I got curious as to how long players have been around, I'm expecting the results of this to be very interesting. For me it was when the game became FTP back in 2012. I included the N/A option in case there were forum members who for some reason haven't actually started playing.
Started it when it became a free-to-play on PS4 and thought I had nothing to lose by trying it. I've since lost countless hours and 1000s of dollars (of other people's money).
I still remember my very first character doing The Odyssey Class back when he was still a mere Lieutenant in a T1 Miranda Class, the USS Vegeta.
Actually, I think he still has the Odyssey Class from the event.

I started JUST before F2P. In fact, the reason I GOT the game was because it was going F2P. I got EXTREMELY lucky and found a physical copy of the Collector's Edition at a local Gamestop for $10 and I pounced on that so fast...
I still remember when Krystal Jade was just a rookie Lieutenant running around with her Miranda class USS Cerberus, how lucky I was to get the USS Tacoma at T2 (she was named that already and I LIVE in Tacoma), and the pain I felt fighting the Romulans in a Cheyenne class.
Good times. Still have her as my main. Will never get rid of her.

I had wanted to play it before that and tried a couple times, but the old tutorial was awful and I had no idea what I was doing so I gave up. Shortly before LoR I started playing with a friend who gave me some tips to get me started, and I have been playing on and off (mostly on) ever since.
Started with FTP and loved it right away. Since then I've spent an ungodly amount of money on the game, but it's the only one I play and it's worth it for me. I hope the game lives on for a long time.
Don't let them promote you. Don't let them transfer you. Don't let them do anything that takes you off the bridge of that ship, because while you're there... you can make a difference.

2011 on PC and this year I started up on XB1 and yes, I'm still playing on PC!
"You don't want to patrol!? You don't want to escort!? You don't want to defend the Federation's Starbases!? Then why are you flying my Starships!? If you were a Klingon you'd be killed on the spot, but lucky for you.....you WERE in Starfleet. Let's see how New Zealand Penal Colony suits you." Adm A. Necheyev.
Early 2014 for me. Folks on Second Life were telling me about it, and asked me if I'd care to try it on for size. Sure enough, I moseyed on over with them, brewed a toon. And the rest is history.
Resident TOS, G.I. Joe, Transformers and hair metal fangirl.
came in here in 2011 because in 2010 I read that the game was garbage. Then I saw a collectors edition (shirt, pin, digital goodies) for only 10 Euros on amazon...got around 5 or 6 prepaid cards too from a retailer for literally 1 euro each.
Been playing since then and learned to never trust reviews again.
Season 5 methinks, in 2011. I have multiple boxed versions (they were less expensive than game cards or the subscription) but my first was the silver edition with Starfleet pin, posters, post cards and a digital deluxe edition on steam.

A few weeks after release... I still remember Cryptic employees like snix or dstahl, when Science Team gave shield damage reduction, Klingons had only PvP "content" and the Deep Space Science Shoe and the Recon Science Vessel were the endgame science ships.
I also remember when the (T5) Galaxy-X Dreadnought was a reward giving out to people that recruited 5 new (subscribing!) players to the game.

I think I started shortly after launch then left and came back during the F2P and have been here off and on sense. I do love the game but really right now am trying to get caught up with reps and gearing out my stuff has been a ride in itself.
Well if the results so far are fairly representative of the current player base, it looks like the majority of the players have either been there from the very start or when the game went FtP. For me it was the game going FtP that swayed me into it- I actually bought my initial membership the same time the two guys I worked with started playing SW:TOR the day it released!
Because the initial sub expired after the game went FtP I didn't have to set up a monthly- I ended up buying the LTM 4 years back during one of the sales. Because it was during the sale it's paid for itself several times over since!
I started the day it was released. I was such a Star Trek fan back then (still am) that I was most definitely their target market. I bought a lifetime subscription the first time they offered it and never regretted it once.
Now, I have taken long breaks from the game to play other stuff, but I always end up coming back because I still love the game, and it's almost like starting from scratch each time I come back because of all the changes and additions they've made.

I got lured in by the promise that I would be pulverizing moving Klingon Snowmen via snowballs.
I think he just said that because he knew I liked Klingons.
