How Do You STO?

xapocalypseponyxxapocalypseponyx Member Posts: 577 Arc User
A question I've been wondering for a while now. I'm in a couple fairly large fleets. Both Alphas of full Armadas, with channels connecting the whole lot of them. Even with access to all of that, it's pretty much a non-starter getting any activities going. Same thing is echoed in the game at large. I see lots of players, but frankly can't figure out what they are doing. (Although at the given time I know many are grinding away at Omega)

I know we all do many different things in STO, but what is it that you spend the majority of your time logged in doing? And if you care to answer the follow up question, is it what you want to be doing, or is there something else you would rather do but can't/won't due to some issue or another.

For myself, it's PvE Multiplayer. While this is indeed what I prefer doing, I do wish the queues were more active. I would love to one day log in and see 1)Rewards that were tweaked for length and difficulty of each queue and 2)Queues packed with players!

I would agree with this and add one more feature. Namely, some variety in mission objectives that arent just shoot to kill that actually encourage builds and playstyles other than moar kill stuffz!!

A bit of everything except PvP (they killed it - I play/seek other games for pvp fun) or foundry author. Role play is also minimal, or at least I don't go out of my way to do so other than having specific characters that occasionally step into their species roles, bios, fleet themes and such, so that's 'light.' For an mmorpg one cannot 'not' role play in some way or another no matter what you do.

Farm/Play the Market is what I do mostly, and it used to be a lot of fun when the Dil Ex was towards the more reasonable 200-250 range. I joined when it was 150 and end game ships were T5 (2,500 zen + FSM + ship slot). It was great flying around the galaxy to do some foundry missions with fleets with investigate officer reports (till they nerfed that to the ground to the point of even removing the specific mission altogether - the Sword of Kuvamagh (sp?) was a great one for the challenge), mining, Nimbus dailies, Traelus sat repair, pug STFs or with fleet.

Now Dil floods in from almost anything we do, C-Store/Lobi Store costs keep going higher to the point of false marketing (Leeta Uniform and box picture doesn't unlock full Leeta set, Brotlh BoP skin doesn't work on Brel/Kor, 'T6' Tholian Meshweaver lockbox spam doesn't sound accidental), Dil sinks are punishing and forced gambling for quality upgrades (Lockboxes give out lobi 100% of the time with minimum 4 per box), the EC Exchange has become a monopoly for many items, bugs looming on the horizon that go unfixed but get reported as fixed anyways (Karfi skin, dry docking bug locking people into shuttles, reports of items vanishing, revamped mail system that still eats attachments, crashes, etc.), power creep on overdrive, out of hand immunities, Tac/FAW DPS centered gameplay where every ship can do everything, pace of gameplay that's way too rushed throwing strategy and team work out the window, nerfs for rare/expensive items (what's going on with Kemo? Embassy plasma consoles fiasco), perpetually broken items (have cannon procs been fixed yet?), etc.

Considering all that, the Farm/Play the Market for resources is now really punishing and I guess catching up to and being lost in the sea of most other grind-heavy MMOs. The gameplay itself where the trinity is just about dead for both ship and ground classes, game pace on overdrive, team dynamics all about maximizing DPS only, it is all reduced to Space Barbie which, while visuals are an essential part of any MMO, becoming just that and only that is sad.

I am also seeing a lot less competent players on the forums, meaning those who did the parsing and payed attention to ensure abilities work as intended and haven't been stealth-nerfed or bugged must have moved on already. My one proposal to buff the Paradox to appropriate levels considering its class and cost was buried in this sea of noise. Even comments on new ship releases are slowing down to a few pages, whereas before I could go though tens of pages of interesting discussions popping up immediately, so even the 'true end game STO' which are the forums are showing a decline.

This isn't to say Doom, but to try to predict where my 'How Do You STO?' is going considering my experience and observations as listed, and I've not been here all that long but have put in a ton of time and considerable cash in the game so do hope it continues for a long time on if only to make the most of the fruits of 'Farm/Play the Market.'

If I could come up with a formula to describe the state of things, the grind/boredom-risk variable has overshadowed the fun gameplay rewards given gameplay and game content stagnation paired with continuing trends.

Little bit of everything except PvP, roleplay, foundry author. Also no intention of doing one of those 3 anytime soon.

Mostly pve. But for an ftp game (even if I'm a lifer) it is becoming quite expensive. I have purchased all the KDF ships, almost all of the Romulan ships and maybe 75% of the Federation ships but I think I will stop buying them for a while. Being from Canada, the current exchange rate is a good deterrent. The new cross faction bundle would cost over $140 just for ships... in a computer game. At the end of the day it's less butter on the table. But I still love the game.

My focus lies on PvE, Doff/Admiralty, Space Barbie, managing my fleet and.. taking lots of screenshots and posting them in the "EPIC Screenshot Thread is EPIC" thread. :)

Doff/admiralty while listening to music is mostly what I do( a bit of fleet management too). I like to queue up for PVE multiplayer or run through a BZ if I feel like actively playing. I would probably do more PVE queues if the rewards were better beyond the daily bonus. The daily bonus makes me only want to do 1 thing for 1 type of mark a day because the normal rewards are mostly less than the daily and even elite queue rewards feel weak for the effort.

Your poll is too narrow. I do several of the things listed with a lot of time put in them. And it changes for me.

My account is Launch Day old. I've collected many ships, consoles over the course of this game's history. C-Store, Lobi, Lockbox, Events, you name it, I have a large collection. Even stuff I have no interest in for an event I'll grab because I may want to use it later on. Or what's been happening the last 2 years, Cryptic's cut-off new access to some of the old stuff, so it's always a good idea to grab these freebie event rewards.

PVE? Solo quite a bit at times but multiplayer in the queues, even PUGs, is the norm.

I socialize in some of the channels out there. Whether the discussion is civil or we argue about the FOTM topic, it's still socializing B)

On major updates with tailor changes, I spend a stupid amount of time tweaking the appearance of my captains and the BOFFs. Or find out what the latest patch has stealth-nerfed / broke at the tailor.

PVE Solo is my focus, but most of my time is spent on PVE Multiplayer and DOffing/TRIBBLE/Admiralty.
SO the answers are limiting and not truly representative of my time and focus.

I do most of it...cept I don't really play the exchange and haven't ever made anything with the foundry. I've PvP'ed a little but I don't do it much.

I guess it is a bit of a pick'n'mix for me - I am part of a fleet leadership team, so seem to spend a lot of time on occasion just checking on fleet projects or chatting with the other leaders. On the other side of the coin I will do solo content and also multiplayer PvE. I can't really seem to get into the PvP side of things though and I guess this probably stems from being part of a FPS gaming clan previously where there was a highly competitive element to things with participation in various leagues - this did at one point lead to over-involvement with several nights each week being devoted to matchplay, so the competitive edge is well and truly blunted. That said, I am in-game most nights but this is more related to (i) the need to de-stress and (ii) boredom - my wife has a long-term health issue which means I am her full-time carer and also makes it difficult to have an active social life that doesn't impact further on her health - shooting a few Borg etc is good for the state of mind when things get stressed.

That's fine that you do a lot of different things. I also do many of the things listed. The idea was not that you do one thing to the exclusion of the others, but just if you could identify one thing you tend to do more. I, like most I'm sure, do many different things, even from day to day, but I can identify Multiplayer PvE as what I tend to go for most often.

Saying your time is evenly spread among several activities is a valid answer. It's just that displaying every combination would have made for quite a lengthy poll. :)

I'm not much into RP, PvP, or Foundry Writing.

Otherwise, my answer would be "All of the Above."

I farm contraband on my kdf alts turn it in on fed alts for dilithium to pay for new junk on my main. Always trying out new gear and such. I mostly enjoy doing space queues with peeps in my fleet. I also use to do a lot of pvp, but DR put an end to that. :-\

The ONLY thing I do in this game for fun is teamed PvE as in queues. I don’t care if I meet good or bad players because I’m good enough to play with both extremes without being annoyed. Most fun is of course doing that with friends and fleet mates but pugs are simply too spicy not to include.

Any other activity in STO I do is considered grind if it takes longer than 5 minutes a day and is only pursued by me to have more fun in teamed PvE later on.

      Queue up peeps!!!

Through the Captain's Log, I create a story line for my character and try to weave in traveling to various areas on the sector maps that I write in as "orders" that have been given by superiors. So, in a sense, I'm writing a story, sort of RP without having to interact much with other players. In the course of all this, I access the Exchange and sell anything valuable that I don't want or can't use, I PvE in various queues, I continue to do Admiralty missions and often work their themes into my own story arc, I upgrade equipment (both space and ground) which also becomes part of my Captain's Logs, I do DOFF missions constantly (I see these as a duty roster with accompanying orders from the ship's commander, and I also try to accomplish accolades. On occasion I will pop in on Kerrat to see what's going on.
