Hey guys! Look at what Neverwinter's doing!

swamarianswamarian Member Posts: 1,506 Arc User
From the announcement;
In Ravenloft you will have the chance to travel to Demiplane of Dread with some special assistance from the Vistani. Your mission to rid the land of Barovia of its curse will lead you to encounters with all manner of horrors and creatures, including a new Monster Hunt mechanic! Night and Day will also play a meaningful part in your adventures, much like this cycle does to the creatures of this land.

So, it sounds like they'll have a day/night cycle. Anyone have any idea how it works, and if it can be retrofit to Risa?

I wish they could bring back Risa's night and day cycle, the suns setting was just magical.

What's the point of a solar cycle... in space? The Sun, as we know it, only exists in the Solar System. If I'm on New Romulus then the solar cycle changes. If I'm on my ship in orbit around New Romulus then the solar cycle is meaningless. The ISS experiences sunrise dozens of times a day so clearly they don't bother tracking time by the solar cycle.

Solar cycles only matter in games where it's the means of timekeeping, i.e. a fantasy game.

3 posts and no-one said "It can't be monetized, so won't happen"? You disappoint me, forum...

I wish they'd bring it back, it made sense on planets... better yet, put it on all planets and tie it the computers clock.

In the time before, when everything was magical, you could watch Risa's majestic suns set. Then, if you were lucky, you could watch fireworks as Klingon and Trill lovers argued.
Now, things just happen, and it's not as nice.

On the other hand, there's better lighting everywhere but Risa. It's a trade-off.

On the third hand (Tzenkethi have four of them, just bear with me here), the length of a "solar cycle" certainly varies from world to world. Even here in Sol system, Earth's day is about 24 hours; a Martian sol is about 40 minutes longer; a day on Venus, if you could see the Sun through the sulfur-dioxide cloud cover, is very nearly 117 Earth days (longer than a local year!). Defining "day" can get even trickier on planets of multiple-star systems; 40 Eridani B and C, for instance, would make night on Vulcan a moot point for several months out of their year, as in the proper point of their orbit around 40 Eridani A they would illuminate Vulcan's night side. Given differing rotational velocities, and the issues caused by binary or trinary systems (or worse - NASA's Kepler mission located one world in a five-star system!), how exactly would a "solar cycle" be defined?

I'd argue that the lighting is not better as it makes three of my toons look green. And none of them are alien so they're not supposed to have a green tint. I'd happily get rid of this "better light" to have correct skin color and day/night cycle back.
Logic is the beginning of wisdom, not the end of it.

Neverwinter always had beautiful skies in their environments.
Not surprised they figured out how to do Day and Night.

Yeah, the new lighting system is great for environments, but doesn't work well with characters about 70% of the time...

Yes. AGAIN... neutered by Lighting 2.0.

The sun is part of the Paramount side of the Star Trek franchise. They’d have to get permission to use it.
