IMO the ship designs year after year for the Winter event is getting old and needs updating. How about giving players an option to either get 100-200 Lobbi or a C store discount (100% or 50%) or something like that?
The more choices the better. After all, this is the season to be more giving anyways. Respectfully, we do need to make new rewards and year after year is the same thing.
I respectfully disagree with this suggestion. Ship designs are getting old? It's literally a new ship design every year. But your suggestion of an alternate reward is to give people the option of literally an older, already available ship? That contradicts your complaint about "old" designs. Plus, you're essentially advocating to give people a similar reward to what they can receive from the year long Event Campaign, except here they can get it after completing one event. If you don't like a given year's Winter ship, don't claim it. 🤷🏼♀️

I wouldn't mind some options. Options are generally good.
Maybe a 50% off ship coupon? That could put money into the C-store while also helping to incentivize players to spend that money. Someone hates the look of this or that ship so they buy themselves a different one.
And yes, a quantity of Lobi would be okay. 200 seems decent. Not enough to buy a ship, or even half of aship as the C-Store coupon would allow, but someone could buy things other than ships or save up their lobi to get a ship eventually if they chose.
In any case, it seems that it wouldn't hurt Cryptic any to do this.
One of the good things about the summer and winter event ships is that they are often really off-the-wall ships that encourage people to step out of their usual ship setups and try something different, having options like that would undermine that effect. Doing the same thing all the time gets boring.
Nah. Lobi should remain exclusive to lockboxes. It shouldn't be handed out anymore than it already is.
I rarely use the event ships, I generally just don't care for them as their themes usually don't fit my characters. That doesn't mean I think I deserve to get something else instead. One could always choose not to participate. Take a break from the game, or do something else in STO.
The "weird" ships are just for me unlocking tier 5 traits and having options on whatever consoles they may have.
But I am still for options.
Someone doesn't like the winter event ship? I don't see the harm in giving them a 50% C-Store ship coupon as an option. They can get the "weird" ship for free or pay half for a "normal" ship.
Maybe they got the Zen from a lifetime sub, but it will burn the Zen all the same.
Maybe they would have eventually broken down and paid full price for the ship, but maybe they wouldn't. Maybe Cryptic has numbers that show that more people will eventually break down than not, and in that case it makes sense not to offer that discount.
And the same could be argued for Lobi, I suppose, though at a 200 rate I am not sure how much harm is done since a full ship costs four times that. It's an even worse deal than a half-off ship coupon, but with the advantage of flexibility (you can buy something other than a ship).
Still, options are good.
They may not always make sense, but they are good.
A few years back there was an option to buy a Lobi bundle of if I remember correctly 200 Lobi from trading in a bunch of ornaments. They've only done it the one time, but it was a nice bonus.
Went and looked this one up it was the "Winter in April" event back in 2019.
I had an idea where they could let you pick a previous event ship over the latest one if you don't like the new one and missed any older ones, but do it during only one event of course.
Options sound nice, but we already get the lobi option from the event campaign, and free lobi means giving up money from key sales so they can't do too much of that.
I would like the option to choose from past event rewards. I was unable to play when my beloved eisenberg class was available and have been holding a candlelight vigil ever since.
I had an idea where they could let you pick a previous event ship over the latest one if you don't like the new one and missed any older ones, but do it during only one event of course.
Yeah I think this is actually a good idea.
Like I said, Lobi should remain a bit more exclusive and there are plenty of C-store giveaways or options to acquire those ships cheaply. We don't really need more of those options.
But, since previous event ships aren't really available anymore (unless, in some cases, one is willing to gamble with the Phoenix boxes at very bad odds) it makes sense to include them as an option for their related events.
Limit it to max one ship if necessary, so you can't get the Chel Grett and the current event ship in the same year for example, but you can choose which one you'd like to get.
Ok. As some long time players know, slotting past/missed event ships was a thing that was possible. The devs made the decision to do away with that. Of course, over the years, players have complained about wanting to get missed ships. So, the devs decided to start putting past event ships in the Phoenix Box. Then they started putting some in the Mudd's Market. So, past event ships are made available. Some players may not like how they've been made available again, but they have been. And that's not likely to change. 🤷🏼♀️

I think it's safe to say that all players who were discussing it were aware of this. Thanks for the reminder though, I had forgotten how this was indeed a thing in the past.
Still, doesn't mean we can't advocate for these ships to be available through event/ reputation projects again.

Oh, I agree! I'd love to go back to the way it originally was. I just don't want anyone to get their hopes up that it might ever be a thing again.

I have to voice my disagreement with the OP on having the option of Lobi or a Z-Store coupon as we currently get that from the year-long event campaign.
However, I'm all for the Summer & Winter ships to come with options.
Perhaps the best option is that we get to choose from one of two items:
The second option would allow us to unlock any previous Event ship account-wide if we didn't want the current Event Ship.
However, I don't think having multiple options is necessary, and I don't think it's fair to put 20-days worth of effort into the game to get a bundle of Lobi or a Ship Coupon.

I remember when we could get past event ships if we left the project slotted. I got a couple that way before they did away with it.
Be nice to have that again. Yes, I know, not gonna happen when they can put them in Mudd's.
I remember running 75 ice races in 2014-15. I was away for the 2012-2013 events and wanted all 3 Breen ships. I think that was the last event where you could choose to add projects for older ships in addition to the project for the new ship.
When they took away the old projects choice, they did drop the number of races from 25 down to 20, and they also made it an account unlock. Apparently before 2014 it was a per-character unlock? (Ouch!)

Yes, the previously acquired ships were made account unlocks with the change, and I believe the Winter 2015 event was the last hurrah for slotting and obtaining any missed event ships.

I don't think that seems fair, as a new player I didn't "miss out" I never even had the option... It would cost me $200 to get ONE event ship from Mudd's store... I love the Demon Klingon ships but to get them it shouldn't cost 1/3 of my fortnightly pay check to get
IIRC, character-restricted ships that were unlocked were automatically made account unlocks when they changed that though.
So the end result was mostly the same.
If I recall correctly.
True, but when people complain about not being able to slot old projects like in the good old days, they should also be thankful that they no longer need to do that for every character and every ship. Also that it's 20 days not 25.
am I wrong? I thought you could get all the event ships through the epic tickets from phoenix boxes?
The older ones, but not the newest ones -- they are going into Mudds Market. Also, epic phoenix token odds are terrible, much worse than lock box ships. Cryptic doesn't give out numbers but my guess is somewhere in the 1:500 to 1:1,000 range, vs. 1:250 for lock box ships and 1:100 for promo pack ships.

I did say that some players may not like it. 🤷♀️ But cost aside, one cannot argue that they aren't made available.

I would argue the opposite they are not available to all unless you have a surplus income... There is no way to acquire them for anyone who isn't rich... Hardly seems fair for new players just because we weren't playing

Counterpoint: They could have decided not to have them available at all like most MMOs tend to do with their seasonal rewards. As for the "not fair because we weren't playing then" argument... that in itself is an unfair argument, and almost comes across as entitlement. "Why should X have Y when Z wasn't playing at that time? Its unfair to Z!"
Hate to say it, but even in real life, you miss out if you're not there. I've missed out on so many conventions, but I don't complain because, frankly, I couldn't be there anyways.
The fact that STO does make past event rewards available is rare in MMOs. I personally only know of one other game that does that, and that is FF14. However FF14 just puts them in the Mogstation (their version of the C-Store) after a year or so, meaning there is an exclusivity period before making them available again. To my knowledge, no other MMO does that. WoW makes them time sensitive exclusive, pretty sure TOR does that...

Ok, so you want to debate semantics. Not gonna do that. They are available to all. An individual's ability to acquire may differ, but availability is definitely there. I'm by no means rich, and though I've been playing since 2012, I've missed a few events myself. I just budget and save for the things I want. If you really want it, you'll find a way. Otherwise, life's not fair, and it's not meant to be. 🤷🏼♀️

We lost something, but we gained something too.
You can, but they are Character only, not account bound.
However, if you complete the winter event, the ship you get is account bound (reclaimable on all toons)
