Need help fighting Vaadwaur

mysterion69mysterion69 Member Posts: 12 Arc User
stuck in a mission right now where i'm supposed to fight off 4 waves of vaadwaur... except that they are all (at least a dozen ships) camping the spawn point, so as soon as i respawn, i'm dead. i can't even kill a single ship in the second wave before i die, again.

so, go ahead and explain how that's either fun or fair. go ahead. i'll wait.

irrelevant. even bad players should be able to progress through story content. really hard stuff requiring min/max builds should be reserved for fleet ops endgame content.

any game design philosophy that forces players to be perfect, just to progress through story content is flawed on a fundamental level.

im in a t6 and all my gear is Mk XII blue or better. using every defensive buff i have still doesn't get me through 10 seconds of those vaadwaur cruisers dropping those blue spacial charges on my spawn point.

i just don't see how anyone can legitimately tell me that's a fair or fun game mechanic.

By the time you reach the Vaadwaar missions you *should*:

A: have enough experience knowing how to play the game and

B: have a high enough level ship and gear (that you got as mission rewards, not min/max fleet gear)

that you *should* be able to complete the missions. That said, they are admittedly one of the harder enemy groups in the game for many players, so it's understandable you might need some advice in tactics against them.

However, enemy ships should NOT be camping at a spawn point. If that is happening that is either a bug or bad design from whoever made that mission.

Please outline your build for us, so that we may be able to help determine why the Vaadwaur are so painful for you. Weapons, consoles, BOff Powers... the works.
We can help you, but we need to know what we're working with in order to provide more than just basic general help.

Also, there comes moments in many MMOs where a buddy or teammate comes in handy. There may be a few reasons why your build or ship is causing problems, but in a few cases you can always ask for a fleet mate to join you on a difficult mission... Even Kirk didn’t do everything by himself...

Also, I have heard that a few of the Vaadwaur are OP and somehow got missed on the “scaling” aspect. But that’s heresay.

I have been playing since 2012 and I don’t like the Vaadwaur...

Ya know probably most of the people responding here have cursed the Vaadwaur at one time or another. We first encountered them using Tier 5 ships and the same Mk XII gear that you are using. They used to be a lot harder but can still present quite the challenge particularly when caught out of position.

If you are getting blue spacial charges on your spawn point or at any other time the only reasonable course of action is to get out of danger immediately using full throttle plus evasive maneuvers and nibble at them from the sides. Other abilities like brace for impact or auxiliary to the structural integrity field might help while leaving the area.

For what it's worth I had to do the same thing (use evasive maneuvers and get out of harms way very quickly) when testing out a new Vaadwaur patrol earlier this year (Satellite Defense - Kelsid System).

The fact that I was out of position was nobody's fault but my own. These are the sort of lessons playing the missions teach you over time. Things get better with practice. I hope you keep at it.

Don't talk to me of the fires of Delta Risin'... I was there man... Delta Risin' changes you... You have no idea man!

Joking aside, I was actually there when Delta Rising launched, T6 ships were scarce, and reaching the new level cap meant grinding your tail off in patrols like there was no tomorrow. The Vaadwaur were EVIL!
I had a build that was able to hold its own in the old Elite, which is probably equivelent to the current Advanced. The Vaadwaur turned me into swiss cheese so many times. Drove me insane as my previously badass Assault Cruiser Refit was now not so badass. Even after I picked up a T6 Guardian Cruiser, the Vaadwaur were nasty.

Also Sci Team clears that placate the Artillery ships use when you knock them down enough to trigger their GTFO button.

What everyone seems to be missing, because nobody actually takes the time to think, is that when you respawn, all your power levels reset to 0 and take several seconds to come to full power.

That means almost no weapon damage. No shield hardness. No engine power.

If you respawn into a bunch of VAADWAUR camping a spawn point, you are going to get bent over backwards.

All of my gear is MK-15 gold, with a great boff and doff setup, and if I spawned into a bunch of Vaadwaur with no power levels, I would have trouble getting out of it.

Delta Rising was unnecessarily difficult. This game has difficulty options, and is supposed to be a casual mmo. On Normal difficulty in a casual game, a casual player should not be having problems like this.

As for the specific issue about the Vaadwaur camping the spawn point, that sounds to me like a bugged mission. One that will likely never get fixed, because bugs don't get fixed in this game.

With respect I don't think those who have responded are missing a thing.

A lot of us managed to complete the same missions prior to Cryptic reducing npc damage several times and did so with some Mk 12 gear and in-game drops.

If there's a new bug then by all means let's identify it but after playing most missions dozens of times on as many characters over quite a few years I can't say that game play difficulty while levelling and playing missions needs any adjusting.

Lot's of things get easier as you learn and progress your character.

I did that whole mission chain with a Kor BoP and blue gear. It's not the easiest but I did enjoy myself.

Not sure what the OP is on about tbh

that's what i had to do. there was no way i was getting through that mission solo.

Yeah but I was never using blue mismatched gear facing the Vaadwaur. I already had an established character. And even my Level 12 toons have Ultra rare equipment that I am upgrading as they level....

I see the Vaadwaur as one of those pillars in the game. Points in the game/story that new players reach where the game asks "How much have you learnt? How much have you improved? How far will you go?"

I think the same of the Voth, Iconians, and the Romulan DD in the early start :) amongest others.

All new players reach these points where they need to look inward towards themselves. As well as allows them to ask others for advice or help. Everyone was new OP, so dont be afraid to ask for help and take the help of the several individuals who have offered it above.

However, I will say one thing. The Vaadwaur arent OP, they are not bugged. They require tactics and foresight instead of the usual "Charge ahead and spam spacebar"

The start of Delta Rising was actually a pretty fantastic time for drain builds. With how obscenely inflated their stats were, it was pretty great to just delete half their health by taking their shields offline. Likewise disabling engines on Vaadwaur was a pretty effective way to kill their high speed/high defense value.

It's pretty rough to use drain these days though; npc drain resistances are grossly excessive. Drain is probably the least forgiving playstyle to run right now; it's min/max or don't bother. Control is actually quite strong right now though. With how high stats scale with current mk levels, you can get some really good returns on things like confusion duration - which both keeps friendlies from taking damage and increases how quickly mobs die(because they channel all their damage at each other). Plus, when you have 'annoying'(elachi) encounter groups that like to do things like spam disables, confusion means they throw all those disables on each other instead of you. It's criminally underappreciated in the current meta(probably because it doesn't pad an individual's stats).

Not sure which mission is the problem. Is it possible that the enemy was drawn into the respawn area by either immediately shooting at them or using a gravity well without first leaving the area of respawn thus causing them to camp there?

Vaudwaar are an issue of tactics, not build. They use big very powerful booms in tricobalts and artillery barrages. But you can move out of the way of all of them, and that is the way to get past them, put more power to engines use evasive maneuvers, use emergency power to engines or whatever else you need to do to escape and keep moving. You also need to quickly make your primary targets their drones and ships that hold you in place.

Also yes, Vaudwaar are harder than they were originally. Partially because of scaling, but also because of the changes to AOEs vs mines/destructible torps. A grav well or CSV would destroy their mines and torps easily, now they don't do anything to them and you're not likely to actually be able to destroy them before they hit you.
