Why is Ker'rat the only open pvp area?

ftldiver#6565 ftldiver Member Posts: 10 Arc User
Having only one area to pvp sucks, people say pvp is dead but all the people I meet pvp, and spend alot of money to get what they think are good things. But we can only goto to one spot. Where there is, on PlayStation, a group of three that spawn camp new players to the point of bullying. With no option to escape. Why can't there be a delay for damage so a player can abort the mission and escape, or another pvp area where you can play with others. They find the Cat being a fun fast speed too unbalanced but let bullying happen with no option to fight back for a new or experienced player.

Your fun is not wrong, but the people you meet are apparently very different from the normal STO players.

Cryptic loves money. If PVP really drove sales, PVP would get lots of support and new features so that Cryptic could rake in more of those sweet PVP dollars.

Unfortunately for PVP, that is not the case. Space Barbie, TFOs, and story episodes featuring Trek voice actors are what drive sales. So we get new ships and TV show gear, TFOs, story episodes.

Indeed out come the forum PvP haters. lol

The problem is simple OP. This game HAD a fairly large PvP fan base. Some of those old players are still around. Thing is those of us that are still here are players that will spend money on PvE things and use them in PvP. The PvPers that wanted actual good PvP without the stink of PvE power creep and unbalanced gear designed to fight NPC hit point soaks... left long ago.

Pretty much around the time of the Delta expansion (9 years ago) the PvP player base went from probably 1,000 consistent players to the handful we have today. It was the greatest expansion ever and I guess the PvP players anyway didn't love it.

One thing you might want to try is the "Private" tab in the TFO menu. This should allow you to set up some one versus one fun in a similar manner to the old "private challenge" function we had on PC. Perhaps this would allow you to get some practice in without any issues?

I'm just gonna say this as a fellow forumite for now... don't start.

To the OP... what you experienced is unfortunately part of the PvP experience in STO. Most players tend to lean more towards the PvE side as PvP is unbalanced. Even most mid to high end PvE builds are going to be devastating against players because of the sheer difference in HP between NPCs and Players. I personally don't like PvP. However I have enjoyed some battles when both of us were more evenly matched. I also enjoy the indirect Mechanics Race in the Competitive TFO Twin Tribulations. If you want to get into PvP... you're probably gonna have to find a fleet that will help you build for it, and teach you the ropes. Otherwise you're probably going to get the same experience quite a bit.

Great notes guys but I notice No one addressed the question in a real way. What does any of those thoughts have to do with adding a delay to respond at ker'rat? Or copying a new area on the DS9 side of the map. Theres going to be a 2 year lul in New star trek content from paramount this seems like a good time to address these. Also guys it's not for me, I've been around long enough that you can't spawn trap me without an heroic effort. But I put vids up watching this one group (lol who all play in one room, dad mom and kid to maximize the efforts if you can believe it) just bully newbs. I put it online for laughs but these poor kids don't even know whats happening to them. It is just not fair game play. I don't know I like the game I like helping new guy chase the barriers to entry on this game are high. The only reason you play this ps2 quality game is your feels for star trek. The devs could take a week to code some fair play into their gambling simulator. Just saying.

^ Sound advice. PvP can be fun when running private queues with friends as it tends to be more balanced.

    Indeed it is,
Ker'ratt itself has been a horrible place to be introduced to pvp for many years now..
Spawn camping ruined that for many..

My post above answers the question title of "why is Ker'rat the only open PVP area?" and more generally, why PVP is not being developed at all.

The TL;DR: Cryptic is a business, their goal is to make money by catering to the majority, and the majority of players want PVE content. That's not the answer you want to hear, but it's the truth.

It wouldn't take a week...it would take well over a year to 'fix' PvP, however, PvP population is a pin-head in a haystack, therefore most players don't care about PvP, and PvP does not bring in money in this free to play game.

Isn't that for a dev to say? I'm mean all for prognostication but if your not involved in daily activities of the actual company there's no need to defend their lack of actions or put forward the idea that you have solved it and simply " know" I mean I appreciate the time effort involved in responding but how about giving an idea that a dev might see if they ever got curious to read the thread that might help to solve the situation in an easy was. You know a little brain storming. If your that educated in the business thou maybe you might have an answer to this, how much coding effort would it take to copy paste a 2nd ker'rat near ds9 or simply put a invincible proc to respond characters in the area?

Devs have said it several times that PvP population is so slow that it's not worth to make a priority. A dev will most likely not gonna personally come repeat what has been stated elsewhere several times.

PvP not being worth it or the playerbase being predominantly PvE focused isn't the opinion of some "PvP haters" like some people in the thread like to imply but rather official Cryptic response to the question posted.

Now I'm not categorically against fixing PvP but I wouldn't want it to happen in the expense of parts of the game I do enjoy and quite frankly if you look at similar games they also tend to be PvE focused, WoW hasn't had major PvP updates since Battle for Azeroth IIRC and PvP in FF14 is clearly a side activity as well and while there's more recent major updates even then that's clearly not the focus and yes STO has more in common with WoW or FF14 then it has with Eve Online.

The devs have said. Multiple times. Yet this topic keeps coming up and some players continue to be unwilling to accept the answer. But it has been answered. Their last attempt to address PVP was with the Competitive Reputation and it was not met with much enthusiasm. Unfortunately, the PVP community of STO has shrunk over the years, and PVP has become less and less popular among the rest of the community, that it's now no longer worth the investment in time and money. It's not completely ignored, though. Powers and abilities are still constantly being tweaked for balance and PVP is kept in mind with that. But beyond that, new maps and other new things for PVP are highly unlikely. Sorry, OP.

You guys keep saying pvp has been fix attempted, there is nothing wrong with pvp in this game as a play choice. There are plenty of people who want and are willing to private pvp. They are a simple game chat "hey anybody want to pvp" and you will be piping shortly. There is nothing to be fixed. That has nothing to do with a map that spawn traps the players who load into it. Let me repeat there is nothing wrong with pvp. Older players with more gear are always stronger than younger less supplied players. Nothing wrong with that. That's good game balance makes the long haulers work towards something and inspires purchases. That has nothing to do with the only map we have available to randomly play strangers has a mechanic where anyone can be spawn trapped at anytime by one player if you a new enough player. It's like the devs says this bully actions is what they want players to do. It is not fair or balanced game play. Being killed in one shot by a player with 9x my power level is not broken pvp. That's mmo pvp. Nothing wrong with it. But allowing a map to let you abuse players is bad business and I'm not gonna stop asking why the devs won't do something about it until I'm answered by one of them . So get used to thread topic it's gonna be the new hotness on every thread I think it should be in and Facebook and YouTube with video examples.

Well, good luck with that, because you're not likely to get an answer about it here, Reddit, or Facebook. You'd do better to bring it up during a livestream and get the same answer that everyone else gets and what has been given to you here. But the rest of that sounds like a threat to derail thread topics, so I'd caution against that. It won't go over well here.

As this keeps coming up with the same results, it might be time to add this to the FCT, although I am hesitant to do that.

The problem with that is the devs appear to have come to the wrong conclusion. Competitive PVP did not fail because it was PVP based which is the impression I get from the way the devs talk. Competitive failed because it was really badly designed and no fun to play. It wasn’t met with much enthusiasm due to the poor design rather then having PVP. The ground was a little better then space Competitive.

You may be right. Making it a combination of PVE/PVP didn't seem to resonate well with either side of the community.

Kar'rat is the way it is because the pvp base simply is not there to support more open pvp zones in this game. It sucks if you're someone who enjoys pvp but that's just the reality of things. Devs have said multiple times on here, on facebook, and in live streams of the past that there simply isn't enough of a pvp community to justify major investments into pvp. The majority of the playerbase in this game is pve focused with very little crossover. competitive wargames was an attempt to revive pvp interest and it tanked hard. If you want dedicated pvp on the regular, then I would recommend something like SWTOR's pvp scene or World of Warcraft if you want MMO style pvp. Those games were made with pvp in mind from the start and continue to have at least semi-active pvp scenes and are far more active than you will ever get here in the pvp realm.

with that said they do try to keep pvp in mind when developing new abilities and from time to time have made attempts to correct balance issues based on various reports submitted. I have handed a few reports from pvp players up the chain about various bugs that I've seen make it into the patch fixes. If you want to see more pvp support in game, then you will need to convince Cryptic it's worth the time and resources to them. Otherwise you'll get nowhere fast.

Lastly to echo my cohorts, I strongly suggest you don't try to derail threads as it go the way you think it will.

I'm gonna agree with this one, it's confusing to start a pvp match as a newb no explanation on any of the menus as to what to do, having to individually type names to invite, yes poorly designed sure. But still not that much of a problem with 13 years of YouTube videos explaining how to do it. Still nothing to do with a map, the only map we can play against strangers is unfair and needs what seems to be an easy fix to placate the vocal minority here. Copy ker'rat over to ds9 side or put a no kill proc for 15 secs when you spawn in so you could escape the map with your ship. Focus guys I'm seeing alot of sudo explanations of what happened, there's no need to go into bases of players, and what you remember some dev saying back when. This is problem. Paying customer's are unhappy and being abused by other players it's bad business, as for fears for me boys don't worry, clear articulated > @valoreah said:

Hey I'm not sure if you have ever run a business but the only things I do in my business are what my customers demand of me or they won't use my services. That's normal business. Vague demands to "fix" pvp when no one here has articulated anything a dev could do to fix your perceived problems has nothing to do with the only real problem, the map ker'rat is glitched and traps players they need an escape. That's a simple articulated demand a dev could clearly understand and fix simply. Unless it's not which one of them can say. This is what social media is for gentleman to open let everyone see what's going on and discuss. If enough people informed the proper people with simple clear problems and solutions we could get a fix and extend the shelf life of this ps2 game a long time longer.

"Why can't players abort mission to exit Ke'rat" feels like a different request from your thread title and 90% of your first post.

That seems like a much more realistic question and request, and if it really is impossible to exit without closing the game client then it would make sense as a bug report. I don't PVP so I have no idea whether that claim is accurate or hyperbole.

However, players do not get to make demands here, only polite request. "Management reserves the right to deny service to Karens."

This is not the answer you want, but it is the truth. It may be a very simple fix for Cryptic, but it is a fix they do not find it worth devoting any time to. You are just going to have to accept that.

I think not my friend, the world doesn't change by the inaction of people, that's how you get regular people to let horrible things happen the apathy that nothing will change so why try. Every opinion so far refers to fixing pvp like there is something wrong with it. There is not. It's a map glitch. The same thing was happening in other tfos many moons ago and they eventually did somewhere ot was forced to the surface by simular notes in the various forum. It appears many of have given up hope. But hold my friends fair play can be achieved, obviously not by anyone here but someone, maybe me. I'll keep everyone posted.

Glitch? What "glitch"? You keep saying that players are spawn camping and blowing people up as they re-spawn. That's not a glitch. That's you too slow hitting the warp out button before you get blown up again. 🤷‍♀️

PVP in Kerrat is the equivalent of a level 60 anything going to the starting areas of Warcraft and ganking newbies.
and @baddmoonrizin I think you probably SHOULD FCT this paticular subject. by the FCT definition, Devs have stated they are not going to try to fix it.

You guys keep saying pvp has been fix attempted, there is nothing wrong with pvp in this game as a play choice.

True, as a choice, there's nothing wrong with it, but PvP is fundamentally broken due to the power creep.
There are plenty of people who want and are willing to private pvp.

Again, yes, because open PvP is...fundamentally broken.
Older players with more gear are always stronger than younger less supplied players. Nothing wrong with that.

This is where your argument starts to fall apart. Take two players. Both of them having been playing this game for the past half decade, both of them comparatively the same level on Endeavors. Both of them using gold XV, both of them specced properly. Now, put one of them in a 5/3 DHC canon ship, and the other in a 4/4 beam boat. Who do you think will win? Again, PvP is fundamentally broken due to the power creep and the early favouritism the devs put towards DHC.
That's good game balance makes the long haulers work towards something and inspires purchases. That has nothing to do with the only map we have available to randomly play strangers has a mechanic where anyone can be spawn trapped at anytime by one player if you a new enough player.

So, you have an arguement that the map is the problem...but then you say this...
Being killed in one shot by a player with 9x my power level is not broken pvp. That's mmo pvp. Nothing wrong with it.

...and you have killed your own argument, and argument for PvP dead with that single sentence.
