It is getting to the point with me that the Deletion of characters is getting itchy. I really am finding the Need to just have and want one character over the couple 65's I have and a few lowbies. Truthfully if it happens they go to the glue factory I don't ever plan on wanting them back. This brings me to the fact that I deleted two already but a CSR asked if I wanted them back and I said sure. But turns out, I think I regret having them restore the characters. So now I have the conundrum of deciding how much I just want one character, I have Bad OCD with this. How many people out there are happy with just one character? one you know you will enjoy for a very long time? Is it even possible? I find now I am more jumping around than ever than before my characters were restored. Hmm not sure what to do in this case. Thoughts?

I used to have only one, then I decided I wanted one of each faction. I have mild OCD but keep it in check by only maxing my main (fed caitian) out, in terms of equipment, accolades, etc mostly things that are difficult or take a long time to acquire. Helps a lot if you set limits like that.
I made one character when I began playing back in 2012. Then, I kept adding, "just one more", lol. Suddenly, I had twelve characters and this game became a second job. Because I wasn't smart enough to just play one or two and only use the others when needed. Since I was a bit overwhelmed I deleted all but one char. Since then, I've only added chars I want to play and added another char as just a banker. Now I have eight and it feels like the correct number.
I've no idea why anyone would want or need to max out the number of characters this game allows. But if having the maximum number of characters allowed is how someone enjoys playing STO, who am I to say they are doing it wrong?
A six year old boy and his starship. Living the dream.
Not me. I have at least 15. I don't know how I would even play this game with a single character. There are 3 factions, 3 career paths, and hundreds of different ships that can all be built with different focuses.
At the very basic level, there's no way I'm going to take the same skills for a captain destined for science ships as one that is going to fly escorts. They have to be different.
Trying hard here to keep my mains to 3: Fed, Rom, KDF.
I gave up on the Rom-Sci since it's become more redundant with Fed-Sci and Rom ship access, and I don't mind having 2 Tac mains as it's become equally enjoyable and capable to Sci in Sci ships even, and I don't like Eng.
The support mains are just that, filling in the missing Sci and Tac across factions, and got one Eng support main but KDF-aligned and not motivated to do a Fed or Fed-aligned one. Jem'hadar are really cool, but only for ground combat which I don't enjoy.
At some point all the grind makes the bit of fun not even worth it, and the insane amount of time wasted, so always best to cut back or keep it to a minimum.
Reason I stick to the 3 is there are some unique ships to the 3 factions, and still more being released.
I have 1 Klingon. Maxed out on fleet creds, maxed rep. sys, 10 sets of various energies all epic centered around a science build. I tried a secondary starfleet character but with all the work now i gave up. I am happy with 1. Fleet building keeps me busy enough.
make sure you have no useful doffs \ boffs on those toons ,check your i.g.mail before terminating ... if you have ocd ,then nothing can be done about it! 1char it is.
My OCD drives my behavior. Only been playing a year. I started with 1 Fed tac and played that for about 3 months to learn the game. I started getting creamed at the dysons sphere and started googling how to get better and started reading these boards. Found out about dil and ec farming,,and how to make a good build. Created a Klingon tac, Rom sci, and jem eng to farm,,,,,, MY OCD KICKS IN
I can’t use the toons for farming, I HAVE to play and level up each of them because I like the game. So I started playing each in rotation until the holidays when I had more time to play and it started really bugging me the story for Fed, rom, and jem were so much the same. I have since stopped playing the other factions and just focus on my Six Feds, 2 each class
I have 14 characters, so far only my main as completed all the story missions so far. I usually play with which ever one I more invested in at the time. My current one is a Liberated Borg engineer, who I have flying the legendary Intrepid.
I had only one for years. Never wanted to invest the time and coin to level another. Then a week ago I realised I had started off a temp agent ages ago. Some of the spec superior traits look useful, so I've level it up to 65 and working on the specializations, but even with exp boosters the process is far too slow to wait to get 90 points! so I doubt I'll finish it as it'll to take months to do, and do I really need the superior traits for my main that bad. No.
Edit:
Actually after reading the Temp Recruit rewards I'm not even sure if it is obtainable after the event. After reaching certain landmarks I haven't received any of the rewards for hitting lvl 10, 20 etc. Lolz, I guess that makes it much easier..."DELETE".

AoY characters should be just as functional now as they always were, so deleting it might not be that great of an idea since even if you do not use it after getting everything in the transponder any other characters you might make will benefit from visiting your local temporal officer because of your AoY one.
As for number of characters, I only had one for years, but that was only because I was curious about the game after having played Champions Online for years, made a character, and then the game's incredibly clunky WASD ship steering combined with the ongoing hassle caused by the merge with Perfect World somehow periodically corrupting the combined account credentials I left STO, (also Champions, and Perfect World) as not being worth the effort to keep fixing. If I had known about the mouse based two-button-down analog steering I probably would have stayed (but there was not even a hint of it in the tutorial) and kept up the customer service fight until it was fixed.
I tried again when my Steam group went though an STO phase and am the only one who stayed long. After a month or so I even went though customer service to see about getting my old account untangled and this time it worked
Anyway, when I returned I tried to keep it to just one of each faction/department combination for most of the first year, but then made three Delta recruits despite that, then a few others to test some ideas, then Gama recruits came along (I only made one toad and cannot stand to play it on the ground so I stuffed it into a vacc suit and only use it for the crafting and admiralty rewards for my actually playable characters and for some space stuff), and then there was AoD and by that time I had shifted from trying to maintain "mains" to just having a pool of characters to play as the mood strikes me. At this time I have 27 characters (well 26 and the horneytoad anyway) across two accounts (my unSteam'ed Steam account one and my original one).
Most of them are level 65 but they still have at least some reputations and whatnot still to work on and I am in no particular hurry to max them out in everything.
in the last 2 yrs i have deleted and restored 5 characters all over again cause despite the time restraints for the progression of other things that interfere with mission running. After doing some math between current dil flow around my play style plus the monthly tfo, i have decided that it does not support even 7 characters, so the descision tonight is to remove all but 7 characters. The rest will be removed and discontinued. As to the rest, i have at least 1 per every damage type in the game and that will stay. other than new factions coming out in game, no new toons will be created on my account from this day forward!

None of the other recruitment events require the event to be running for it to work. You also have to claim the rewards to get them, they aren't automatic.
As for 90 skill points, that isn't that hard, just get up to 65 and run admiralty every day for the Federation tour. You'll eventually get it. It also helps to try and do endeavors with that character, not just for the random skill boxes, but the xp for completing the endeavor.
For years now, the only new thing to do in game has been playing the new episodes when they get released - once per faction, to experience all the (absolutely non-existent) diversity in dialogue options and stuff like that.
With that in mind, though I've always had more than one character, now the thing that makes this game fun for me is to create new characters and use them to try out new ships (or even old ones but with different set ups) and new builds.
I still have my very first character which, a part from being my main crafter, is also my "GW for the win!" character.
I have tac officers on science ships because reasons.
I have sci officers on pilot escorts.
I have eng officers flying on whatever they can get their hands on.
I experiment, because I'm to lazy to combat the many bugs that makes trying a new build on an already perfectly functional and viable character an absolute pain, and if I find something that really works I either have a new "main" or I export the build to another character so I can start experimenting all over again without creating a new toon.
All in all, I have just as many characters as I want to play, because those that don't get played often? Well, they're not going anywhere and when, or if, I find myself wanting to play them I can.

I have 2 "mains" one specced for ground, one for space. I can't be bothered to do all that grinding on reps, dil, etc on more then that. You players with like 10+ toons, I salute you
While I can see limiting or avoiding creating new alts, I don't see the point of deleting existing ones on whom you've spent time and energy. If it's too time and/or in-game resource consuming to play all your alts every day, focus effort on one and leave the others for occasional gameplay or for the future when you might become bored and want to try something different.
Entara Nix (65 fed joined trill), Cmdr Deanna Troi HR (65 Betazoid FC TNG Crew and Sector 001 battle fleet), Fleet Admiral Taela Shanthi (65 fed human tactical), Aex Rotherot (65 Starfleet Academy video game crew SNES and PC versions), T'Vrell (65), Daimon Tarr (65 Fed Ferengi awaiting becoming a TNG ferengi whenever the (^&( they release the TNG ferengi uniforms), General Ogoun (65 TOS Kli converted to 2409 kli tutorial first officer), Creenak (65 2409 rom), Captain Kirk (65 fed eng awaiting conversion), 2 65 Jem'Hadar (one fed one kli), Emerald Empress Melani Di'ann (65 Orion), Hodj Thraak (65 Gorn), Dredj'Nel (65 Naausicaan), Bish Amon'ten Tohil (65 Kli), Commander Charvanek (65 Tos Rom from Enterprise Incident), Admiral JP Hanson (65 fed Wolf 359 fleet), Admiral Necheyev (65 Fed tac human TNG/DS9 admiral), Divatra (65 2409 Romulan), Captain Masc P Taggart (65 2409 fed tutorial captain), Elisa Flores (65 Fed from the future), Captain Kadek (65 Klingon fed tutorial captain that kills taggart), Commander Sela (53 Romulan set during klingon civil war including the durass sisters and Toral), Captain Beverly Picard (48 All good things please update the Pasteur model), and 26 lower level characters including Veril, Lt Cmdr Jadzia Dax from DS9 season 2, Vedek Krin, Morgan Bateson, Captain Jurlek (original commander of bop in kli tutorial), kolez, number one, commodore ross (captain of the constitution class guarding drozana station in the past), Warlord Ch'gren, Zarva, Mirror Elisa Flores, Governor Worf (Worf from All Good things), Franklin Drake, and Admiral William T Riker (from All Good Things) among others.
I have many characters. Made one of each profession, one for each faction/subfaction, & one for each Recruit Event. BUT... for the last couple years I've only really played on my main.
[The others are pretty much there for Holiday event doffing, daily account endeavors (for example... Toon D has polarons, so I'll use that one for the daily endeavor to do polaron damage) and to do Rich Dil claims when Dil bonus weekend comes around.]
I think I had one character for... however many days it took to get to level 8 on my first character. Way back then you needed to have a level 8 Fed to make a KDF character. So it was a few days at most.
I usually only play one character over a given period of time, but I have several all with different themes cause limiting to just one gets boring. I have my main fed, my TOS fed, my Disco/JJ hybrid fed, my TNG themed fed, my delta recruit which is an aliengen Vorta with Jem'Hadar boffs and ships, my Romulan, my Fed Engineer (haven't played this one in years), and my Fed Science (just started playing that one again for the first time since DR). Also have a klink, Jem'Hadar, and Fed Cardassian, all of which I never actually play.
So that's 11 characters, 4 of which I've had since launch.
I must say I have a main and a pair of secondary toons. They are only there for my doff reserves. I don't even play with them. So I guess I'm in the minority playing with one toon.
I have one main character and a bunch of alts I don't care for as much. Mostly because of the time it takes to actually gear things up in this game. That said phoenix boxes are a nice way to quickly upgrade ship gear. Also using gear that's account bound tends to make it easier to change things around like crafted gear.
To explore STO you need to create 6 characters however you only need to maintain 2, one from Fed and Kdf side. 2 main "look at signature" one for each side. The best is one fed and one Rom aligned with kdf. The other 4 characters I have deleted ones the story lines have merged. You tend to miss out on fun if you play a character that not max in everything. Sci, Tac or eng does not really matter but it's better to have 2 different ones for flavor.
I tend to keep just 2 so i can explore both side ships and story lines. The rest i will delete because it is distracting. Jem I created just for the story then immediately deleted it after the story finish (ewww creepy). Most players that have many characters normally engage in role play. I role play, once in a while but not with other character but through different costume.
I would like to get a 3rd main but every time i look at the rep, r&d and etc..etc stops me from creating a 3rd main (too much work and time). The 3rd main is for the last flavor and I do not really have a alien character that allow me to adjust the size of the character. Maxing out that character when there is a recruitment event makes it easier.
Not me, I have 8 and I think that's enough. On a non-event day I usually play about 6 of them at Dyson Ground Battlezone to get Dyson marks to cash in for DIL later so that I can cash that in for ZEN. It gets rough having this uncontrollable need to play them all every day.
I log into a character, Talk to Commander Arnold, go to my assigned area and kill Voth, shut down 2 sections, aide in other sections, help defeat the big dino, talk to Commander Arnold again to have it restart 20 hours later. Then I refine 8000 dil, collect 20 of the Duty Officer Assignments that are finished (for slow progressive XP), (use to Admiralty as well), R&D, start up another round of 20-21 Duty Officer Assignments for the next day.
Log out
Log into new Character and repeat.
The 8th (new) character might Dyson or may get a quick 20 Duty Officer Assignment depending on their needs (This is my KDF Klingon officer)
Finally, my main TOS captain where I use him as primary for other tasks at the time. e.g. events and normal game play.
It's nice reading that other people have a type of OCD when it comes to this game.
It's gotten so bad that I'd borrow some EC or DIL from one character to use on my main, and then when my main would gain it back, I'd pay back the other toon because I literally feel I owe it back to them....WHEN the main is using it to help out all the others...
I just couldn't see this game being played by one character. There's just too much to explore with different factions.
