How did she impact all of science fiction? I don't mean to lesson Carrie's importance to the genera, but this is star trek. She had little to no impact on a series that was created before star wars was even released.
Since it looks as if most trek fans dont like an idea of honoring those important actors and actress' in the sci fi genre i will part with this pic
I am a Star Wars fan first, and I don't think a memorial is a good idea either. Once you open memorials to other franchises you open the floodgates for hundreds of "add this actor/actress" demands. This is a Star Trek game, the memorial should be for Star Trek cast and crew. An homage like what I suggested earlier is fine, but not a memorial, that belongs in SWtOR, not STO.

My arguement wasnt about one particular person , but those individuals in the sci fi genre who had a impact on all manners of sci fi.
Like include even authors like Issac asimov to mention one, we should honor those people who really had an impact on sci fi as a whole who we have lost along the way.
That seems excessive. How many monuments should we have in game and who decides who's important enough to the science fiction genera to add yet even more monuments? This is star trek...let's limit the monuments to star trek characters only.
I don't think the OP is asking in the correct way, but I can certainly understand where s/he is coming from. Carrie Fisher as Princess Leia transcends any one movie or franchise, she is an inspiration to women in general in the same way our own Lt Uhura was a role model for black Americans in a time when that message was so deeply needed. In the same way Uhura changed the perception of what a black person could accomplish and the respect and admiration she could earn, Leia took the damsel in distress / rescue the Princess formula and turned it on its head. Instead of a helpless and weak woman dependent on the male characters, she was a strong woman of action who took command of her own rescue mission and kicked Imperial **** right alongside the guys. That was positively inspirational and impacted the culture as a whole far beyond the bounds of Star Wars fandom.
I don't know if Cryptic can do anything for her given the fact that Leia is a Star Wars character and they don't have license to use her in any way. Leia belongs to pop culture in general and she deserves a tribute here like she does everywhere, but i don't know if that's legally possible. If the devs can find a way to work around the legal issue (even if it's a close "parody" of the character as a fair use tribute) I can certainly see why they might make an exception for this actress of this character because she's so important to so so many, but we can't expect them to do the impossible.
They could simply name an NPC at ESD after her ( a memorial in STO for a SW actor or actress would be too much to ask ) as someone else suggested . It doesn't affect any other part of the game - it is after all just a name - but shows the proper respect . I wouldn't mind that at all and would find it completely appropriate ...
I wasn't being funny. I don't even know what TOR is. That green fellow you keep posting is a npc ferengi if you examine the head, he has the ferengi brow and ears.
You also posted a nanopulse batleth that came out a few years ago from a winter event.
how about no... should SWTOR do something like the plaque in ESD/Qo'nos/NRC? Yes they really should. They've already lost R2D2 and Leia, and the fans&players want something.
Now if a player/guild wants to organize a get together for her, sure, hell someone can do what one person did in SWTOR and make a Leia look-alike.
But this is not something for STO devs to really go near, past perhaps a news item on the website offering condolences and sympathies

TOR aka SWTOR is the star wars mmo, Star Wars The Old Republic
Unless they change the memorial to include a section on non-Trek Sci-fi actors, something that I honestly would not be in favor of (STO should stay Trek IMHO), the only real option they have for acknowledging her would be to have us interact with a female Captain/Admiral Fisher in a new FE at some point (obviously without using her likeness).
^^ This.
I don't want to sound like a negative Nancy, but it's my belief that really only ppl actually associated with Trek should have a memorial. And not just folks from other franchises we may like too. Sorry.
so you think actual dev time should be spent making star wars jokes in game but not to acknowledge carrier fisher?
it is a sad day indeed when people are denying reality and trying to rewrite history to pretend things never happened!
thanks all!
may the force be with us all!!!
I am not trying to rewrite history, stop being a jack TRIBBLE. Nor am I trying to pretend it didn't happen. And no I don't think the devs really should have wasted the time for it in the first place. That said, it happened, it was a decent joke/tribute, and its in the past. No need to go back. What next? Celebrate SWTOR anniversaries too??? Get over yourself.
I can only repeat what people have said already: this is Star Trek. As much as you or I value the contribution of Carrie Fischer to the Sci Fi genre, it is a different thing. And yes, slippery slope argument here, but how about Alan Rickman? He's one of the characters in Galaxy Quest which is adopted into Star Trek somewhat - after all, they share conventions, GQ gets a spot when ST movies are voted, and so on. He also passed away in 2016. But he's no ST actor. This is not about how certain actors do deserve respect for their work, but as with other things, there is a place for them, and there is something that isn't a place. You wouldn't hold a minute of silence during an NBA game for an NHL player, and this is, in my eyes, similar.
My mother was an epohh and my father smelled of tulaberries
so i ask you what is more important: tributing a game launch or tributing the life of a wonderful person?
First of all, there is a major difference between making an allusion and straight out putting somebody on a memorial. And your interpretation of said allusion isn't even clearly correct.
Second of all, Carrie Fischer the person notwithstanding, she doesn't deserve a place in the MLB hall of fame, because she never played in the MLB. Even if the MLB one day had some celebrations about actors playing a role, who were involved with baseball in some respect.
When you ask, what is "more important": neither is. The way an online game handles the memory of her doesn't give or take to either her legacy, nor the game.

The memorial board includes those who worked on Star Trek, not impacted. You can proceed along any direction in human history and find someone who strongly impacted the science fiction genre, either by directly dealing with subject matter sci-fi later addressed (ex. aerospace, electronics, nuclear physics, medicine, ect.) or by creating the historical conditions in which science fiction writers worked (ex. the Cold War). You may feel strongly about the accomplishments of particular individuals but you cannot honor all those who helped shaped sci-fi in the way that the STO memorial does. An honest list would simply be too vast to appreciate, diluting any specific recognition to little more than a vague nod.

By far you rank as the lowest of the low when defending your point of view on these forums, and I have been here a while and seen a lot. I honestly believe now that you only post to stir up the player base for fun. So let me sum up the logic that has been presented:
1.) This is Star Trek, not Star Wars, Carrier Fisher has no reason to be added to the memorals. 2.) If the player base wants to have a party/Memoral in game for her, that is perfectly fine. 3.) If the Devs wanted to include a Doff/NPC in her likeness in the game to honor her, that would be in their area and decision to do so.
If you go back and check ST canon in which I do believe you started a thread on that very subject, I seriously doubt you will find her there.
You are most likely to just copy and paste the response as you have done so far in this thread, so I am not expecting much.
By any chance, did the SWTOR devs put up any sort of memorial for Leonard Nimoy when he died? TBH, I'm asking partly because I don't play that game so am curious. The other reason I ask is because the answer may relate to the debate on whether or not someone like Carrie Fisher should be memorialized somehow in STO.

nope, and they haven't even acknowledged Carrie Fisher's death on their site news, forum, dev tracker, community blog, or twittard

No, and they haven't done one for Carrie Fisher either.

the last bit is making fans ín SWTOR - and on the forums and reddit -mad as hell , I might add .Mainly because they díd have time to update facebook with "commercial " stuff at exactly the time word of Fischer's death came out . Back on topic: I see no reason why naming an NPC in ESD - or elsewhere - after her would be in some way construed as offensive . WOW - the grand old daddy of all MMO's - had huge amounts of NPC's named after persons the devs admired .That isn't a physical memorial ,like the statue of Nimoy , which -I think we can all agree - wouldn't be appropriate at all ( that memorial is for Star Trek, not any other movie or series )
Apparently the guy who invented the Red Solo Cup just passed away, too. I bet stars from both franchises have stayed hydrated at the craft tables on set using these products for decades. RSCs saved or favorite stars from dehydration under the hot stage lights! Perhaps an emote, similar to the Bloodwine emote, could be implemented to honor this influential man?
Truthfully, how about John Glenn? He just died, and he actually went into order space! C'mon people. Memorials in STO should be limited to those directly involved with the franchise.

Also, as far as the Devs paying tribute to a movie goes towards them memorializing an actor from said movie, I look to my hoverboard and wonder... If Michael J Fox passed away, should we expect a memorial? No. Christopher Lloyd? Yes, but it would be because of his involvement in Star Trek, not because the Devs gave us a tribute item to BttF Day.
Yay Kruge!

I don't see the point of a memorial for a non-Trek actor or actress in STO. Maybe you should poat your idea on the TOR forum.

There, fixed that for ya.

The early SW reference, as a joke, was a mere wink to another SciFi Universe making its debut to the gaming world. That's all.
There's a place and a time for everything. Carrie Fisher's death makes this the right time for a tribute, but STO is the wrong place.
