It sounds as if I am very close to your age. And I agree again.
Granted, I do use Faceache - it's useful for keeping in touch with my Dad, who now lives in Thailand and my Mum who lives in the UK, but around 100 miles away from me.
And this won't be a popular opinion, but from my (admittedly limited) experience, a great deal of the generation that followed us don't seem to be able to live without it as we've had students at my workplace who have openly stated "I couldn't do without Facebook". Sorry - but I think thats a pretty sad.
Well i've got no secrets, I'm 35, so I am one of the few that knows what life was like before the global technological zombification occurred.
its funny that this also reflects in the Star Trek franchaise. in the original movies (and including Picard & Co on this) The crew had their occasional jokes & jibes, but it was VERY occasional, the rest of the time, they respected one another and acted like officers. When I watch the Kelvin version, the so-called "officers" behaved like whiny babies, back-chatting each other, always armed with satirical responses, Spock & Uhura choosing the worst, most inappropriate times to have a whinge about their relationship gripes etc, I mean, aren't they supposed to be OFFICERS? Shouldn't they be behaving professionally? I know that modern movies try to adapt to modern culture, but even in the army, officers would not be behaving like this.
If Star Trek Represents life, and we are currently in the Kelvin Timeline, then I kindly request that Q takes me back to the 23rd century
I hate to think what would happen if Faceache went offline for a day....
Have you forgotten about the great Faceocalyse of January 27th 2015, when users were roaming the streets in tears, shoving photos of themselves in people's faces and screaming 'DO YOU LIKE THIS? DO YOU??
Yeah OP...Don't moan about the moaners.. You're not helping anything and the moaners aren't going to magically read your post, and say; "Yeah, This guy makes complete sense ! I guess I won't make that Complaint thread after all !".
Just won't happen, and you're talking into an echo chamber.
You're also using broad generalized strokes to describe people. AND ironically You're trying to get the "Dig In" here on those who you perceive to be complaining unjustly !
I know many people who appreciate STO for what it is, without expectation. You should cheer up, and try to see past the few who would complain. Then you may realize when people are satisfied they don't complain, nor praise everything.
They are for the most part silent.
This is why the complaints always bubbles to the surface and are most noticable.
It sounds as if I am very close to your age. And I agree again.

Well, I'm actually just a couple of year older than Star Trek itself, so I definitely agree with you. Even though TOS can be somewhat "out-dated" or down-right cheezy by today's media standards, I think the basic philisophy of "can't we all just get along" is just as -- if not more -- relevant today.
I've often joked that, in this day and age of "global communication" even though it's supposedly made the world smaller, people have become more isolated from each other than ever before. As an example, I was riding a bus one day, and there were a couple of college aged ladies sitting in front of me. Not once did they actually talk to each other, but they were "communicating" with each other by texting on their phones. Along with that, when I'm walking the streets I'm often amazed by how many people have their faces planted on their so-called "Smart" phones instead of watching where they're going. Heaven forbid they accidentally bump into someone, because then they rant and rave about the other person "not watching where they were going." It's a sad statement on current society, really.
Yeah this post is part of the problem. Moaning about other people moaning is still moaning. I have a great strategy for dealing with threads and posts I find annoying. I simply don't read them,
You obviously tried to make a quip, but buddy, it doesn't work as it doesn't make sense.
To Moan: complain or grumble, typically about something trivial. What I am doing is 'complaining'.
Nah, 'a rose by any other name...' Others are complaining too: it's just your holier-than-thou attitude that causes you to dismiss the complaints of others as 'trivial' (nice going there, buddy). You think your moan is elevated about the fray somehow, and that calling it 'complaining' lends you some sort of immunity against critique. Others, at least, gripe about something in-game (a ship they couldn't get, a prize they couldn't collect, etc.). But you? You're just 'moaning with a halo:' the worst kind.

So I've just signed up and been reading, and I've got to say, there seems to be a lot of nasty trolls on this forum who deserve banning, so I have to ask, why are they tolerated?
You know what's pretty funny as well OP ?
You actually stooped to "Bragging" your Epic tokens. *smh*
If you were truly sincere about your original post, and not just being a super troll yourself, you surely would have had the good sense and moral fortitude to NOT brag about your Epic token, immediately after taking a dump on those who are moaning about not getting one.
That's pretty low.
And not only that, you have the audacity to bring the old "butthurt" comment.. My God man.
Then you have the nerve to ask "Why we all can't get along ?"
Cause you're an [Self moderated comment]
But hey, you don't complain, so you must be a great person... Good job champ !
As a console player [XB1] I'm experiencing the winter event for the first time and I freely admit that my ice-racing skills are just not going to be up to snuff. I've tried and tried following every tip that I could only to ultimately concede that tokens for that free Breen ship aren't coming my way. I'm okay with that!
At least running the commendations missions is giving me plenty of holiday trinkets to purchase winter jackets for my characters; those I've liked although I avoided the gum drop and festive colored versions. I did like the black, brown, and rustler colored options and feel like they give my characters a neat costume option. I decided to send all collected trinkets from each of my characters to a single one to act as a purchasing agent too!
Going to get that endothermic manual before the jig is up and if I'm patient perhaps one of those consoles. Fun all around!
Hi folks,
I'm keeping my eye on this thread, as it potentially generates chances for a lot of arguments and negativity/Forum rules being broken - but keeping it open for now. Leave personal insults out of the discussion, keep it friendly, mature and civil. Thank you.
~Your Friendly Liberated Borg.
@jodarkrider How about keeping an eye on it for adding exactly ZERO to the signal to noise ratio on these boards. This has NOTHING to do with STO and is a bunch of hipster meta-critique on the nature of human interaction.
Seriously, if there was EVER a candidate for inclusion in the "Frequently Clogging Up These Boards" sticky and cause for auto-erasure, you're looking at it.
Shut it down and we can actually move on.
At MINIMUM bury its steaming carcass over in Ten Forward. This sub-forum is for stuff actually about the game, last I checked.
Op, you REALLY wouldn't like the Steam STO forum then. There are a lot of nice people there, but then there a few (and I'm thinking of one individual in particular) who does nothing but comment on any thread about how the game sucks and anyone who doesn't agree with him/her is a moron. Funny thing I asked this person in all sincerity why they spent so much time in a game forum whinging about a game that they think sucks. Why not find a game you enjoy to spend your time on? You can guess how it went from there.
People are going to complain about everything, especially on a game forum. Sometimes its valid, sometimes its just whining to whine.
Sadly this is the direction almost all gaming forums have gone over the past, oh, 10 years now I guess. I literally can't remember a time when forums weren't full of people complaining about every little thing they don't like, across practically every game I've played or followed over the last decade. Some are bad, some not so bad (like here, this place is very tame), some are BAD claw your eyes out BAD.
"OMG Another breen ship? I don't like. I want something else!"
I actually agree with this. Be nice if they offered faction specific ships instead of generic nobodies. Also some ships don't have custom bridge packs when they do these promotions *cough*Risian Ships*COUGH* so thats even less incentive for me to bother with them.
Curiously you thought it was important enough to waste a few minutes of your time complaining about a post complaining about complainers, you'll pardon me a moment whilst I stop giggling.
Your privilege, since you seem to want to have it both ways . Moaning about moaning about moaning about moaning...
Yeah I agree with the OP and I also thought it wouldn't be long before someone drops the inevitable "can't you see the irony in moaning about others moaning" line. I'm very tired of that worn out fallacy, it's perfectly acceptable to make observations about other people's behavior and to highlight it in this manner.
It is perfectly acceptable... its just not TOPICAL. We have a place for that, and its over in Ten Forward.
Curiously you thought it was important enough to waste a few minutes of your time complaining about a post complaining about complainers, you'll pardon me a moment whilst I stop giggling. I don't agree it's clogging up the boards, nor are posts like it, they appear from time to time and sometimes interesting observations on the playerbase, other MMOs and humanity in general are brought to our attention. If you don't like the post then you're free to ignore it and move on, for those of us who find it interesting I would appreciate it if you can let us satiate our curiosity without have to first trawl through the depths of the forum trying to relocate it.
You'll pardon me a moment whilst I stop giggling too, as the irony of your post was just too much. You realize I completely agree with you, right?! This forum should definitely allow a myriad of differing opinions. Was there something in your life which caused you to be unable to grab that Crystalline Torp in time? Sure, that could be a reason to be upset. Or you wanted that Corvette, but couldn't get it? What's pretty unimportant to me, to others may be a sore they wish to express. There's absolutely no reason to summarily dismiss the complaints of others as 'trivial' or 'moaning', for no greater reason than that their beefs aren't mine per se. Me? I have on occassion griped about, say, my boffs hovering, like 1m, above their seat, in my Temporal vessel. I'm sure such a thing was trivial to many, but to me it was something that bothered me. Likewise, I completely accept that others may have issues with the game that are important to *them*. To each their own.
Now for the *real* irony, the advent of the Phoenix box actually directly falsifies the opinion of the OP, as it would appear Cryptic realized maybe not all gripes were totally unreasonable; and that maybe it really *was* a bit harsh to not offer a second chance to obtain the ship/item of your dream, ever. Personally, I feel I possess almost everything of value in this game already, so I'm good; but for those who missed out earlier, I'm glad Cryptic offered this 'take-two' opportunity to others.
And then there are those who moan about the moaning, and people like me who moan about those who moan about the moaning! Where will it end?
More moaning, hopefully in a good way?

Friends, Posters, STO Players, lend me your ears; I come to bury Moaning, not to praise it.
All my 14 characters, including a Level 3 were able to get all the Tribbles, Emotes, Consoles, Weapons, Kits, and Doffs that they did not already have. I got one Epic Token which I downgraded to two URs, and picked up a Bulwark and JHAS for two Characters. In addition I picked up close to 480 Phoenix Upgrades. Thanks to the Dilithium Market price drop I also picked up 4,000 Zen to be traded back in for Dilithium when it goes back into the 400s.
So there is nothing but praise for this Phoenix Prize Event. For Moaning, just bury it already.

I'm with the op on this. People complaining about items that are a reward for minimal effort or FREE really boil my blood. The saying goes 'Never look a gift horse in the mouth'. I mean the regular few who think they are owed the world and think they have the right to impose their will (for example 'If you don't like the post, don't read it') on whomever crosses their path, including on the game-devs themselves!
Remember that as to STO, Cryptic, PWE, and CBS are God's. It's thanks to them that we have a generous Free To Play game that doesn't really on force selling DPS, which would make the game Pay To Win.
If you are going to complain, do it with civility, which is lost on so many people, don't use insults and rage!
"You don't want to patrol!? You don't want to escort!? You don't want to defend the Federation's Starbases!? Then why are you flying my Starships!? If you were a Klingon you'd be killed on the spot, but lucky for you.....you WERE in Starfleet. Let's see how New Zealand Penal Colony suits you." Adm A. Necheyev.
Hello, mr White Knight wannabe.
If you don't like the moaning, then just turn off chat for a bit. Or ignore those you deem to be "moaners". Or go outside. The graphics are lovely this time of year.
Ah, so by your rationale, If I hold values that make me appreciate gifts and gratis-based stuff, that makes me "Holier than thou?"
No, the fact that you think your 'complaint' is valid and real, whilst you dismiss everyone else's as trivial and moaning, makes you 'holier than thou.' At least others don't come with the pretence of doing anything else than complaining.
If having a "halo" means that I am someone who appreciates things in life, and not to "bite the hand that feeds me",
Nah. You just bite everyone else's hand, is all. You're not just content with what you have: you're discontent with others. What separates you from the rest, though, is that others just do their regular complaining, whilst you, in a grandiose attempt to elevate yourself above everyone else, complain about others. Like the forum world has never seen that before.
If you don't like the event, then DON'T PLAY IT
Physician, heal thyself! "If you don't like someone's post, DON'T READ IT!"
Oh hey look, it's a pseudo-intellectual hipster pretending to play devil's advocate when their fallacious non-argument has been called out. I bet you didn't see that coming.
"I'm sorry, I can't hear you over the sound of how awesome I am."
Unfortunately this is the way of the world today. You only have to look at the comments on a Facebook post about many many things and it's full of people complaining or trying to get a dig in, many do it behind a semi-transparent wall of animity that they think the internet gives them, many are bare faced trolls suffering from schadenfreude syndrome, others are just nasty ungrateful narcissists around whom the entire universe revolves.
Forums and social media have simply pulled back the curtain on this long-time pervasive tendency of the most vocal people to be selfish and nasty to others, it was always there before but there was never the outlet for it, and of course 95% of these type of people would never dare say a fraction of the things they say face to face.
Self-entitlement, moaning for moaning sake, moaning because they think it improves their standing with their peers, schadenfreude fuelled rants, whatever the reason, it's here to stay. As a Dev you just have to ignore it, soak up the praise, address any real genuine issues and accept that there are a lot of people out there who are really only happy when they are complaining, feel sorry for them, and then get back to the job in hand.
Rhetorical perfection, nothing else need be said.
"I'm sorry, I can't hear you over the sound of how awesome I am."
It's a gaming forum. I mean, what can you expect, really? I say, just ignore the moaning. It's been around since time immemorial and it's highly unlikely to ever go away, on this forum or any other, and we can't do much else about it, so I say just pay it no attention.
I'm nothing but happy with this Phoenix event as I was finally able to get all the stuff that I missed out on before and never thought I'd ever be able to get (e.g. the shotgun and the Red Matter Capacitor). And a bunch of *very* nice upgrades, with which I was finally able to get all my gear upgraded to Mk 14 at no dil cost. So I'm pretty happy with it.

If you are going to complain, do it with civility, which is lost on so many people, don't use insults and rage!
Based on my experience of the last 10+ years? No.
Not only is this an Internet Forum, but it's an Internet Gaming Forum. Their purpose is moaning.
(...also, how is "It's a Dil sink" moaning? That's the whole point of the Phoenix pack. /confused)
If you don't like the moaning, then just turn off chat for a bit. Or ignore those you deem to be "moaners". Or go outside. The graphics are lovely this time of year.
Oh hey look, it's a pseudo-intellectual hipster pretending to play devil's advocate when their fallacious non-argument has been called out. I bet you didn't see that coming.
Rhetorical perfection, nothing else need be said.
Oh, look, I'm a hipster now. Why, considering I recently changed my ingame name to Maxine Caulfield, I actually feel flattered now. How's that for RP!? Looks like I did something right. :P
