I jumped back in after several years away. I don't know where a damn thing is now. the game seems glitchy very glitchy. it did not used to be this way. I'm just not sure its worth my time to try to figure out this game again if its not very active. yea I can jump into fleet action stuff but that's all different to. I don't know what weps or what ships are meta now. its just confusing lol. so that being said fleets seem dead or not active. and mostly seems devoid of life other than sol system.

to. I run several different ships with different layouts and still have no problem doing any content I want to.
Yes, things have changed, but you should still be able to find your way around.
Also, just like other games some fleets/clans/guilds/whatever any particular game calls them, some are quite active while others are not, it is just a matter of asking around or watching the chat now and then to find them. My main (or the closest thing I have to one, I am a bit of an altaholic) is in a fleet that is quite active but one of my other often played characters always seems to be the only one of her fleet on, the only time I saw another member of that one was during the initial invite for example.
Build/Ship wise, the basics haven't changed. T5U can still be very viable at end game providing you put the effort into slotting consoles and powers that compliment each other. (Stick to one energy type and work towards Fleet Spire Locator consoles to buff that type)
Ask lots of questions. The academy portion of the forum and r/STObuilds have loads of knowledgeable people who will steer you in the right direction.

The game is very alive, and always has been. People do come and go, but there's always plenty of folk playing. One of the greatest benefits of this game is you can play without interacting with others, and believe me, many people prefer it. When you've played Random TFO's, you see how fast you get into queues. However, remember that this game is 24/7, so there will be less folk playing at 1pm GMT than there is at 8pm GMT onwards.

Nope it's dead. The fact you were able to log in was a fluke (as are these forums). It's all due to Internet lag...
PWE ARC Drone says: "Your STO forum community as you have known it is ended...Display names are irrelevant...Any further sense of community is irrelevant...Resistance is futile...You will be assimilated..."

Game is alive has managed to keep a constistant level of players too not that I have figures to prove that just always fills like there is plenty of people playing at weekends there is alot more people has thats when the servers tend to lag and rubberband the most lol, when it comes to META this and that I've always been that guy who says to ignore meta's and go for fun builds and theme builds as META builds to get the best DPS are boring and you end up chasing the next META build and ship that comes around... But TimberWolf on youtube has you covered for those type of builds aswell as fun builds too.
I knew you would say that, knowing you.
I noticed 2 major declines in # of players the past years. One was during the DR expansion and one after S13’s power balance checks. On both occasions Cryptic felt it smart to require players to invest (substantially) more into this title without rewarding it with any qualified content. Players needed to do so just to uphold the status quo which simply didn't offer enough "fun" considering the age of this game.
As that was clearly a step in the wrong direction Cryptic choose the other extreme by now supporting a zero effort mentality for us. All you need to do to progress characters is to log basically, cheers!
The result is that the majority of players don’t do much active stuff together anymore but they are there. See STO as a mmorpg with a strong solo feel if you will. If you don't mind that and hate happy mediums as much as Cryptic does welcome aboard.
Now if you excuse me, I know I should do some DPS somewhere but since I don't need to I'll be at the tailor watching Netflix instead. Something from the late roman period perhaps...

Agreed but I think the decline started before DR can't remember what update it was or even if it had a name but around the time they did the sandbox update that started the power creep on weapons and moving away from the holy-trinity balancing approach this made everything about chasing the DPS numbers and grinding reps which gets boring for most people after a week... before this approach content required a little team work and had challenge what was increased depending on the level you was attempting also using the noviety consoles that came with ships was completely viable back then which was fun lol
I still hold onto my opinion that love or hate it content built and balanced around the holy-trinity gave classes purpose and made end game content more interesting and fun to play being able to brute force everything with dps and having no real death penaltys or fail states is boring... When you look at other MMO's end game they have Raids, PvP and other activties that require team work and generally have challenge STO has none of this (pvp is just plain pointless in STO)
Without them doing something to normalize DPS and then starting to rebalance content around some of Role/Class system endgame in STO will always be a solo meta DPS of the season blitz queues. (normalizing DPS and rebalancing the classes would make pvp viable again too)
I think the reason we have never seen Cyptic try and do something about the power creep and DPS focus in the game is simple they think power sells so making a new powerful lockbox ship in their minds makes them money but star trek fans from my experience are collectors at heart and for most people that spend its about collecting the ships they like not the DPS power of the ship.
It is not the ship that ultimately determines the DPS, it's the equipment! Ships are just costumes. Whilst I do agree, in part, about trinity, the fact my Sci character can do insane damage is something that is good for the game. In fact, I find Tac captains the least 'versatile' in terms of ability.
As for PvP, sorry, but it's BAD for business in alot of cases and brings toxic players to the game.
We have 'raids' in the form of PvE queues, granted they are short, but that's because Cryptic won't give us long missions because of the AFK'ers that ruin the queues (I still hope for auto-kick), and those that would complain they were too long.
However, this game is still quite busy, and is in no danger of dying. No one player has any data that shows ANY player decline beyond the anecdotal and NO, Steam-Stats doesn't show any of this because it's an extreme minority of players that play using the Steam portal.
Na I don’t think this game is in danger of dying either. I just think that players are in constant danger of feeling that it does, you know? Reason seems to be that fewer and fewer players do what players tend to do in games like this one: Team up and have some fun!
Sure I can still force the issue by asking in a dozen channels for peeps to sing up for Binary Circuits, ask my friends for a pity-f.ck IGA or DPS the hell out of some quick space maps with the aid of some random leechers getting it to pop for me.
Wherever I look players simply seem to do all of that less and less and less. Not at all compared to how it was pre Delta Rising or pre season 13 or yea, I’m sorry to say it, when the rtfo system was new.
We know it’s not dead Jim, it just the hell feels that way and this is the reason why threads like this one keep on turning up. And there is no data for that needed at all. There would be no reason to ask if it's dead if it would not smell that way.

I get what you mean. I'm one of those players, who still after 8 years of playing, prefers to do things in solitary I do yearn for more involved team-play, but there is so much laziness/want it now attitude these days that Cryptic is just trying to find a balance that pleases the majority. It amazes me when people claim a 2 minute exercise is a grind, when literally every game ever made is a grind. What's the point in loading a game that gives you everything whilst you sit there doing nothing? That's why I dislike deliberate AFK'ing in this game.
That being said, the days of PvP-centric games is waning (I've been gaming since the late 70's) and I'm thankful STO didn't follow that model. You only need to look at ST:Alien Domain and Star Fleet Command to see how much people really hate the PvP aspects.
People wants to "play" STO in Youtube.. and that's still too much effort!
The internet is more glitchy nowadays than the game actually, and seems to be what is causing a lot of the problems. STO is actually one of the more stable games, for example in Elder Scrolls Online I have to have characters on both NA and EU servers because the connection very often drops and every one in ten or so drops I get locked out of the server it happened on for up to a few hours as the game figures out that I am not logged in anymore.
In STO that lockout has never happened for more than a few minutes (and even that only once or twice over the last two years) and most of the glitchiness is lag making button presses happen out of order or get missed.
Here I rarely have game-breaking glitches. Some rubberbanding, button presses not registering sometimes. Only every now and then do I have it so bad that I get kicked off and when that starts happening it's usually time to reset my router/inet.
