As a console player [XB1] I'm experiencing the winter event for the first time and I freely admit that my ice-racing skills are just not going to be up to snuff. I've tried and tried following every tip that I could only to ultimately concede that tokens for that free Breen ship aren't coming my way. I'm okay with that!
At least running the commendations missions is giving me plenty of holiday trinkets to purchase winter jackets for my characters; those I've liked although I avoided the gum drop and festive colored versions. I did like the black, brown, and rustler colored options and feel like they give my characters a neat costume option. I decided to send all collected trinkets from each of my characters to a single one to act as a purchasing agent too!
Going to get that endothermic manual before the jig is up and if I'm patient perhaps one of those consoles. Fun all around!
I've been doing the Winter Event for a couple of years now, and I still suck at racing (I know players who've been around since the beginning who admit to being worse ). I've come to basically ignore the tips most players have suggested but came up with one of my own. When doing the race for the tokens, you don't always get an opponent to race against. It may take a few tries before this happens, but when it does I simply take my time and just jog (no sprint and no snow boots) around the track. Since there's no time limit, you can pause to catch your breath at any point.
What? This thing is still here? And from the looks of it, it has not yet degenerated into a "I'm Right and You're Stupid!" thread.
How surprising.
Look, OP, moaning about moaners on the forums here is counterproductive. The time you spend here is much more efficiently and entertainingly used inside the game. When I was a Platoon Sergeant in the US Army, my troopers would complain about having nothing to complain about. If I made a big deal out of it, the complaints became more frequent, and very much more annoying. They were already good time-wasters. Which was my troopers' intent anyways. Me actually noticing them and responding made them far better time-wasters.
The moaners moan because they crave attention. Giving them attention reinforces bad behavior. Yeah, it is emotionally satisfying to go off on some goofball with an IQ and shoe size in matching numbers who has posted something ignorant here. Lord knows I've done it often enough over the years. But I want to ask a few questions, OP:
- Noticing and posting about the moaners will not make them stop moaning. So how exactly does doing these enhance your enjoyment of these forums and the game?
- Time spent here means time taken away from playing STO. And like most of us, I suspect you have about 10% of the free time you want and deserve. So, again, how exactly does doing these things enhnace your enjoyment of the game?
- Yes, it is indeed frustrating when someone publicly acts out and states they are not having as much fun playing STO as they think they should be for some patently ridiculous reason. Are you, OP, under any obligation to defend these knuckleheads from their own stupidity?
I now do some things to lessen the impact this cesspool has on my enjoyment of STO. I severely limit myself to the number of times in a week I visit this giant steaming pile of bovine biological byproduct. I login to the game through the game, rather than through ARC. So I am not tempted to come and stare at the Monkey House. I make an effort to look past the Low IQ threads when I am here. And when I can't stand it any more, I furiously type a scathing response where I cut loose to the best of my vocabulary. Right after doing so, I press <Delete> instead of <Submit>.
Yeah, I know. You've heard or read it countless time before. Doesn't make the advice less valuable or useful though.
tl;dr version - Don't feed the trolls. Don't acknowledge the trolls. This way, you'll be a lot happier with STO and these forums.
A six year old boy and his starship. Living the dream.
Yeah this post is part of the problem. Moaning about other people moaning is still moaning. I have a great strategy for dealing with threads and posts I find annoying. I simply don't read them,
You obviously tried to make a quip, but buddy, it doesn't work as it doesn't make sense.
To Moan: complain or grumble, typically about something trivial. What I am doing is 'complaining'.
Then you are moaning, it was in your OWN definition of the word...
So STO decide to release a lockbox which contains sh*tloads of amazing items WHICH DOESN'T NEED A LOCKBOX KEY TO OPEN, and does everyone whoop with joy?
Uh... I "whooped" with joy. And I didn't even get an Epic or UR, but I still "whooped"!

To cut down on the number of times you need to restart the race, some of the opponents can be beat while at a jog, too. The low-level Breen comes to mind...

Honestly, even the fastest don't need much running to beat. Just run the straights.
I'm with the op on this. People complaining about items that are a reward for minimal effort or FREE really boil my blood. The saying goes 'Never look a gift horse in the mouth'. I mean the regular few who think they are owed the world and think they have the right to impose their will (for example 'If you don't like the post, don't read it') on whomever crosses their path, including on the game-devs themselves!
Remember that as to STO, Cryptic, PWE, and CBS are God's. It's thanks to them that we have a generous Free To Play game that doesn't really on force selling DPS, which would make the game Pay To Win.
If you are going to complain, do it with civility, which is lost on so many people, don't use insults and rage!
Yep, it's pretty much like giving someone a brand new car, and they start kicking the tires.

Same here, I "whooped" a lot. Got emotes I thought I'd never get, got some items only a few of my toons had (like Zepphy's gun, the Red Matter thing, which I only got from Captain Smirk during a live stream 2 years ago), A Risan Corvette (which is very spoofy, I think. ), some Doffs I never realized existed, and a sizable pile of upgrade tokens.
This is like finding the pot of gold at the end of the rainbow, but the Leprechaun actually comes to you and says, "Hey, would you like this pot of gold? I'll even walk you there!"
I'm quite perplexed to see the amount of "this is the forum, it is how it is, get used to it" comments on here. Why are these people so willing to accept this instead of wanting to see change and improvement?
I'm beginning to think that there are lots of victims of bad parenting who play STO, seeing all the spoilt brats always wanting more.....

Even if the only items useable to a player were the upgrades or the boosts there was still something there of value there. Hope they repeat this on a regular basis.

To be fair, there is a phoenix thread where like 95% of the commenters are happy about the box.
The other 5% .. are they really that intolerable ?
Go check some of the Phoenix threads.. You'll see it isn't as dire as you make it out to be.
and what @spiritwalker1969 quoted is something that should be considered. It's an often quoted saying, because there is some truth to it.
Hence, it lives on.
Anyway, I'll keep your words in mind if I have a complaint to air. But, we're never going to get ALL the negativity out of the forums.
Sometimes the negativity can lead to very constructive feedback !
So, it's not all bad, if you look for the silver lining.
Anyway, enjoy your Phoenix goodies. And free Winter ship.
I'm beginning to think that there are lots of victims of bad parenting who play STO, seeing all the spoilt brats always wanting more.....
I'm beginning to think this nasty parting shot of yours is precisely why this thread didn't go all that well for you to begin with: you very quickly resort to blanket personal insults when things don't go your way. Your self-proclaimed 'good-parent' role-model failed. Parents lead by example. 'Be nice, get nice,' and all that.
Sometimes the negativity can lead to very constructive feedback !
So, it's not all bad, if you look for the silver lining.
Actually, this is very true, and something to consider by the OP. In a black-and-white world, there's only positive vs. negative. I see the latter more as pressure. Keeping the pressure on is a good thing. For instance, remember that issue I mentioned, with my boffs hovering way over their seats on Temporal bridges? (Wells-type Temporal, not the new kind) Every year or so I brought it up again. Why, they actually fixed that. Still can't believe it myself, but they did, LOL. Yep, the bug-fixing wheels at Cryptic grind exceedingly slow, but they *do* grind! Point is, of course, bringing pressure to bear helps. Even if they don't fix things directly, somewhere someone is making a note of it (if only a mental one).
People have complained about the Upgrade system. Continued pressure has caused Cryptic to meet us half-way (with all sorts of new and special Upgrade Tech). People have vociferated, loudly, about not being able to get one-time event items. And eventually Cryptic listened. And now ppl are complaining about the saucer separation. I say, more power to them! And, by all means, keep the pressure on!
Could ppl be nicer about it sometimes? Sure. But a professional CM just reports back what he or she sees the community asking (repeatedly). It's not personal. Tl;dr: without all those ppl 'complaining', the aforementioned changes would likely not have occured.

The sentiment expressed is so old that it's the focus of one of Aesop's fables.
Technically, the OP is moaning about moaners, so this whole thread is a bit redundant and cancels itself out.

bah - stop moaning about the moaner moaning.

The comments about 'Don't like the post, then don't read it!' don't really make sense: kinda hard to know if you 'like' a post before reading it (unless the subject is very clear, I suppose). /shrug
But people complain when they're unhappy. That's just the nature of humanity. Venting is often a 'good thing', and venting where other like-minded individuals gather is a time-honored tradition that existed long before online forums did. It's a lot like 'breathing' or 'eating' or 'sleeping' - it just happens and we move on. Honestly, if anything, 'complaining about the complainers' I think just encourages the original complains to complain more. I doubt it will ever silence them.
That said - I LOVED the Phoenix boxes. Spent a sizable amount of dil on them, and got a lot of stuff I am quite happy with. I am sure others spent Dil, didn't get what they wanted, and are upset. And there are those who didn't bother at all because, as they've complained on the forum, the box didn't offer anything they found worthy of the risk. It's a good thing the Phoenix boxes were completely optional, then.
I also love Q's Wonderland. Even if I take big breaks from STO during the year, I always come back for Q. I find most of the events fun, and I think it's kinda cool to 'grind' for a ship I don't have... though I find it difficult to really call it a 'grind': a race once a day that takes ~ a minute, for a few weeks, I don't consider much of a 'grind'. But, different strokes and all that.
Ultimately, it's the holiday season. Try to cheer up and enjoy, and be nice to one another and all that.
This thread (After 4 pages of it) has ran its course, folks - arguing who is moaning and who is not is not adding anything constructive to the discussion pool.
