disconnected. Coincidentally, it's only when I play STO or CO, and it seems to dump off in that cogentco.com network...hmm...wonder where the problem may be?
