Hi all. Star Trek online is a great game. But with Star Citizen coming out offering a huge universe as well as multiple career options, will Star Trek online fade or will it adopt?
Star Citizen will never launch, and if it did it sounds like its only available to the super rich. If you are looking for a different flavour, try Elite Dangerous, not everyone's cuppa, but to me worth a play.
the butthurt is stronk in here... Frankly I don't see much of an issue with SC and STO. Even if it dropped next week with its promised modding support, its going to be another year before a private server with 1/2 decent trek models is available, and that would only be a partial implementation, a full Trek TC would be 2-3 years out. Plus, as others mentioned, the two games are very different and appeal to very different gamers.
Star Citizen will never launch, and if it did it sounds like its only available to the super rich.
$45 dollars is "super rich"? Awesome. I hadn't realized how good I was doing.
Game has playable space combat right now, today. It has the most open development schedule in the industry. The people who think it'll never launch are pretty much heads-in-the-sand projecting their petty spite on something they know nothing about. Because of fear. Because how dare something new come along and gamers migrate to it... like they ALWAYS do.
Honestly, they're very different markets for very different games. People wanting true 3D space combat with personal-skill based accuracy haven't been hanging around STO's neck of the woods for a long time. People who wanted multiple human players running a single ship left STO before it even launched. About the only thing you can say they compete on is procedural exploration, and STO abandoned that frontier years ago.
Probably get bashed as much as no mans sky when it does because it was so overhyped way to early in its life with the kind of hype that nothing would ever live up to. Hype is only as big as the individual themselves gives it with the information provided so in that regards SC does have a far better footing. Especially compared to the incredibly light on info and heavily curated releases that NMS had prior to its launch, anyone who didnt have alarm bells ringing and kept getting themselves hyped over the same bits of footage only had themselves to blame.
As far as competition goes its only really got E:D to contend with but as that is more sim than SC is so the market can be split without the need for pointless hating on either one.
I tried it and really didnt like the flight system, apparently its been changed since then but I've yet to see for myself. My other concern is that it'll almost require 3 different control setups to get the most out of it, kb&m for on foot, controller for driving and flightstick for flight (obviously)
They made the development more transparent because of the volume of cash that has flowed into it from backers and possibly the fear that folk would start to request refunds because it has taken so long to get where it currently is. Normal for a something with such an ambitious scope but this is the age of internet bandwagoning and litigation so better to cover themselves a bit before the denizens of farcebook, twitter and reddit start lighting torches and sharpening the pitchforks.
If Star Citizen becomes a huge success i can't see it effecting Star Trek. I've asked this question myself and the answer is simple, SC is about as realistic as a science fiction game as it can get, specifically the physics engine: you crash into an object you are gonna crumple. If your character doesn't eject in time you die, if you do eject and your opponent is a TRIBBLE... you die. Then you leave a will and thats your new character. Now i don't know about you but at some point thats gonna be frustrating when you lose your ship you gotta wait for the insurance payout to replace it.
When i want to try life out in space in a science realistic world ill play star citizen, when i remember why games are made the way they are cause real life can suck, and i just want to blow stuff up with a star ship and crew that can't die and escape realistic reality I'm gonna play star trek.
More "Buy to Play" - IE you just need to buy a ship package (between $30 - $45) and you'll have full access to the SC Persistent Universe server. There's no monthly subscription or anything like that needed after the 'box' purchase.
But, will it 'kill' STO? Doubtful, it's really a different type of MMO compared to STO.
personally though I'll never understand WHY people believe a new game in the same general genre will 'kill' another game. I mean did STO kill EVE Online? (Hey, they're BOTH space based MMOs.)
SC will get it's playerbase like any other game; and yes, maybe some people will abandon STO for it, but most likely, some days they'll decide to play STO, other days they may decide to play SC.
YES - You CAN play BOTH. (Who would have thunk it?)

If/when Star Citizen releases I plan to at least try it soon after launch especially if it delivers upon half of what it states it will do.
It does appear more expensive though just based upon all the SC packages they're trying to presell which has me hesitant.
I'm getting sick & tired of STO's "gambling" mechanisms for the top tier items especially since Cryptic doesn't favor me with good luck LOL so if Star Citizen stays away from those tactics I'll be more persuaded to leave STO.
Star Citizen is a next generation game compared to STO though so I think SC has the probability of being a better game but STO wont get hindered too much.
Hehe, I’m not really worried here. Same as I wasn’t worried about the SC threads we had a year ago, two years ago, three years ago and four years ago. Tell you why? I’m not worried because of them:
The bread and butter of this game’s community and Cryptic’s best customers! Does anybody really think they stand a chance in a game, any game, where skill is required and rewards have actually be earned?
No, for as long as those fallas are around we will always have STO. I salute them and gladly carry them through next ISA!

I'm sorry, but this game has people who complain that they can't get past stage 3 of the new NWS or can't do 1% of somebody else's damage. These people have ZERO chance in a real game...which star citizen is. STO will not be affected because 99% of the players who plays this game has zero chance is a real game...me included. I get blown up like 30 times per kill in star conflict and elite dangerous...so I suspect star citizen will be the same. And yet, I get calls of me being a munchkin power gaming uber players by this playerbase. Yeah...no chance of there being a massive migration from this game. They can't...there literally isn't a game easy enough for it to happen. Even phone games offer more challenge than this game.
Eve has more to fear from Star Citizen. STO has nothing to fear from competition with Star Citizen since STO is too story-driven. Eve and Star Citizen are sandbox space MMOs where there is not much of a story, but there is a lot of other stuff to do. I suspect that lots of people will leave Eve and play Star Citizen.
Star Citizen is a great example why sometimes, having a publisher who constantly pushes you to get your game released can be a good thing. It has been in developpment for over 5 years now, received over 150 million $ in funds and is still nowhere even close to going into beta. Systems are getting revamped, re-revamped and re-re-revamped constantly, requiring for all other sections of the game to be modified as well. And while they allow themselves plenty of time to "get everything just right" they are in constant need of new cash to keep development running. Which means they constantly have to make new promises, create new concept ships and extend the scope of the game to keep their backers interested.
Something tells that by the time Star Citizen comes out, Star Trek Online will have been offline for many years already.

Star Citizen isn't going to affect STO. Elite Dangerous didn't affect STO no matter how much certain individuals tried to ram the Hype Train into it. Hell... TOR doesn't have an impact on STO.
Its like all those so called "WoW Killers" that came out over the years. All hype... but WoW still lives. Same can and will be said of STO.

Indeed.
anyone saying "game a" will kill off "game b" is working on the false premise that a) game companies even want that b)that most people are looking for the "new cool thing" and will abanddon a game totally if something similar but newer comes along.
Neither of those are not strickly speaking true, while there's some companies who value the short term publicity of being " *game a* killer" more then long term profits those generally don't end up being successful, also while there's individuals who are chasing the "new cool thing" most people aren't like that, they simply cannot afford to be and thus there's a lot of inertia to overcome to make them switch games.
Also Star Citizen and STO aren't really in the same genre as far as I can tell, would be like saying that Overwatch will kill Total War series (in case you don't know one is a compative FPS, the other a RTS, well series of RTS games)

Exactly. The only way for a game to potentially have any impact would be if it was the same genre. So Overwatch could be considered a competitor with Team Fortress 2. Although TF2 is actually F2P while you still have to buy Overwatch.
Star Citizen is in the vein of space combat simulator. If anyone is unfamiliar with the work of Chris Roberts, look up Wing Commander. So if and when SC comes out... it would be more up against ED than STO.
In the meantime... where's our next Wing Commander game? lol

IIRC TF2 has/had some problems with getting new players due to some bad calls made by Valve, but that just re-enforces our point doesn't it. The company giving problems to TF2 is Valve and not Blizzard.
As for Wing Commander IIRC the rights to the series are owned by EA so, I think "when h*ll freezes over" is the best guess as to when we get a new entry in that series, though we got Starcraft 2 when everyone thought Blizzard had abandoned all other games besides World of Warcraft so who knows.

Yea... I know... they'd probably try to milk it like they do Star Wars if they did. DLC up the kimshee.

True, every time I try to play the SC beta, I suck at it, and don't enjoy it much. I am worried it will be the same in the final game.
I hope Squadron 42 will work for me at last, all the other stuff is not that important, though it would have been nice.
Star Trek Online Advancement: You start with lowbie gear, you end with Lobi gear.
Been seein' these here Star Citizen threads since February 2012. All of them are always the same. "Blah blah blah Star Citizen bestest evah! Blah blah blah gonna kill off STO! Blah blah blah can't wait until Star Citizen gets released! Blah blah blah then we'll see something!"
Well? Where is this paragon sans peer of the penultimate MMO at? Oh. I forgot. Still in development, isn't it?
You cannot compete nor attract customers wthout viable product which is in general release. Until this occurs all we have is a lot of hype and a bunch of people who have bought into it all the way. Turns out P.T. Barnum was right after all.
A six year old boy and his starship. Living the dream.
Really, the more interesting question is why would Star Citizen even want a slice STO's dedicated playerbase? Over one hundred fifty million dollars in preorders and likely that much or more from other companies lining up to license the tech they're developing. They've essentially gone through the perfectly ordinary 5 year development cycle... only without ever once drowning in red ink. They've gone out of their way to tell EVE players to &!(% off, because the economic free-for-all bloodshed they thrive on Will. Not. Happen. in the SC 'verse. It really is possible you're not the customer they're looking for.
Trust me, no one over there CARES whether they pick up a single player from this crowd. If you like what you see, you'll check it out. If you don't, meh. Stay here and bang out another 45 second Crystaline Cataclysm run or conga-line through ESD. Your fun is where you look for it.
I could roll out timelines and show what's ALREADY been delivered. I could link numerous interviews with developers whose passions are backed by a working bankroll, who have consistently gone after problems with a "lets actually do it right" culture a few design houses I could mention only dream of. I could debunk the Haterade Stand slogans one-by-one but the fact is I don't want to. If you are that passionately opposed while simultaneously displaying complete and utter ignorance of Star Citizen's actual development state, I don't want to convince you to try it -- because then I might run into you in game. And if you actually follow it closely and want no part of it, I don't want to change your mind either. Good on you. An informed position. Hope you find something that does tickle your fancy.
