New fall engine update to fix FPS issues?

We're all looking forward to the new graphical upgrade for the STO engine (unless you aren't...)
Is there any solid information on whether or not the framerate issues will be fixed?

What framerate issues are these you ask?
Im talking about people who have high tier rigs with top line video cards (such as the GTX 1080) like myself who sit in graphically intensive areas of the game at 30FPS or less (even if I set all the graphics down to their lowest), when we can run other games that are far more graphically intensive and power hogging than STO is at 60FPS or far above.

My fear is cryptic leaving the FPS issues to the wayside and implementing the new Graphic upgrades to the engine, and have it run even less smoothly than it does now.

    Its not just high end cards, i got a mid range card & have to turn the graphic's down to min.

    That's funny: I've don't exactly have a prime gaming setup... an HP Elitebook 8560w with an i7 (quad core) and an NVidia Quadro m1000 running Win7 Pro (64). By most gaming standards, it's "good enough"... By default, my Graphics Detail (CPU) is on Max, and my Render quality (video card) auto sets to Low at .75 render scale.

    Whenever I turned Render Quality to max (and render scale to 1.0) it used to overheat and go into protection shutdown after about 15 minutes, but never really had any in-game performance issues aside from that... However, ever since I cleaned out the bottom of my laptop and got a new cooling pad that issue has gone away completely. I'm on Max/Max and running just fine. At the worst, I get a half-second delay during cut-scenes when the sprites and field-of-view objects are still loading.

    Some AMD users haven't been able to use DX11 for a year now. Shows how much attention things like this get.

    So i am not alone in this..

    This program, though reasonably normal at times, seems to have a strong affinity to classes belonging to the Cat 2.0 program. Questerius 2.7 will break down on occasion, resulting in garbage and nonsense messages whenever it occurs. Usually a hard reboot or pulling the plug solves the problem when that happens.

    I know that this is an issue and it needs fixing no doubt, but it seems to me that it is a problem afflicting mostly newer Nvidia GPUs. When I read about FPS problems, it almost always seems to be a problem with high end Nvidia GPUs like 960, 970 and now 1080.
    Personally I have an intel i5 and a Radeon 6990, have everything on maximum and only ever experianced a significant FPS drop in 2 maps of some delta quadrant missions.
    It seems that cryptic is maybe not keeping up with newer GPUs and drivers, but I don't think that there is something wrong in general with the engine.

    I have the same worry myself OP, I have a 90ti in my system with a 4790K cpu. On ESD I get below 60fps on medium graphics, hell in the new STF Days of Doom during the planet killer section the FPS drops to below 10. Simply unacceptable.

    Is DX11 better for STO? People were telling me it wasnt.

    There is.

    The game is clearly unoptimized. The range of FPS i get from area to area is insane. Some areas I'll get above 100 FPS. Mostly on ground I will get 18 or lower, and for no aparent reason either.

    Whats more, the UI eats FPS for breakfast.

    All the while I can run better games at a much higher FPS on ultra.

    This engine needs optimized. Pure and simple.

    The game runs great on my machine once I manage to log in. But if I don't set graphics to minimum before exiting or go to safe mode, it freezes on the splash screen the next time I launch it.

    I'm facing the same problem as the OP. Risa is dropping to 8fps (EIGHT!) on max. Details. And since I can run BF4 on max Details with stable 60fps (I play with Frame-Rate-Limiter) I would expect reaching the same result in STO.
    Please guys, fix this! And I would not mind if I got to use DX11 without crashing every 10 minutes.

    You mean the new graphical upgrade which makes the graphics worse! Like a lot of people I am not looking forward to it based on what's been shown so far.

    The UI eats FPS for breakfast for some reason it causes a lot of problems if i have more than one ui window open at a time

    the game is absolutely fine and whatnot, until you get into STF's and any other event where the screen is cluttered with absolutely useless effects.

    also if you hit Escape, you'll see your FPS skyrocket because the UI is absolutely under-optimized.

    still, what you describe is true for you, no doubt, but it ain't for me...at least not on the level it's described in this post and others. I know only of 2 maps where my framerate drops significantly. So if it is happening for a number of people, and for a number of people it doesn't, what could be the conclusion from it?

    I'm not claiming that the game engine couldn't be optimized, but since the problem seems to effect even some high end rigs and some others it doesn't, it seems unoptimized engine is probably only one problem.

    I've suspected for a few years now that the games shader system, struggles with alpha channels and transparencies on some systems, so the new lighting system might make things better or could just as easily make it worse.

    I've been playing STO on the same rig since it went F2P, so my GT430 is getting on a bit, yet even today it has no problems running max graphics on most maps, I do run with the frame rate limited to 30 and bloom turned off though.

    It's only on the maps where the Art department have gone nuts with the plants, see through surfaces and/or atmospherics (ie fog, particle matter floating in the air) that my frame rate crashes.​​

    I'm running a pair of gtx 970's and my sons running a pair of gtx 760's and in some maps both of us are barely into double figures on both machines. A recent run through cca resulted in mid single digit fps rates. Do I think the new updates will solve anything? I've gotta say no. I think they're pushing the limits of this game engine is capable of.

    We've had issues for the past couple of years because it can't keep up with what's happening in game. And we seem to get the same generic response in that it's got to be a players system at fault. Just wonder how well it'll perform when it's ported to consol . Although the range of possible hardware combinations will be significantly reduced.
    Oh, it's not broken? We can soon fix that!

    Nope, its been so long most people have just become quiet about it. I don't believe anyone working on this game ever acknowledged it as a problem.

    Instead of acknowledging the problem, and implementing a solution of either:
    A) optimize the game engine and UI, or
    B) acknowledge it is beyond Cryptic/PWE's capacity and/or funding to ever fix and simply cut back on completely unnecessary graphics beginning with polygon spam,

    They sit on it unacknowledged as they have for years and make it worse by bringing the same FPS crippling mission designs as in Delta Rising missions into the new STFs, but wait! There's more! We're using up our resources for consoles now, and PC users still get a bone with some cool new shaders since clearly that's what everyone's been dreaming about forever now.

    Yeah, I have to resort to childish sarcasm, cause there's no other way to regard this utter neglect or incompetence.

    Thanks Cryptic/PWE for giving me fewer reasons to log on and play your game and waste even more money and time in it.

    it is a dream. I spend my time of having direct 3d errors, and I use directx11. And never an answer from the devs, NOTHING.

    They said in an interview it will not support DirectX 12 or even 11. It supports DirectX 9 now and I think they are working on making it support DirectX 10

    Oh yeah, most of all as we might see even more developement for the game in more areas than just the ships they put out, and fed side of the game as well. Right now alot of the resources an money go into areas that would create an keep profit coming in, with a much smaller amount going int other areas that generate less money.

    got a new R390x stryx and STILL gotta use dx9. had 3 lockups/crashes since starting the new episode AoY

    In Win7 I could use DX10 or 11, not sure which.

    Now in Win10, I'm unable to use it. It's all DX9 now - I have to use a command line in the launcher to be able to play the game, which is unfortunate really.

    Also, downgrading my graphics driver hasn't helped either.

    I hope the new upcoming graphic upgrade will fix some of these issues.
