As I commented for 280,000 a try before you buy option would be nice, so you can preview the shield before spending so much dil. 280,000 is really steep. Personally I think 150,000 is a more fair price.
I'd say so too, but the intention is to burn enough dil to stabilize the market. *shrug* I have 26 characters totaling about 428000 dil as of today, so I won't be doing this alas, but I'm sure plenty of people will be happy to take advantage of this. Hopefully they rotate other fun things into the dil market later on.

These are lock box shields, where you have to spend millions of EC per weapon choice pack just to gamble for them.
Check the Exchange prices for these, they were fairly high the last time I looked. If the price has crashed it's because of this.
280,000 dilithium each.... the equivalent of 560 Zen... or 35 character/days refining... for a single character purchase.
I don't know, but that seems high to me.
Not terrible though - we needed a Dil sink and this should help.
It will help only if there's a significant number of people who go for it. If the vast majority of people think it's too expensive, it won't do anything.
I think it should do quite well - the Vanity shields are pretty well sought after and the only two factors that prevent most people having them are the ridiculous 'chance within a chance' method of obtaining from boxes and the fact that the price for them on the exchange tends to be higher than most are willing to pay.
Agreed.
As I said in the other thread, 280k is a bit high but I'm very happy with this.
I've never gotten even a single shield exactly because of what you said: it's a chance within a chance and the prices on the exchange, because of that, are preposterous.
I will buy at least one Sec 31 shield, for sure.

When I first saw it, I figured it'd be a million dilithium a pop. A quarter of that seems quite reasonable. If the point of this is to get the Dilithium Exchange more balanced(more people buying Dilithium for Zen), this seems like a pretty good approach.
~$5 for a lockbox vanity shield is a bargain considering any other method to obtain one.
most of my toons dont have this much dil. i will take a look at whats available and if i can swap dil around, good. (did it once i think and i always forget how to xfer to other toons)
id rather that they offer them in the cstore then for the $5 bucks as mentioned.
It's quite easy: just put it for sale at 25 - which is the minimum - then simply remove the offer.
This will make it go into the Exchange Balance, which is accessible to all of your characters. This is also useful because you can then withdraw any quantity you want, so you can leave some in there for other characters if you don't wanna continually switch.
Alternatively, you can just put it for sale at 25, log onto the character you want it on, remove the offer and withdraw all of it immediately.
As for the shields being put into the C-Store... sorry, but in this case it would defeat the purpose, which is to create a feasable dilithium sink.

For people like you who (apparently) haven't used the dil exchange to shift dil between characters, this might get them to put zen into the dilex to buy the dil for this. That will help the exchange too. Especially since they'll then remove the dil from the game to get their shield(s).
too expensive, but the idea is great
I have a lot of unrefined dil, but I keep the dil for the upgrades and some gears. A vanity shield doesn't worth 250000 dil.
roughly 560 zen is just a hair over the 500 zen cost of some uniforms in the cstore. I definitely agree there should be a preview of some kind and will be asking them about that next time I talk to them. I hope they go further with this kind of stuff and don't stop just here.
edit: helps if I don't hit the post button too soon. Lastly on this, yeah I can see some folks not being fond of the 280k dilithium, but considering what some of these things would go for normally, this is a steal

This is actually a really good deal IMO. It's actually cheaper than just buying the S31 shield on the exchange if you are buying zen to turn into EC through selling keys or whatever. I'll be buying on 3 different characters and have already sold the dil now before the price drops lower. It cost 1.6k zen, which is fine. Leaves me with 39k in the bank; most of which was bought with dil in the first place

True, true. I'm just thinking that a lot of people may have the same reaction to this price. In which case it will not effectively drain dilithium out of the economy.
Let's say someone has 1.5 million dil on hand... they could buy one of these each for five characters... or convert to zen and get a T6 ship account unlocked... or five or six choices from the captain-race and uniform unlocks, all account-unlocked....
I'd say it is aimed squarely at people who have no particular interest in spending the dil on anything else right now.
The big thing that I hate about vanity shields, though, is the lack of a preview mechanic. There are a couple I think I'd want on certain ships but the wiki is not kept up to date on vanity shields.

I might grab a section 31 shield for my section 31 themed toon I made recently, but other than that I've never really been impressed with most of the vanity shields tbh.

Look at it this way. They didn't repeat the mistake they made with the 4 outfits they used to have in the DL Store. 1 mil+ for the Ent MACO?
Honestly its a lot more reasonable. And based on how the blog is worded, this is a test to see how it will work, and they're testing multiple things at once.
How popular it will be to be able to buy a vanity shield outright
Getting a feel for where the right price will be.
I don't think they're going to drop the price as it has been pointed out to be a bit above the equivelent of a C-Store uniform unlock, as well as the current economic situation. This is a DL sink, and one that so far looks to be pretty popular. They may decide to rotate the selection with each release considering we don't have the full menu of vanity shields. Hell... they may even outright put the less popular ones up permanently. I don't know. But as Space Barbie is the true endgame, this is going to get lots of bites. Might tick off the people selling Vanity Shields for a bit, but honestly I'd prefer a few angry EC sellers to having a dead DL economy.
Nice idea but not too willing to throw my dilithium away willy nilly. As others have stated a "try before you buy" would be nice before such a substantial purchase.
There's a Tailor for characters that offers "try before you buy" with uniforms so why not for our starships?
Otherwise we have to search the internet searching for the right vanity shield on the right starship & find that combination that we also want or we're gambling again with a purchase.

The difference between the tailor and vanity shields is that we're not equipping items in the tailor. As Vanity Shields are an actual item that affects the look of your ship and not an unlock... its probably mechanically harder to do a preview. Add in the fact that not every item affects appearance... we'd be looking at potential bugs if they tried without any serious testing because someone tried to preview the look of something that doesn't come with visuals.
For now we'll probably have to settle for various preview pics that have been made over time, and any preview videos.

I can understand if it's different in-game mechanics making it more difficult, but Cryptic would be serving us players & themselves better if there was a link showing the vanity shields on various starships. The whole seek out on the internet & hope & pray to find the right vanity shield on the right starship wanted may not even have a result & it's Cryptic that has all those resources. Perhaps not a video but just screen-shots would suffice, but given Cryptic's gambling mechanics I'm not thrilled at more gambling purchases & hoping it looks like I like, but I think the actual price per vanity shield is reasonable given their origins.
I'm not even sure what's in the dilithium store to buy from memory but if Cryptic was really wanting to help the current dilithium situation recover I'd think more than a meek -20% would be offered.
Also, a big concern I just read is: the possibility of Cryptic having all of us buy these then later on this will become a Mudd's bundle which would be account-wide. That would just suck.
