So what do you call your ships?

fallenkezef#4581 fallenkezef Member Posts: 644 Arc User
I'm curious as to what people name their ships and why.

My Starting B'rel is IKS Cossack, my Kor is IKS Thunder Child and, when she arrives, my Khitomer will be IKS Warspite.

Thunder Child because I have loved War of the Worlds since I first read it as a young teen and the others for my love of WW2 naval history and unrepentent nationalist pride. Going to name all my ships, as I get them, after WW2 British warships.

My main character's ship is the USS Tun Tavern NCC-1775, with the backstory being that, with the exception of the medical personnel, the captain and crew are all MACOs. (the US Marine Corps was born at Tun Tavern in Philadelphia on November 10th, 1775)

My TOS toon is flying a NX Refit (soon to be the new TMP Era Refit NX), the NX-04 Faith of the Heart. (The Enterprise season 1 and 2 versions of that song are my favorite Trek theme).

With my other characters I've struggled to find a good ship naming theme for.

Edit: I don't know if I'm going to keep using this name, but this morning something made me think of the Cold War for some reason and I decided to name my TNG Film era captain's ship the USS Arkhipov, named after Vasily Arkhipov who cast the one vote that prevented the Russian submarine he was aboard at the time from launching a nuclear torpedo during the Cuban Missile Crisis, an action which would have undoubtedly triggered a nuclear war.

KDF character typically has Kilrathi ship names (Wing Commander) like IKS Thrak'hath.
Main has typical ship names, although current ship is USS Melchiott, named after a character from Valkyria Chronicles.
TOS Sci has several named after ships from Arpeggio of Blue Steel, currently flying USS Takao.
TOS Engie has several named after WW2 US Navy ships, currently flying USS Arizona.
Romulan Engie has a Legend of Zelda theme, currently flying RRW Farore, but does fly the SCS Gerudo at times.
And Discovery Sci has typical ship names, currently flying the USS Hornet.

I name my ships after whatever strikes my fancy at the moment.

A few current favorites of mine are:
    - I.R.W. Hastati. A Tal Shiar Adapted Battle Cruiser. Name comes from Latin. Hastati were the first line heavy infantry which Roman legions were built around.
    - U.S.S. Biloxi NCC-1699. A FT6 Buran. Pierre Le Moyne founded the French colony here in 1699. I use the same name on another character's JJPrise.
    - U.S.S. Helena Caine NCC-0620. A JJTrek Intel Dreadnought Cruiser. Yup. Big BSG fan here. Nice to see Ensign Ro finally got the posting she deserved, lol.
    - I.K.S. Tzeentch. A T6 Catfish. Always liked the Catfish but always had a reason not to buy it right now. Cryptic took care of this with the prize from this year's QWW. And TYVM, Cryptic! Yes, I enjoy the tabletop version of WH40K as well. Flown by my KDF SciGuy, she's kitted out to be a Science AoE ship.

Nice idea about using names of WW2 Royal Navy ships. RN has always had a gift for good names for ships. I may have to "borrow" it.

I go with obscure acts of courage.
My T6 Fleet Pathfinder is called the U.S.S. Osowiec.
Named for the Attack of the Dead Men in July 1915

Amy and Sapph's ships are named after Pokemon, Disney characters/locations, and wolves.
Destiny and Steven's ships are named after dragons.
Mathaye's ships are named after Expanse novels and ships.

I named my temporal light cruiser "USS Hoagland", named after one of my personal heroes, Richard C. Hoagland, and NCC-1991, the year I become really drawn to the extra terrestrial topic.

I named one of my characters' Odyssey-Class the U.S.S. DeForrest Kelley. My main commands the Ambassador-Class U.S.S. Victorious, named after the Aircraft Carrier HMS Victorious, which my grandad served on during the Malaysian/Indonesian Confrontation (history refers to it as the latter, but my Grandad always called it the former).

I have a number of toons; generally, each one's ships are named fora given theme. The craft below, for instance, a T6 Yorktown-class, belongs to my main, whose ships are named for famous Terran scientists (with a special attention to neurology); Lorna Wing was the woman who, while working on her psychology doctorate in the '70s, unearthed the long-neglected work of Karl Asperger on what he (and his colleague, Leo Kanner) called "atypical autistic psychosis". Today, thanks to her work, it's better known as "Asperger's syndrome", although it was folded into the overall Autism Spectrum Disorder diagnosis as of DSM-V.

One toon was created and named after I'd first been through the DSC tutorial, during which you meet Cadets Lee and Lifeson, and are compared to Cadet Peart (with the second-highest IQ in their class!). For those who are unaware, those are the famous members of the band Rush; this toon was then named for John Rutsey, the band's first drummer who was forced to drop out of the band when they hit it big for health reasons. His ship, a T6 Europa-class, is named USS Rocinante for the ship in the Rush song "Cygnus X-1" (which came in two parts - "Book I: the Voyage", on A Farewell To Kings, and "Book 2: Hemispheres", on Hemispheres). I may either rename it or move him to a Khitomer-class when I get that ship, though, as it's come to my attention that there's also a Rocinante on the TV show The Expanse (which I haven't seen). If I do this, I'd probably name the ship Lerxst, one of the nicknames Alex Lifeson picked up on the road.

My Romulan former merc, tr'Sevel, flies a Bajoran Interceptor named Nei'rrh, which in Diane Duane's Rihannsu novels is a small venomous bird native to ch'Rihan ("Romulus" to you). I imagine the derivation is obvious...

"Cygnus X-1" is a long song, more than an album side in length (and I guess I'm showing my age here, huh? ).

Spoiler-tagging the description, so I don't bore the uninterested:
"Cygnus X-1, Part I: the Voyage", more commonly known as just "Cygnus X-1", is the final track on the Rush album A Farewell To Kings, and tells of a man who for reasons unrevealed decides to build a starship, the Rocinante (named for the woman Don Quixote fixated upon), and fly her to the black hole Cygnus X-1, where the ship is drawn in by the singularity's gravity.

"Cygnus X-1, Part II: Hemispheres" is an entire album side to itself, and presents an allegory for the theory of the bicameral mind. The first parts tell of how Men first chose to follow the promises of Apollo, God of Reason, but found their lives empty and purposeless because reason was all they had. They then sent representatives across "the Bridge of Death" to seek out Dionysius, the God of Love, who showed them a life of nothing but feeling. This served them well enough - until winter fell, catching them unprepared.

The next section tells of the wars that happened, both across the world and within the hearts of Men, between the extremes of the two sides, with a sad refrain telling how those wars divided their souls into "blinded hemispheres". But then we hit the end of Part IV:

Some who did not fight brought tales of old to light,
      My
Rocinante sailed by night on her final flight,
To the heart of Cygus' fearsome force we set our course,
Spiraled through that timeless space to this immortal place...

(Apparently Cygnus X-1 is the "Bridge of Death" mentioned earlier.)

In the next section, the protagonist awakens on the plains of Olympus, and is awed and terrified by the sight that greets him - the god-battle between Apollo and Dionysius, both seeking dominion over Men. His voiceless scream catches their attention, and they demand to know his story.

      Apollo was astonished,
      Dionysius thought me mad,
But they heard my story further
And they wondered and were sad,
      Looking down from Olympus
On a world of doubt and fear,
      Its surface splintered into
      Sorry hemispheres

The gods consult between themselves, and come back with a pronouncement: The protagonist is appointed Cygnus, the God of Balance, and his task is to mediate between the other two.

      The final verse:
We can walk our road together
      If our goals are all the same;
We can run alone and free
If we pursue a different aim.
Let the truth of Love be lighted,
Let the love of Truth shine clear -
      Sensibility,
      Armed with sense and liberty,
With the heart and mind united
      In a single perfect sphere.

So many toons, so many names. I don't have any themes, I just name them whatever takes my fancy or if the ship reminds me of something,

      Such as

Jacob (my main) has a Rezreth he's named the Scorpion.

Veena(A newer F2P toon) Named her Elachi ship the Tarantuala.

Stuff like that. If the ship reminds me of some creature, it's named for the creature. If they decide on a theme, I use that theme. One of my toons on the lifer acct was using constellations.
Now a LTS and loving it.
Just because you spend money on this game, it does not entitle you to be a jerk if things don't go your way.
I have come to the conclusion that I have a memory like Etch-A-Sketch. I shake my head and forget everything. :D

To make a long story short, I generally go with a variety of motifs for ship names. Some of my common motifs are: Musicians, songs, albums, and Transformers characters. Or, in the case of my Jem'Hadar toon that is named "Cheech'N'Chong", after Cheech and Chong songs, jokes and albums.

Ah heck, I'll give you all some examples:

      U.S.S. Cliff Burton, NX-6286
      D.V. Dave's Not Here
      I.K.S. Megatron
      U.S.S. Bumblebee, NX-84

Yes, I am fond of the NX prefix. As for numbers, I try to find a number that is somehow germane to the subject, such as 1984 being when Transformers came out, or when an album came out, or the birth - and death - years of a person.

      Examples:

      U.S.S. Frank Sinatra, NX-1598 (( 1915 - 1998 in this case ))
U.S.S. Metal Militia, NX-1083 (( the 10th song on an album that was released in 1983, "Kill 'Em All" by Metallica ))
Resident TOS, G.I. Joe, Transformers and hair metal fangirl.

And knowing is half the battle!

My Fleet - Main Character Admiral Jacob Grafton, based on upon the novel character from guy who created the Red October.

Regent Class - USS Courageous. NCC-46160 - Based upon the Borg video game (Excelsior Class)

Intrepid Class - USS Delta Wanderer NCC-74657 - The Delta Flyer's bigger cousin

Galaxy Class - USS Riker - NCC -30104 - This one is painfully obvious, Riker may have not gotten the chair, but this is the next best thing.

Akira Class - USS Thunderbolt - NCC-56134 - Named after the USS Thunderchild from Star Trek First Contact and the TNG novels.

Ambassador Class - USS Yar - Tasha saved the Federation from a disastrous war and everyone remember's Sela, but never the poor soul who sacrificed herself for the timeline, in more ways then one.

Actually, during Best of Both Worlds he did have The Chair, and even 4 pips on his collar, and he was officially made a full time Captain of the USS Titan after Nemesis.
Riker was just notorious for refusing promotions because he wanted to stay aboard Enterprise.

I tend to name my ships after a number of different things - famous ships, astronauts, explorers, places I've lived, a member or two of my family, so on. In the last couple of years, right around when the Disco-ships started showing up, I ended up naming a number of them in reference to the lost expedition led by Sir John Franklin to the Northwest Passage in the Canadian Arctic.

The expedition's flagship, HMS Erebus, gets two namesakes, both Crossfields - one Federation, one Terran (for my Disco main and mirror-Disco, respectively), while the other ship, HMS Terror, got a Nimitz in the Federation Starfleet and a Styx dreadnought carrier in the Imperial Starfleet.

Franklin got a Pathfinder-class ship named for him, while his deputy, Francis Crozier, got (somewhat appropriately) a Reliant.

Sir James Clark Ross, who had taken the two ships (with Crozier as his deputy) to the Antarctic a couple of years before, has a Buran-class ship named for him.

And lastly, there was HMS Resolute, which was sent in the years afterward to try and find Franklin's ships after contact was lost, only to get stuck in the ice, abandoned (and this time, the crew survived), recovered by an American whaling ship and returned to Britain, and then broken up and turned into desks - including one used by the President of the United States (the one you might've seen the picture of JFK Junior peeking out from under it). With my recent addition of the Legendary bundle, I decided to make that my Disco-tution (or Disco-prise, if you prefer).

I call my primary ship the USS Providence. It's a Miranda-class, under the command of Lieutenant Thomas Armstrong (my primary character).

What I meant was the Chair of a Galaxy Class, which was what he really wanted. Given the choice between the Enterprise D and the USS Titan, which one would Riker pick? We both know he would pick the Enterprise D, she maybe older but the Titan is not the Enterprise he loved, not even the Enterprise E felt like home, it was always 1701-D

My Klingon warrior's ship is called "IKS Honor's blade", My Orion's ship is called "Siren's Song" and IIRC my Reman's ship was "shadowhawk" or something similar raptor themed anyway. The rest atm are just random names the ship came with so no real thought put into those.
