Great ships that are surprisingly cheap

I'm speaking specifically of the Na'kuhl Acheros Battlecruiser and the Herald Vonph Dreadnought Carrier. I own both because I bought them on whims after realizing they were so cheap (since they were the Ultra Rare ships from their boxes I never expected to see them so low).
The Acheros is friggin' good, with a desireable weapon slot layout, a turn rate that almost makes using beams a hindrance, battle cloak, and an awesome Boff layout too.
The Vonph is admittedly kinda huge, but is still a great ship with an awesome, Tactically heavy Boff layout and a good weapon layout, not to mention very good hanger pets.
All this is my own opinion from my own use of them of course, but on paper these ships are really good. Is the lack of a 4th Tac console on the Acheros and the size of the Vonph (the only downsides I can see) really enough to make the prices tank so much?

Why does no one want them?

Short answer? The reward pack from the infinity box that grants a choice between the two grants a choice only between those two, meaning that the supply is relatively high compared with the standard T6 ship box which can become any one of a bunch of ships, which keeps the supply of any one of those options low.

The reason those two ships are as cheap as they are is because those two are the ONLY choices for the Ulta-Rare ship pack from Infinity boxes. The real 'grand prize' from Infinity boxes is the normal T6 prize pack.

But shouldn't that make them more expensive, being so rare? Or is it a lot of people put them on the exchange hoping to flip them, and the market is flooded?
I'll admit, a deep understanding of market economics sometimes eludes me.

    They arent rare at all.

Lets say the odds of winning the UR ship are 2x as difficult as winning the normal t6 ship.

Over the course of say a month, 1000 t6 ships are won and 500 UR ships are won.

The 1000 t6 ships are divided between like a dozen or more diffrent choices, lets say 20 choices, so you end up with 50 of each ship on the market per month.

The 500 UR ships are divided between only two choices, so you end up with 250 of each ship on the market per month.

After 2 months there are 100 of each t6 ship won, and 500 of each UR ship won.

It may not really be 100/500 etc, but whatever the number is, you'll end up with like 5x more of each UR ship than you do of each t6 ship.

The super jackpot lockbox experiment didnt work with infinitization at all. Maybe if they'd made the odds of winning them astronomically small, like 1/2000, it would have preserved their high prices and rarity, but they sadly they didnt :(

Ok that makes sense. So I suppose BEFORE they were added to the Infinity boxes, when they were new, they probably were just as expensive (or higher) than the regular T6 prize.

Also, it just occurred to me that might be why they haven't come up with another ultra rare prize :D

The vonph was the first ship to hit 1b ec I think.

Yeah with infinitization a super prize ship wouldnt go over well. It would cost like 700m-1b ec at first and then the moment it hit the infinity box would plummet to like 100m. Not a lot of folks would be happy.

Well, not a lot of people trying to make money off 'em, anyway...anybody who wanted such a ship to fly would be in a great position.

Infinity Lockbox, the great equalizer. Well people that need to buy a computer game when it first comes out pay what they do because they 'just have to have it now'. Within six months prices on the games plummet. They have no regrets, they just do not play the long game. They do not have the patience. GOG and Steam Sales for me.

Infinity Lockbox/Infinity R&D Box, the masses cheer, the 'Privateers' cry.

I agree wholeheartedly with that first part. Even when I had the money, I never bought a game when it first came out. That $59.99 USD game at launch would normally be going for $29 or even $19 about six months later. Being real patient would sometimes see it end up in the clearance bin for $10 or less. Haven't seen a game lately I really wanted so I don't know whether the advent of direct download instead of boxed in store has stabilized prices or made the drastic price drop even faster though.

I have the same patience with STO. There's not a ship in this game that's worth paying 100M or more for, not for a single ship on a single toon. I wait patiently and if the price of a ship I would like to have ever drops enough to be worth it to me, then I'll buy it and so far every time the infinity box comes out, ship price drop lower and lower....

    LTS and loving it.

For the Acheros and Vonph, all it'd take to halt the downward spiral of them is for Cryptic to either add another ship to that level (maybe one of the lower selling 'Promotion!' ships?) or do like what they do with the Phoenix packs and let you trade that token for 2x ultra-rare ships instead. I'm a bit surprised they haven't done something like that already. In other words, waiting too long might end in these deals going away and only being replaced by more expensive stuff.

The voth bastion flight deck cruiser is going for 35000000 ec on average(last time i checked anyway) and although its still just t5-u i hear the voth ships are some of the best in the entire game. This is on ps4 btw.

Unlikely. If they ever do add more UR lockbox ships, it would still take another 6 months before they end up in the infbox and affect the supply of the Vonph & Acheros.

Having a 3rd ship in the UR set wouldn't actually raise the price of the current ones by that much, or that quickly. It would take about 200-300% increase before the UR's would match the regular infbox T6's. That's 4-6 new UR ships, not one. And it would take time for the existing stock to be sold out.

Any new addition would be pretty expensive at first, though.

I meant that more as a warning for those that'd have to actually need time save up 100Mil. I'd expect a fair bump the very same day this happened, with a upswing in costs in months past it, similar to what happened to the older but desirable in the main T6 lockbox ship pack when Cryptic added in the JHDC and Keldon T6s to it. That was fairly disappointing to me as was doing a combo of saving and waiting for the price to come down of the Tarantula and it jumped very quickly.

Bastion was never that great. The only Voth ship I heard anything about being pretty nice mechanics wise was the Voth Palisade Science vessel, but that was superseded by other Science T5s long before T6s came out.

Depends what you want to do with it. Bastion has a lot of science room to hybrid into exotic damage and/or drain. The Bastion and Bulwark are essentially proto-Command Battlecruisers. The Bastion's console is, effectively, a high-powered Feedback Pulse that grants immunity and cannot be removed(outside of exceeding it's generous damage threshold). When combined with the Palisade's Aceton console, you've got a pretty nasty ship that will absolutely punish anything that tries to fire upon or get near it(Aceton Mode can do some very respectable damage if it's fully charged and partgen boosted).

Personally, I think they should add T6 Promotion! ships that are over 2 years old to the Infinity UR Prize Packs. The likelihood of them doing reruns of those ships is quite low. Another Bug Promotion around Victory is Life might be the exception, but I'd be really surprised if they did the Sheshar or Annorax again at this point.
  • ltminnsltminns Member Posts: 12,572 Arc User
The Sheshars, Annorax, and JHSS/JHRS are in the R&D Infinity Prize Pack. That's how they'll be back. The T6 Constitution/T'liss/D7 were also part of that R&D Infinity.

Well, I don't have any ideas then for supplementing the Ultra-Rare Prize Pack from Infinity boxes then. I doubt they'd be willing to add exclusive things like the Vizier, Mirror Guardian, or Nagus to it..

First of all, wow-i didn't know that either. Are they different than the others with each new promotion ship?

Second, I was thinking they could simply remove the "ultra rare" tier in the Infinity boxes, and just add the acheros and vonph in with all the other prize ships. That would solve the problem, right?

  • meimeitoomeimeitoo Member Posts: 12,594 Arc User
The reason I've never purchased/flown either one is I have far too many ships already. I think I average about a dozen or so ships per character. Really too many for me to learn to use well at this point. I'm also sort of a purist. I prefer my Starfleet chars fly Starfleet ships, my KDF chars in Klingon ships, and my sole Rommie flies nothing but Warbirds. The ships you've mentioned, OP, are fine ships and both look like they'd be very enjoyable to use. But they're not my cuppa. I am glad they're ingame and other players enjoy them though. IDIC and all that stuff.

One of my concerns with having so many ships is playing them well. I intensely dislike being carried by others in any STF or playing PvP poorly enough where I am a detriment to my team rather than an asset. I'd much rather use a T5-U to the maximum of it capabilities because I am very familiar with the ship than do simply okay with a LockBox or Fleet T6 ship.

I also admit to being perverse enough I will use ships and weapons others in these forums dislike. I have a T6 Morrigu kitted out completely with Nukara Rep gear and anything else which improves Tetryon. Simply because someone once told me I was wasting my time with Tetryon, because "Everyone who knows anything at all about this game uses nothing but Anti-Proton, n00b!" It was very...satisfying to go five and oh and make that player rage quit a PvP match.

Which brings me to my point. If you think you'll like the ships you mentioned, get them. If you find them fun to fly and using them makes you play the game longer and more enjoyably, you've made the correct purchase. Pay no attention to people who disparage your choices. Advice from people should be considered just advice. Especially advice from crusty old salts like me, lol. Despite what the so-called 'experts' say there really isn't one best ship or weapon system. The true experts and excellent players of STO learned a long time ago it is the player, not the ship or gear, which is the ultimate decider of whether or not a ship is good or worth purchasing.

I'd take it as a personal favor if you purchase and used both ships. From the tone of your post it sounds like your mind was already made up and you are here looking for some external validation. My opinion is you don't need any. You are smart and experienced enough to make good chioces for yourself. Go and purchase the ships and enjoy them like you think you will.

    See you ingame.

^^ That was a very good post.

Probably doesn't count, but I just picked up a Breen Plesh Brek Heavy Raider (T5-U); and not only was it surprisingly cheap (from 1 single Phoenix box), but surprisingly good too.

That's because it has so far come up once, and only once, and this was several 'Promotion!' packs ago. I'm guessing it didn't meet Cryptic's goals, considering they reran the TOS pack instead of the Infinity pack recently, even though the TOS options are part of the Infinity pack. Might be coding issues since it reportedly didn't actually have flybys working (I have that turned off under Notifications, so I don't see them either way.) Another potential issue is that it managed to push older Promotion! ships up in price on the Exchange, instead of lowering them like the Inifinity Lockbox did with most ships in it, as everything in it was pegged against the TOS Connie for price.

Given that the Inifinity Promotion! pack hasn't ever come back, they might consider other methods for dealing with the older Promotion! ships, which could fit neatly with the Infinity Lockbox Epic prize level.

Hybrid exotic hasn't worked for me so great since Season 13.5, seeing as it rendered my Gravity Well 1 on most cruisers I have into a screen decoration. Without compromising damage output to squeeze in a bunch more ControlX, I don't think it's workable. Feedback Pulse, at least the BOff ability (not sure about the Bastion's console,) got hit by the nerf bat pretty hard too. FBP no longer crits, and percent exotic no longer buffs it, only Particle Gens, making it harder to use on a hybrid build. What would be your suggestions with that in mind for a Bastion build?

The price the T5-U Narcine has been going for is criminally low compared to the joy (and firepower) that thing puts out. Mobulai are top-tier frigates and the Carrier itself has a superb seating setup.

In short, I run Inverted Tractor Beam Repulsors and Warp Plasma on mine with a bunch of tetryon sets. If TBR doesn't kill them by the time they're trapped and melting in the Warp Plasma, Comboing an Aceton Mode(Palisade Console - stacks with Plasmonic Leech while active) discharge alongside Refracting Tetryon Cascade(Nukara Rep active) is usually lethal(if not, I have atleast 3 other high damage tetryon attack clickies that I could potentially use/cycle).

Reactive Immunity Matrix(Bastion console) is a 100% energy damage reflect with a 100k damage threshold. It can be useful for a number of situations, ranging from reflecting charge-up heavy attacks to tearing apart small, high damage attack ships. Again, it also persists through subnukes and other buff-stripping attempts. However, it does apply a hefty(50%) outgoing damage reduction, so it's more of a situational tool to punish high incoming damage. (I really do hope the damage threshold gets scaled up when it gets the T6 revamp - 100k was fine at level 50, but it rarely lasts the full duration at level 60.)

Alternative builds would be comboing Tyken's Rift with Graviton Pulse Generator and Delphic Tear Generator; or a "Gravity Bomber"(Grav Well + Plasma/AoE torpedo spam); or a shield-stripping interdictor with Quantum Phase Torp Spreads, Charged Particle Burst, and Emit Unstable Warp Bubble. The Bastion/Bulwark really thrive when they're in the thick of the action, so frontal/deflector-based builds don't really utilize the consoles that make the Voth ships unique.

I can throw up my personal build on the academy and link it if desired, but I feel this might be getting a bit off topic.. (While it is effective, it's also a very unorthodox build and not exactly "cheap" - I've been refining its intricacies for over 3 years -, but I suppose it could provide direction/inspiration for other people to experiment with.)

They just ran an infinity promo all december last year. :smirk:

They only reason they redid the T6 Constitution by itself was they wanted to milk the player base directly to go hand-in-hand with the 'on-his-own-time' redo of the Constitution exterior.

  • I saw someone comment that cyptic does not plan to do a t6 refit of the voth ships.

If we want to talk about bargains/underrated ships... I think the MeshWeaver deserves mention.
5 -10mil for a Meshweaver escort on the exchange, last I checked...

    At T5 its nothing special.
But go ahead and throw a T5U token on it and it becomes a glass cannon that can output almost as much DPS as the big boy T6's (within reason).

Its small, nimble, fast and has lots of teeth (5 tac console slots @ T5U) and has a fairly nice geometric design.
If you're space poor and want a decent/cheap escort... Meshweaver T5U is not a bad place to start.

They're pretty good. Didn' they only have 10 consoles, though? (Even at T5-U)

    9 at T5;
    4 tac, 3 sci, 2 engi

    10 T5U;
    5 tac, 3 Sci, 2 engi

The token puts it into reasonable DPS ranges though. And the masteries are fairly offensive.

    Masteries are T1 +5% ACC, T2 +5% Defense, T3 +10% Kin/Energy Damage, T4 +2.5% CrtH
