And further, how many of them are active? By "active", I mean using each time you run the game, versus ones you have but don't use any more.
Because this is a two-part question, poll options are inappropriate. From the number of players who want the character cap raised from whatever it is now (I think it's around 50) I have to assume people have more toons today than when I last asked this same question almost 3 years ago.
Me, I have an LTS and 10 characters (haven't bought any slots), all of whom are active. I'll almost certainly gain an 11th when the next expansion goes live.
As an aside, does anyone have more than one account? I can't imagine having so many toons that one account isn't enough to hold them all. Bearing in mind that any purchases you make are not shared between them. Doing the maths, if you have 48 toons and spent 15 minutes a day on each one it would take you twelve hours to run through them all.

2. I have no characters I don't use anymore, but they don't all get used every time I log in. I focus on around three at a time: One who is refining all his/her dilithium from finishing all the reps, one who is leveled and working on the reps, and one who is leveling up. During events, the one working on reps is usually my first choice, for the marks.
After that whichever character's theme would best benefit from the latest reward or ship I've acquired gets some play time, to level up mastery or try out the new equipment.
Don't let them promote you. Don't let them transfer you. Don't let them do anything that takes you off the bridge of that ship, because while you're there... you can make a difference.

Usually sign on several times a day and work with one or two for 15 min blocks, on and off, all day long.

I'll be deleting @10 to make room for the new Jems next month.
Single acct.
I initially just wanted to make/play the various races for both factions, just because.
After investing in most of them, I didn't bother to delete them which was the plan.
Good call, now I'm in a position to alleviate the Dil drought I had.
I don't play them all in a single session but can log in if I need Dil, so yes they're active.
Increase the toon cap?
I could understand why someone would want that.
If I did create more than the 30 I have, they would be just for the sake of creating them.
Also, I believe you can have just 2 accounts.
I read that somewhere.

Currently, I have 52 characters, all on one account and all are active, though not on a daily basis. I had thoughts on creating at least 12 more, although that doesn't include the upcoming addition of Jem'Hadar and Cardassians.
The reintroduction of Delta Recruits had me seriously considering starting another account so that I can create those other 12 characters. But I'd much rather not do that, because there are so many things that I've account unlocked with this account that I wouldn't have on another.
So, yes, I'm definitely in the camp of wanting the character slot cap limit raised.

All are active. I am already dreading doing it all again with a new Dominion Character, I can't imagine doing it 30-50 times.
I have been tempted to create a ton more characters just for Dilithium farming and generating zen, but honestly.. I already get everything I want, just takes me a little longer then someone with 30+. I don't want to spend hours just doing admiralty so I'm saying with 6.
Oh, don't bother doing everything to all of them. I have 6 mains....they have everything filled except Constable Specialization....because I don't want it. The other characters...I made 4 of them specifically NOT to ever have any Rep or Specialization.
I just wanted to play STO without all the extras.

Good for you! I think?
Around 15-20 ish.
As for active, I tend to run some more than others, just depends on my mood, or whether or not friends wish to run something or other. My AOY toon Eagle took over as "main" for a while until she did everything one can do on an AOY toon, and unlocked all the associated goodies. I have an odd fondness for 23rd century feds. I also have a couple toons I made specifically to help friends out with AOY and Delta sort of things.

My secondary account is purely free 2 play and has 4 characters. It is pretty inactive compared to my primary account. I only log into that account for at most maybe 5 times per month... unless there are events like the ones mentioned above which I want to do. However, during the beginning of the Delta Recruitment event last month I powered through the all the required missions in about 6 or 7 days.
Currently 14 characters on the LTS and F2P has 6.
I do also have a 2nd f2p on PS4, although that's more for some mindless telly based gaming than anything else.
Anyway, all my alts are lvl 60 with all reps at T5. 50 of them are more or less retired at this point and one is a mule who will get deleted for a Jem'Hadar if there is no new slot given for the expansion. Even if there is, I will then make a Cardassian as well. I have 1 alt, my first, run thru events and the like to open new unlocks and what not. So that's as close as I get to active use on that account.
I started up a second ftp account last year just after the summer event. Turns out I got really attached to the characters so I found an old unused STO box online and subbed for a month. Then I came into a bit of a windfall and decided to go LTS on the second account as well thanks to a well timed LTS sale. Already up to 15 alts there, thanks to the Delta Recruit event and will be up to at least 17 once ViL goes live. Add in a possible Gamma Recruit event and maybe even a replay of the Temporal Recruit event and I'll easily be at 20 before the end of the year.
For me, I enjoy leveling. End game does have some appeal, but I just like to level. I also tend to work out a story in my head for each alt which prevents me from deleting any. When I get asked why I just don't delete old unused alts I ask the person... "Do you have kids? If so, which one/s do you want to delete to make room for more?" It's stupid and I know it, but I just cannot delete my alts. Unless they are specifically mules.
I used to be the same way, each Captain would have a different end game ship. Then T6 happened and that became no longer feasible. Now my plan is to give each Captain his own fleet, with one of each of the major types of ships, Escort/Science/Cruiser, and perhaps throw in some of the 'lesser' type ships like a Carrier/Scout/Raider. That way I can still keep them slightly different.
