Yornid, on the edge of winter! This year's Winter Event ship is the Tamarian Deep Space cruiser, from the classic TNG Episode "Darmok!"

It comes with Inspiration abilities! This is fantastic. I was hoping what they did for the summer ship would start a new trend. Looks like a great ship!

Don't let them promote you. Don't let them transfer you. Don't let them do anything that takes you off the bridge of that ship, because while you're there... you can make a difference.

    Looks nice.
Stats decent, nothing major but that's an event ship.

Console/trait seem more geared toward PVP than PVE

    Edit:
I like the way this ship looks and it is TNG canon, but despite that i do not think i will use it often due to the lack of science seating.

This program, though reasonably normal at times, seems to have a strong affinity to classes belonging to the Cat 2.0 program. Questerius 2.7 will break down on occasion, resulting in garbage and nonsense messages whenever it occurs. Usually a hard reboot or pulling the plug solves the problem when that happens.

Indeed - I found it nice to see the abilities there even though it isn't a full-spec Command ship, lacking the Commander seat.

Kind of wish they'd make the commander seat universal.

Ambassador Kael did a great job naming the ship's abilities :)

I think many Captains will have FUN tooling around in this revised & expanded Talarian Observation Craft!
I think one of my Ferengi will have one named the 'C-store'!

I have a new fanon/homebrew/wip hostile species; the Tanarians! Very aggressive, colonial theocratic empire...
Only the Breen & Nausicaans get along with them...

It probably should be classified as a battlecruiser as it is setup like one and have the appropriate starship mastery package.

Except it isn't. Battlecruiser's can equip Dual- and Dual-Heavy Cannons.

If it has to have a role name some good candidates would be something like "Light Battlecruiser", "Escort Battlecruiser" or even "Pocket Battlecruiser" since it is pretty close to the battlecruiser except that instead of giving up Attract Fire for the ability to mount DHCs it sacrifices it for extra maneuverability (except raw speed since it is slightly slower) and (ironically, considering it gives up Attract Fire) better protection than a standard battlecruiser.

sounds to me like it's more of a Warship than anything else... could be a precursor to a new hybrid ship type?
*eDit* i misread prior posts' comments regarding DCs & DHCs. i'm not sure what it would be beyond a pretty space Barbie. Fun to pew-pew in! ;)

FYI all those classes are nonexistent.

A "Light Battle Cruiser" is a plain simple Heavy Cruiser.

An Escort battle Cruiser is a non existent role. It's either an Escort or a Battle Cruiser. With the former being the cheap option and the latter being a Long Range Commerce Raider or interceptor for Heavy Cruisers doing commerce raiding.

A "Pocket Battle Cruiser" would be akin a Heavy Cruiser, but the name would be controversial since there was only one country, the one waving the swastika, who ever employed Pocket Battleships.

The Tamarian Deep Space Cruiser is an odd ship with near Escort/Raider like maneuverability and an inertia to drift figures of eight.

True enough, though it depends on how you look at it, and I was trying to go with something that might fit with current STO usage (which is not much like realworld navy usage). A battlecruiser (it is one word, not two) is not just a heavier than usual cruiser however, they had a specific role that was different from that of a normal cruiser of any weight.

In the real world the class terminology is a bit fuzzy to say the least, the various uses of the term "frigate" is a good example of that for instance, and Trek is even worse since it is a juxtaposition of 18th century sailing ship and WWII story projected into the future. Even worse, the spinoffs then haphazardly mixed in a few contemporary navy concepts into the already uneasy jumble.

Frankly, the Tamarian ship is an almost perfect example of the kind of thinking that went into an 18th century frigate (which unlike today's frigate was a large ship type, essentially a very fast (and usually disproportionately long and narrow for the standards of the time) single deck or deck-and-a-half cruiser able to chase down and destroy (the then) conventional light cruisers and fast merchant ships like the Clippers, and avoid being chased down by heavier armed ships because of their unusual speed. In fact, the modern equivalent of the sailing ship frigate IS the battlecruiser.

In STO, like in the contemporary realworld usage, the term frigate is already taken by much smaller and weaker ships than that, however, and considering the similarities to the STO battlecruiser the use of the term "battlecruiser" as a starting point seemed appropriate.
