The Mudd store the answer to RNG fatigue. Want to buy equivalent content direct? There you go. There's a high price point still but that's what RNG schemes were designed to hit. Why high price points needed? Because with a F2P game the free aspect comes from high rollers subsidizing the maintenance and development costs of everyone else. This is what the format signed up for. Subscription services spread the cost out evenly to all players, but that format was tried and failed for this very game. And these days, subs aren't proof against exploitive microtransactions. With WoW its additive and you're also paying through systems designed to maximize your hyper-addictive grinding to max out your sub time. Sub games were notorious for being second jobs you paid for when STO launched. The shift to F2P complimented STO's more relaxed nature.

Basically, with a game like STO this is the only viable dev model. For something else that could work, I think you're better off with a co-op capable Trek-themed CRPG (similar to Warhammer 40k Rogue Trader) than trying to work out another MMO. A Trek CRPG could 1:1 replace most of what players do with STO, but in a standard retail model. Create-your-own-crew and the Trek theme are the only changes you really need (UGC system a plus).

I'm not exactly sure what the chance for an epic token is on Phoenix boxes but if it's the same as most Cryptic lockboxes the top tier prize usually has a 1/250 chance of dropping. So, from opening 300 boxes you're falling within the normal odds. Thing is the Random Number Gods are fickle.

I suspect the odds are indeed lower simply because its a much cheaper box. Thus a similar expenditure of resources results in a T6 ship, requiring more boxes to be opened on average. Testing data bears this out, though I don't have any to link off hand.

I'm too lazy to use the terrible forum search for old results, but based on past anecdotes I think the Phoenix epic token is more like 1 in 500 to 1 in 1,000 for an Epic.

There's better data on lock boxes and promo packs, based on many tests lock boxes are 1 in 250 and promo packs are 1 in 100.

Those are not official numbers, just multiple people doing tests of 1,000 - 10,000 boxes.

Warning: there is no pity system and probability has no memory. After you have opened 249 lock boxes the odds of the next key winning a ship are still the original 1 in 250. If the gods hate you you can open 1,000+ boxes and never get a ship.

The Random Number Gods rarely bless me. Unless its in FATE/Grand Order. Then they bless me once or twice and then shun me as they do in STO for months.

I got a total of two Epics across two accounts before they "improved" the odds (oddly always during one of the phoenix events), but none at all since then. And since I am a bit of an altaholic I buy a LOT of boxes with all the upgrading I do.

During my first couple of years of playing, I never had a sniff of an Epic token or an Ultra Rare for that matter. Since the abolition of green phoenix tokens I've managed to collect ten epics. On the past couple of occasions though, I've opened about 500 packs each time and my luck appears to have reverted back to those initial two years. I do have a bit of a ritual I go though when opening them, but haven't noticed any significant pattern to my success in-between - I keep hoping to though...haha! Perhaps I've just used up all my luck!

To get an Epic token one must stand on ones head, no hands. Close your right eye and stick your tongue out to the left and twist it over itself before biting down on it. The using your legs spin yourself around on your head whilst singing yankie doodle dandie and silent night at the same time. If you can master that and open a lock box at the same time then you will get an epic token eventually.

Only open boxes if you need lobi or want phoenix upgrades. If you open them expecting to get something you're going to have a bad time. I've opened my fair share of boxes, lockbox, promo, and phoenix over the years. it's always when I least expect it that I drop something.

Actually, opening lockboxes for lobi is pretty much useless, there are never more than a few lobi one as far as I know of (they are like the boxes and purple crystals in ESO in that respect except that you don't have to trade the boobie prizes back to the box vendor to get the lobi the way you have to for the crystals in ESO).

The only way to get enough lobi to do anything useful with it (unless you are a whale who buys a bunch of key packs on a whim) is to use the campaign reward lobi option. The most popular use for keys these days seems to be to convert cash into EC, not to open boxes with, anyway.

After all that you still add the word 'eventually' at the end 😳 - I'd need a guaranteed instant win if I had to sing anything!🙈

My opening ritual is far more sedate....involving flying around (in space, not my living room) and visiting certain sectors, planets and not opening the packs too quickly one after another. Can't complain too much though, as I've snagged a decent number of Infinity T6's & a couple of promo ships along the way.

As Darkblade says, only ever do it when you've a need for Lobi and/or Phoenix upgrades though and keep expectations low.

I think the average is around 5.5 Lobi per box, but I've had 15 or 20 on rare occasions. So in general I assume 100 keys will net me at least 500 Lobi. I've built up 16,000 over a long period of time, taking in Campaign Event rewards and opening boxes with keys obtained from both the Zen Store and the Exchange. I can verify that one, as I have done the crazy many times. lol
Only thing you cannot get via in game means at all is a Lifer Sub. If its in the C-Store, there are in game ways to get it. If its on the Exchange, there are in game ways to get it.
The only resource it takes... is time.
And man does that feeling of accomplishment feel good when you finally do get it.

And on Consoles even the Lifetime can be earned in game, minus the monthly stipend mind you.
