Since you don't seem to be getting any help, I'll see what I can do.

First, you're on Windows, right? 10? I need you to download one of Microsoft's own diagnostic tools called Process Monitor that I recently used to fix my own crash. You can get it from here:
    https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/downloads/procmon
or as part of the free Sysinternals Suite on the Microsoft App Store that's built into Windows.

Then, what you need to do is:
    1. Run Process Monitor, and it will start logging everything every process on your computer is doing in detail.
    2. Immediately start STO, let it go until it crashes.
    3. Go Back to Process Monitor
    3. If you want to, and this is sort of advanced but not necessary and will reduce file size and keep me from seeing what absolutely everything on your computer is doing (not that I care), add a filter so that only entries with the Process Name of GameClient.exe are included. You'll have to change the first dropdown from Architecture to Process Name, then type in GameClient.exe in the third box, and then click Add and then click Apply. If you do it right, you should see the log pare down to only entries that start with GameClient.exe.
Adding a filter looks like this:
    4f983552hpoe.png

    4. Save the log file, the default path is in system32 so you might want to put it somewhere easier to find like your desktop.
    5. Put the log file up on Google Drive or somewhere I can download it and take a look and see what's going on.

Or, if you'd prefer to try to diagnose it yourself using Process Monitor, after you've filtered it down to GameClient.exe, try to find where it throws werfault.exe and exits thread, which is the crash itself, should be near but not at the bottom since it has to do a bunch of clean up afterwards, and see what it tries doing in the half second or so before that, and something in there is probably the culprit.

Well, I tried to help, but they apparently didn't like me and removed my post, probably for telling you where to go to get a diagnostic tool from Microsoft's own website or app store that would help. Probably don't like external links. So, I'll try typing all that out again since I didn't copy it before posting, this time without external links.

Open the Microsoft Store, built into Windows 10, and search for the Sysinternals Suite, made by Microsoft itself, and install it (it's free). Part of this Suite of utilities is a program called Process Monitor. Shame I can't give you the link to download only that rather than have to grab the 20 or so utilities in the full suite, but they are nice utilities to have either way, so eh.

    Once it's installed:
    1. Run Process Monitor, should be in your start menu after install, just search for it, and it will start taking a log of everything every process on your computer does.
    2. Run STO, let it crash out.
    3. Go back to Process Monitor.
    4. If you want to, not necessary and kind of advanced, but will reduce file size and cut out everything else that your computer is doing, add a filter to only include events with the process name of GameClient.exe. You can get to the filters either by going to Filter->Filter at the top, or the blue funnel icon, or Ctrl+L. You'll have to change the first drop down box from Architecture to Process Name and type GameClient.exe in the third box, make sure the last thing is Include (should be default) and then click Add and then click Apply. Looks like this:
    crdakuj06pcx.png
If you do it right, you should see the log pare down to only entries with GameClient.exe.
    5. Save the log file, the default path is the windows system folder so you might want to put it somewhere more easily found like your desktop.
    6. Put the log file up on Google Drive or somewhere I can grab it take a look at it. I guess you'd have to private message the link to me or something if they don't like external links.
    7. Don't forget to quit Process Monitor because a running log of everything everything on your computer does can take up a lot of memory if left running for too long.

If you'd like to try diagnosing it yourself, after you've filtered it down, try finding where in the list of events it throws werfault.exe and Exits Thread, that's the crash itself. Should be near but not at the bottom, because it has to do a lot of automatic clean up afterwards. Something in the last half second or so before then is probably the culprit.

For me, it was Razer Chroma.

*Edit* Ah, the original post is back. Guess it just had to go through for review due to the link.

With this last patch, I had to uninstall/reinstall the ARC client if you happen to use that one. Something seems to have changed (for some of us) where it wont connect anymore.

There is a problem with DirectX according to the Windows event log:

    Faulting module path: d3d12.dll

    Faulting package full name:
    Faulting package-relative application ID:

Since DirectX hasn't changed but the STO client has, I'd say there is no need to try to update DirectX.

I got it too, win8.1 throwing d3dx12.dll error. Funny how I can play LOTRO just fine with DX11.

STO Client was working fine before the patch.

    I have the same problem.
I have windows 8.1 and directx 11 and now, after patch, I need directx 12 to play.
unfortunately directx 12 are only compatible with windows 10.
now i can't install windows 10. is there a different solution or did this patch end my STO experience?

I have been having the same problem since the update every driver is up to date I am running windows 8.1 never had any problems until today even went as far as submitting a ticket and still no results I'm at a loss as to how to resolve it short of having to uninstall the game and reinstall it don't want to have to do that but if I have no alternative so be it

Getting the same problem, it keeps saying that the client quit unexpectedly and the Arc server wouldn't even update and let me do anything and now it won't allow me to log in. I'm using Windows 8.1 as Windows 10 was a hot mess and said to still be a hot mess with Windows 11 said to be even worse.

Looks like the patches have broken the game's log in. This makes it impossible to play the new mission and take part in the new event, can't play a game you can't log into.

For what its worth, the ARC client seems to have a similar problem. As soon as I tried the "upgrade" it crashed and won't come back.

Protip - test your new version on all supported windows versions before release.

Well, still the same message here, same as yesterday: unable to start game client: client quit unexpectedly
I tried safe mode and nothing changed. I'm verifying files now, just to do something, but won't change a bit.
Unless they fix that (thx gearbox for nothing) I guess it's time for a big break.
We have to learn this lesson. Never use a PC to play online games.

For what its worth, the ARC client seems to have a similar problem. As soon as I tried the "upgrade" it crashed and won't come back.

Protip - test your new version on all supported windows versions before release.

Even more Protip: Don't use that cancer that is DirectX.

I can confirm this game breaking error.
    Windows 8.1 User here.

Patching went without problems, but "engaging" ended up in the error message:
"unable to start game client: Client quit unexpectedly"

So far i have tried to deinstall the game including the arc client
and manually cleaned up the registry looking for the key words "cryptic" and "perfectworld".
Forced a complete windows shutdown and reinstalled the client and game.

Unluckily i get the same error message, even with a Force-Verify ticked and On-Demand-Patching unticked.

This is my only installation of the game, aka there is no 2nd Steam installation.

So ye, looking through various forums made me open up the windows explorer, look for the game path
    and manually execute the "gameclient.exe".
Here i get the error message "d3d12.dll" file is missing.

Which yes, is a directx12 "Dynamic Link Library".
And again yes, it is missing on any windows 8/8.1 installation as it was introduced in windows 10
and there is no way to upgrade dx11 to 12 on windows 8/8.1 system. Simple not foreseen by MS.

Does this mean that you have officially dropped Windows 8 support at all?
If so, a lil' warning, like windows 7 users or users who's gfx card don't support dx12 would have been welcome.

Oh, don't worry, my gfx card may be not impressive anymore, Nvidia GeForce GTX 750 TI,
but it run the game actually quiet smooth besides the new explosion animations (hard framerate drops)
and is after a research fully supporting dx12.

So, 2 options actually now. Are you guys going to fix this and if yes, what is the eta?
You know a short notice of you devs (i know your reading :)) or any representative of cryptic
to acknowledge this bug would be all we asking for and give us a huge bunch of trust.

Or are we going to see the currently requirements for sto ninja edited to support windows 10 only.
As of it its right now, its still reading supporting Windows 8. Which at the current state of the client is not true.

I'm sorry if my toning is a bit sarcastic. Having a job and trying to get your game client to run with this bug took is toll allready.
But see it like this, i shared all the lil' info could get with my low pc skills and give it to you know to help to improve the game.
It's up to you now to take that frisbee (no pun intended borticus ;)) and see what you guys can do about this bug and fix it quickly hopefully.

I'm sure i am not the only one who would most appreciate to not be forced to move on to windows 10 before
January 2023 (Official MS Support end of Windows 8).

    Cheers

    Haffkes

PS: If you need me to run any diagnostic tool and post the results, let me know.
