Still amazed at the folks who think a small-time company like Cryptic can prevent DDoS attacks when the freaking Pentagon gets successfully hit about twice a year.
I think we had this conversation before, but...other MMO's aren't knocked down this often. So, why cite the Pentagon when we can just cite other MMO's that are don't suffer as badly when they are attacked? Like you pointed out last time, it has something to do with having multiple server clusters, right?
The fact remains that the nature of the attack makes it hard to combat in the first place. Yes multiple locations mean its harder to take down, but still...
The best way to defend against a DDoS attack is to simply have more bandwidth than the attacker could ever generate, in which case the attack does nil. Not always possible.

Right right. But the point is, other companies *have* done things to make this harder to do. Cryptic, apparently, hasn't. So you can't really argue that there is nothing they can do when others have done more.

UK has had banks & ISP attacked in the past 4 months.
ok so right now the guy has them by the short and curlies, but do you really believe he isnt going to get caught? Every time he attacks he gets closer to a guy who wants to call him Julie!

As I recall, it's been pointed out several times now--at least--that Cryptic simply does not have the resources the other big-name MMO companies do. You can hardly compare them with Blizzard or EA in that regard.

I believe Cryptic was purchased by a pretty huge company. So we really don't know how much resources could be brought to bear if PW actually decided to do it.

Didn't this guy turn out to be from outside the US? Makes it a lot harder for Cryptic to get at him through legal means.

quite a lot of these are done by groups and even when an individule manages to breach these step are puti n place to reduce these attacks.

Actually... I can. Cryptic isn't as big as some other companies, so they have fewer resources. Blizzard, for example, has LOTS of resources to counter this sort of thing. So its not exactly fair to assume everyone has the same amount of resources available to them.
Hypothetical situation: if I was to DDoS you, would you have the same resources as a large company?
Answer: No.
Similar situation here. Cryptic doesn't have the same resources available. They do what they can with what they got. Over time they may get access to those resources as they become more successful.

I'm just glad you have moved beyond your "there is nothing anyone can do against a DDOS attack" argument from last week. At least you are making progress in the right direction now.
Yes, we are aware. It's complicated and very involved. That being said this is something we are taking very, very seriously.
We won't comment on any details of our security operations in response to this as to do so would potentially compromise security measures taken/taking.
I am reiterating the necessity of following the Community Rules and Policies. If you begin to flame or threaten others in this thread, this is highly inappropriate.
I really like this game, but my God. Every day something is TRIBBLE up. Make me realize how well another MMO has their stuff together.
Not their fault directly - DDoS attack. Although they don't seem to have put anything in place to counter it either (especially considering the loser who is doing it was boasting about doing so), so...
how come WOW manages to overcome the ddos idiots and PW can't? oh wait, PW don't wanna get surplus servers and "waste" money, instead they think its cool to waste our time... without any hesitation

Wow doesnt "overcome" them, they still suffer, we are at near 1 hour now, wow has suffered worse.

WoW is also one heck of a lot bigger, if I'm not mistaken. Bigger than STO itself, anyway. Size matters here.

WoW is run by Blizzard, a LARGE company with LOTS of resources. Neverwinter and STO are run by Cryptic, which is no where near as big. PW just happens to be the company who owns Cryptic.

Im sure some swedish official is ready to assist
what exacly are you implying? that its allowed to ddos someone from sweden. its not. we have jails too. and id like to put this guy in the gulag for what he does.

SWTOR to my knowledge hasn't had an attack like this and they are about the same size.
of course bioware are owned by EA which is a large company but also hated by many so im surprised its not attacked more often.

They may hate EA, but I think Bioware is loved for not skimping out on story. *shrug*

most don't even understand what a DDos attack is. Or the expense involved in mitigating their effects.
Patience IS NOT one of my characteristics! It's been a not very good week at work. I was hoping to spend some quality time unwinding for a bit in STO. I can see that once again, this is not possible due to circumstances which seem to be beyond anyone's control.
It is really frustrating. I don't want to threaten or harm anyone, but dammit, Man! Go get a life! I have a spare if you'd like to borrow it.
