Borg Can Adapt to Cold Damage

velquavelqua Member Posts: 1,220 Arc User
Anyone else notice that the Borg can now adapt to Cold Damage weaponry? Just wondering if this is permanent or temporary.

They've been able to adapt to Cold for a long time now, I'm pretty sure because it's just another type of energy damage. It just wasn't immediately obvious because there were few sources of Cold damage for it to come up. The only reason I'm even aware of it was because of the Nukara Reputation passive that can add it as extra damage to your attacks.

it's been like this for years and they've yet to fix it, despite cold not being energy in real physics
Like special weapons from other Star Trek games? Wondering if they can be replicated in STO even a little bit? Check this out: https://forum.arcgames.com/startrekonline/discussion/1262277/a-mostly-comprehensive-guide-to-star-trek-videogame-special-weapons-and-their-sto-equivalents

I'm not surprised. After all, freezing cold didn't manage to kill two drones in ENT: Regeneration.

They adapt by putting on one of the awesome Winter Event sweaters.

I am pretty sure, that at some point in the as-of-yet not fully told history of the borg, they have assimilated a heater : P

I do however wish modulation would get a looking at, or get a device that works just like the multi piece borg rep sets remod, as the adaptation mechanic only makes fighting borg tedious unless you go boomsticks on them! And that of course, doesn't exactly encourage variety of weaponry.

Not to mention in a few Star Trek Movie's where they are walking in the vacuum of space without an EVA suit.

So obviously the Borg Nanites possibly play a role (slowing/increasing metabolic systems or vibration of atoms creating cooling/warmth) that play a role protecting them from the cold/heat. In space metal alloys in constant sunlight reach two-hundred-sixty (260) degrees Celsius, or an object in the shade can cool down to below -100 degrees Celsuis.

So it wouldn't surprise me if they had resistance to cold damage just like someone said they always had in addition to adapting their shield's to energy weapon damage. Seems at least with borg you're still best to use a TR-116b (Kinetic Damage with 100% shield pen) or Zefram Cochrane Shotgun (Physical Damage) both which bypass shield's or use a MELEE weapon (Physical Damage) as your best options.

Most Kinetic damage will also be greatly reduced by their shield's as will Energy Damage that does not come with remodulation like Omega 3 REP sets provide. Borg are nasty... :s

It's like that but with you stabbing Borg rather than a Borg running around stabbing thing in KDF academy.

That's why you were supposed to get the shotgun with your Phonics Token. Borg do not, I think, adapt to the physical damage the gun does.

Correct, Borg in STO do not adapt to kinetic damage. This is why my Borg hunting always includes a melee weapon.

actually, they adapt to all damage or anything that can harm or kill them. Usually after 1 or 2 dies from said damage, then it doesn't work anymore. Same with projectile weapons. There's one show where they're fighting mobster type aliens who use tommyguns. Doesn't work after a little while. Just like everything else. (not referring to the Holodeck with Picard)

Melee weapons are good for cutting through all types of shielding. Which is always better than the ranged weapons. strange that it works really well against Borg in STO, since it doesn't elsewhere.

Years ago, I farmed Defera for a boatload of Borg crafting components and crafted several stacks of instant remodulators. Combined with the Omega Graviton Pulse Module trait from the Omega rep, and I never have issues with borg adapting to my weapons. Now a days, it is very tedious to collect the crafting components as Defera is really empty. Maybe they should add the instant remodulators to the consumables tab of the Omega rep store.

In the TV shows yes I agree. STO is a different beast, The shotgun works just like a melee weapon in sto. Been using it since I got them from the mirror invasion event when they were released.

You will have to tell me this episode that they adapt to bullets. Having seen all of them, never once have I observed this.

I started a Thread about that about two month's ago. If you look at the Buffs/Debuffs above your Character you will see one labeled 'They've Adapted'. I generally use the Cold Fusion Flash on them (Science Kit Module from Kelvin Lockbox) on Defera followed by a TR-116B or Shotgun, if needed. You really don't but that Flash will kill the four surrounding a Deferi that they wish to assimilate with no further intervention. You must, however, Remodulate BEFORE you fire, otherwise they will adapt. It is utterly devastating to them.

My TOS Temporal Recruit, has all three Winter Wonderland Cold Modules and the Cold Fusion Flash slotted. I use the Omega Ground set so I have the Built-in Remodulation. I will switch out the TR116-B with the CRM-200 Epic XIV and give then a 'cold day in h*ll' the next time I head to Defera. Teach them not to bother the snowmen in the Winter Wonderland. :)

Remodulate before firing and you are good.

What's more annoying: even if you use regular attacks like phaser or antiproton energy weapons, you still get the green 'adapted' letters and visuals. Even when they haven't actually adapted to those energy weapon types and when you are not dealing cold damage.

I only use one cold damage ability yet I get to see 'adapted' all the time, when using all sorts of different weapons just because they have adapted to that one single ability.
  • rattler2rattler2 Member, Star Trek Online Moderator Posts: 58,686 Community Moderator
Cold and Radiation are not standard damage types like AP or Phaser, so as far as I know when the Borg adapt to Cold, the system has a hernia and throws up the adapted alert on everything, even Kinetic and Physical which they cannot adapt to, hence why TRs, Shotguns, and melee weapons other than Nanopulse are so effective.
    I personally recommend stabby death.

You should have seen the "Sword Runs" my fleet used to do on Cure ground. 5 Feds going "Hassan Chop!" and actually completing the STF WITH optional. Best weapons to use were actual swords as you could have that initial charge to get you in there.

Physical is essentially the same as kinetic, the only distinction is ground versus space right?
Because irl ballistic damage is a kinetic force, and i would associate physical with blunt force trauma.

Actually no. The TR-116 specifically says it uses Kinetic, while the shotgun says it uses Physical. Also from what I noticed, while most of the damage from the shotgun DOES hit the HP, a small part actually does hit the shield.

Its odd that a rifle and a shotgun is different, and they make that distinction.
  • rattler2rattler2 Member, Star Trek Online Moderator Posts: 58,686 Community Moderator
Maybe one way to look at it is how the damage is caused. The TR is a sniper rifle, so its only a single bullet. The shotgun is, well... a shotgun, so its spraying buckshot over a larger area. Precision vs Brute Force?

To be fair, the advantage of Borg not being able to adapt to kinetic or physical damage is insignificant imo.

One trait can almost completely counter that ability for most weapon types (full auto rifles being an exception) anyway.
