What is the Arc Client?
Install Arc

Black Screen Loop on Startup on MSI

For the past month I have encountered a bug whereby when I start Star Trek Online and hit Engage the game launches but the Cryptic logo and loading bar do not appear and all I get is a black screen and a spinning loading mouse cursor. When this occurs the only way I have found to fix it is to use task manager to close the game client and then restart the game and then it works. Please fix this, thank you.

Are you using ARC to launch the game if so. Stop using it and try to load from the .exe file instead

I was having trouble with Arc, so I switched to my Steam install. Today it started crashing with Steam and when I try launching it straight from the .exe.

I've been having this problem for a few weeks, but this week instead of it stalling on the black screen it crashes to desktop and the Cryptic crash box pops up.

Although a complete pain, a full re install might be in order. Be sure to remove any residual files before hand. Defragging your system too.

Yes, I will definitely try that and see if that fixes it. Thank you everyone for all the possible avenues to fix this.

The last patch notes stated this problem was fixed, but i just got another black screen at startup. So i guess it's not entirly fixed after all.

Launching it directly from the STO folder seem to work, but takes extra work. Especially since i'm using a strong password I can't remember. So I have to look it up in my password manager each time and copy it to login.

Thanks it worked, so that was Arc that seemed preventing me from playing.

It appears that the ARC overlay at launch seems to be causing the black screen. Players have been advised if launching through ARC on the launcher options insert -ArcOverlayEnable 0 in the command line this disables the overlay at launch. Have been using it myself and touch wood have not had a black screen since.
But if you wish to forgo using ARC again that is your choice.

Yup it worked. So no need to enter password each time we would launch directly instead.

Use the same instructions as given to vifarc
