Character reset - money maker for Cryptic

Champions Online has the ability to 'reset' a character's powers, abilities, and stats by visiting the Powerhouse - essentially allowing that character to start 'fresh' without losing any experience (a Level 40 character stays Level 40). The cost is either a full respec token or a TON of in-game currency (global rep).

Why not have something like that here in STO, except make the cost Zen instead of in-game currency.

I have at least two characters I would love to reset and be more than happy to pay Zen to avoid deleting them and having to grind all the way through to Level 65 again. (Especially with one of my very first characters that I've had since launch- I'd hate to lose the creation date)

Seems like a win-win for everyone. Players can 'fix' characters without re-rolling them and Cryptic gets to make money.

Cryptic already provides a character reset token with EVERY SINGLE REP now. You can easily get your hands on 14 of them. How many more does one character need?

You also get retrain tokens while leveling up, including extra ones for lifetime subscribers. You can also buy tokens for zen but I haven't needed to thanks to LTS + leveling + automatic skill resets after some game changes.

What you can't reset are your race and career (tac, sci, eng). For those you do need to create a new character.

Are we talking about the same thing?

I'm taking about a complete character reset. For example, I want to completely reset one of my Romulan captains. Strip him down to the beginning and completely redo everything about him - including changing from Fed aligned to Klingon aligned.

In other words, a totally fresh restart without losing any of his equipment ( I don't have any Fed ships) or experience.

The game design only supports a skill respec, not career, race or faction.

And that's why it would cost Zen.

To support the coding cost, as well as discourage people from doing it too often with one character.

MMOs have "unalterable" information that the game absolutely needs to stay the same or else it would lose track of your character's information in the database. In most MMOs this is racial, gender, and class data, which is why you can't change race, gender, or class, in most MMOs. It isn't a simple coding change to remove said restrictions, you just can't, period.

I think its only the HUGE ones like Final Fantasy XIV and WoW that have any kind of race change capability, but that was built in from the get go. Tacking it on after the fact... I can see how that can go horribly wrong. Especially with STO's speggetti code. Used to be that if they fixed one thing somewhere in the game, the Borg broke. I really don't like the idea of them mucking with character code and risk breaking something major.

STO is just not set up for it whatsoever. If they had built the game with that idea in mind from the beginning then perhaps, but almost 10 years after the fact? Not likely.

That isn't how game coding works m8.

Well, if they really wanted to it could be done, it's just that updating every bit of character state properly would be a nightmare for both coding and especially QA.

Theoretically possible? Yes. Possible to make it work perfectly with a reasonable amount of effort? Unlikely and the devs have said no to race, faction, career changes in the past.

Cryptic doesn't want to add this feature. Too much work for too little return (profit). It's just far more profitable to hope that you create a new character and play the game even more, which statistically leads to more sales.
When you see "TRIBBLE" in my posts, it's because I manually typed "TRIBBLE" and censored myself.

It's simply a cost-benefit question. In the end, race change is something that people would need very rarely, so it's not worth the effort.

    - including changing from Fed aligned to Klingon aligned.

And here is a big example of why this idea cannot be implemented.

Can you imagine the exploits that can arise just from this? Level as a Klingon, get all the Admiralty ships.. re-spec to fed, get all those ships too.

Console like the DPRM too expensive for your fed? No problem.. respect KDF, buy it cheap.. spec back. KDF wants 'Honored Dead?'.. become a fed for 5 min.. done.

Respec tokens are already in game and they provide enough as it is. A ground up restart only opens up potential problems.
    Insert witty signature line here.

Personally i can't see the coding and work required to allow a gender/career/allegiance swap to be beneficial to Cryptic. Do it old school and support the game by rolling a new character.

Hello rubber banding my old friend, time to bounce around the battlezone again, where are all my bug reports going?, out of love with this game I am falling, As Cryptic fail to acknowledge a problem exists, Shakes an angry fist, And from Support all I'm hearing are the sounds of silence.

full specs. ,endvr. could be added for sale

The only problem is Cryptic would get whining about "pay2win" (win what?) if they sold 30 spec point boxes, instant rep completion boxes, etc. in the C-Store.

... and the people buying them would whine about having "nothing to do" :)

Yeah, this. Can't have to many bank slots.

Or let us buy another EC cap and cap our EC at 3b.
Now a LTS and loving it.
Just because you spend money on this game, it does not entitle you to be a jerk if things don't go your way.

Also, the reset in Champs isn't that extensive. You're the same gender you were at the beginning, and CO doesn't really have "racial" divisions or anything quite like the careers of STO. (Archetypes are close, but all they do is restrict the powers you receive as you advance to specific powers, or sometimes a choice of two. It's analogous to career abilities in STO, but not anything like identical.)

The devs have already stated that Faction, Career, Race, and Sex are hardcoded and cannot be changed. /Thread
