is it possible to do a turret build?

jim625jim625 Member Posts: 907 Arc User
Made a new fed tac toon and once I've finished grinding some gear and done with the rep systems I really want to try out the turret build with 360 arc but is it possible to give them a faster recharge rate?

they nerf'd turrets a while back... but yes you can still do one... best to use cruiser for 8 slots of pew pew. are you gonna rely on procs, innate from weapon or from consoles?

Sound like you're after "firing cycle haste". There are a number of way to get it; the most popular is probably the starship trait from the Morrigu Warbird.

Turret builds are possible and even fun to fly. I've done them before myself.
Now a LTS and loving it.

Turrets on a t5 science spamming vo'quv was how I used to roll in the past..its why to this day I want a turret fire at will ability for a phalanx interceptor type look, creating a wall of cannon bolts around the ship

With the heavy turrets (if you can stand rainbow builds) due to rep you can easily load up a ship with heavy turrets to create a quite enjoyable 'buzzsaw' build thats pretty effective for cannon users who can't handle high speed/turn escorts and their ilk considering heavy turrets have decent damage amongst 360 weapons

Did an all turret build once on a Science vessel. Just to see if it could be done. It worked decently. If I would have spent the time and resources on it, I think it would have been very effective.

Full turret-builds have one cool advantage that benefits the most sluggish ships: Neither your auto-attacks, nor CRF and CSV have to be aimed, ever.

You could make a pretty hefty protonic polaron turret build before they changed procs to work only per cycle, not per shot. I don't know if that still works.

Believe it or not, I recommend Turret Builds to new players that are having a hard time.

Why? Because in the current state of the game, they're fine for normal and even advanced content and they could not be easier to play. You don't have to worry about positioning, you just fly into enemies and spam away. Use something like Emergency Power to Engines with Evasive Maneuvers to keep moving as fast as you can.. keep your speed up for the defensive bonus and just vomit turret fire everywhere. It's not only viable.. it's actually quite fun.

I definitely would NOT recommend it for Elite content. You might even have a bit of a slog doing Patrols on Elite because the overall damage output is just not going to equal what you would get from a pure beam boat or a 'proper' Ship running Cannons. But in Normal/Advanced you can already put out damage that is so far above what you need, that dialing it back for the sake of ease and fun is not a problem at all. I sometimes run an Aux2Bat Turret Boat on a Fleet Eclipse Intel Assault Cruiser. You can find the build here.

Not suggesting you do this of course, that's a lot of resources to put into a turret build.. but a variation of it based on what you have available. The Aux2Bat layout keeps your cooldowns at Global and if you use the trait Withering Barrage you can pretty much keep Scatter Volley going all the time. Yes, it limits your cone to 90 degrees but they can fire from any angle so you don't have the normal limitation of having them in front of you. Not to mention, it looks pretty cool when you're just vomiting turret fire from every direction while moving as fast as you can in and out of groups of enemies. It's fun and it's super easy to play.

It is both possible and awesome!

I actually tried it out on a T6 B'rel BoP...it's amazing, you can fly around at insane speeds weaving in and out of enemy ships but constantly hitting your target with CRF spam. Not to mention being able to ALWAYS get flanking damage since it doesn't matter what angle you are flying around behind the enemy you are hitting them with turrets so you can do anything you have to to stay behind them and still be hitting.

A close option to the all turrets is to use single cannons on the front...you lose some arc but it's still 180 degrees and does more damage, then keep turrets on the rear.
I use an all polaron cannon/turret/morpho polaron torp build on my T5 JH carrier and it's amazing, can chew through anything fast.

I have a build for that on my Galaxy-X. It has nine turrets: one in each weapon slot plus the Automated Defense Turret console. For extra fun, I toss on the Point Defense System Console from the Akira. So, for a limited time it is running ten turrets.

I like to play around with it from time to time. It won't be winning any DPS awards, but that should not be a goal for such a ship. It is just machinegunny fun, spitting tons of death pellets out in to the space all around it. Plus, when an enemy flies around in front of it, they will find a Phaser Lance waiting for them.

It’s possible but it’s recommended you use a carrier with 2 hangars, at least 4 tac slots and if you can 8 weapon slots. Fed side, silik ghemor discoprise with advanced jem’hadar fighters using superior Area denial and scramble fighters will more than make up the damage difference.

Back in the day I ran a mirror vo’quv with b’rel frigates and all turrets and a ferengi missile launcher. It was the Galactica in name and practice.

There is a thread here somewhere titled "Drinking the Protonic Kool Aid" there are some turret build layouts and suggestions in there which are very good.

The disco consoles give a good cannon+crit bonus to rainbow.

I'm wondering about a similar build when/if we get a T6 KDF carrier

Turret B'rel? That's just crazy enough to sound like fun

One of my builds for my maquis raider is a mix of turrets and omni and 180 degree missiles, with high speed and a super low turning radius so I can just loop around up close to my target at max speed and take advantage of the traits that add damage for being close to your target and the pilot spec adding damage for max speed, plus miracle worker's mixed armament synergy and narrow sensor bands.

I have a lot more fun playing that than I've ever had playing any sort of heavy cannon build. Everything is almost always in the firing arc of all my weapons which makes up for all the damage I'm not inflicting on something I haven't turned to face yet. The only alternative builds are single cannons instead of turrets and/or a mine on the back.

Also been looking around to see if there is a weapon haste cycle for turrets

oh and got some duty officers to reduce the time for cannon abilitys

In the build I linked, the 2pc from the Trilithium Laced Weaponry set grants haste. I am also using the trait Heart of Sol for the same reason. If you have the Bajoran Interceptor, the D.O.M.I.N.O. console also grants weapon haste. I use all of these on my turret boat.

As for Duty Officers, if you can go with an Aux2Bat setup, then 3 Blue or Purple Recharge Variant Technicians should keep your bridge officer abilities at Global for cooldown.

It’s been many years since I used turrets. Can you use 6 heavy turrets of different damage types or is it a limit of 2 heavy turrets? I kind of like the idea of making a heavy turret rainbow build for fun and stacking haste as the base fire rate is slower then normal turrets. Not 100% sure how many heavy turrets there are, will have to look into it tomorrow.

Threw together a fleet B'rel turret build with spiral disruptors, dprm and domino. It doesn't clear the same way my beam boat builds do, but they are pretty mini-maxed with sets however it was bloody fun.

I'm wondering now about tinkering and expanding the idea.

There is not an equip limit like there is with omni beams, if that's what you are asking.

Most "special" turrets are parts of sets though and you can only use one copy of each such turret. No limit on craftable ones though.
That's a shame so we can only fit 2 heavy turrets at a time? I was even thinking about a heavy weapon build even though its sub optimal but its not looking possible to fit enough heavy weapons to make it really viable.

Why two? Between mission sets and rep sets there are five different sets that include a heavy turret. Chronometric Calculations and Morphogenic armaments (both polaron) from missions. Counter Command Ordinance (phaser/disrupter), Obfuscated Strategies (tetryon) and Task Force Ordinances (polaron) from the Rep sets.

You would not be able to fit all five full sets, but partial sets would be possible, and if you do polaron there are three heavy turrets just for that energy type. The Obfuscated Strategies one the set is not useful for a turret build so you don't have to worry about anything but the turret itself for instance. The Morphogenic Amrmamants you would want at least two items to get the recharge haste though, and the CCO set probably three if you can jam it all in.

Thanks I missed most of those. Being focused on minelayers and hanger pets for years I haven't been following turrets anywhere near well enough. When Counter Command Ordinance came out all those years ago I think was the last time I used them.

I wonder will there be any real difference between a turret build or heavy turret build? I guess if there are 5 heavy turrets I could go 5 rear heavy turrets and heavy weapons in the front just for the theme.

to steal from the turret B'rel idea.. the flight deck akira, so you have the pets.. but I was thinking just for fun, the ols school point defense console, and the akira photon torpedo point defense.. and I think there is even another point defense console out there from the phoenix boxes.. sure only once every 2 minutes but Lord it would be fun to see
