One of my acquaintances has gotten this and says it's a thank you for veteran players. Others say it's the "please come back and play" bribe.
whats goin on here?
It's probably for the players that have been inactive for a long time, just like it was for myself. I haven't played for about several months and they gave me T6 Andromeda (Galaxy) for free and I got back to game. But even so I'm grateful for that as it was nice surprise for me and I was planning to return at some point anyway.

So, again. While it is completely fine for Cryptic to offer free stuff to try to get former players to come back, they should not be treating some current players differently than others.
IMHO, they shouldn't treat their players different at all. If they can give players who left the game and didn't support it in any way while they were away a free ship, they should give the same ship to active players too.
That way, they'd still be able to lure players back into the game, while the active players who are actively supporting the game don't feel discriminated against. I'm really wondering who makes these kind of decisions. Surely they could understand and predict that active players wouldn't like this? So why treat players different at all?
The reasoning some people are following that 'active players got a lot of free stuff too in the meantime' isn't exactly fair either; those players still had to do something, log in regularly, check the news etc. to be aware of such promos, while those that left the game entirely for a while didn't have to care for the game at all for months.
So, again. While it is completely fine for Cryptic to offer free stuff to try to get former players to come back, they should not be treating some current players differently than others.
Well this is the thing, I know of players who play every day like I do, yet they got the T6 Defiant and I didn't..
That is when it irks me, as they should release it for everyone, or none at all.

Maybe LaughingTrendy could poke one of the Devs with her stick to see why some active players seem to be getting it and not others?
Well i just hope cryptic are just a bit behind with senidng out the emails because it makes no sense to not reward some of the players and yet reward others with no logic or method behind it.

I'm with you this.
I have been playing for years, I log on almost every day and over the years I have spent a considerable amount of money playing STO. Personally, I would like to know what exactly it is that makes these other veteran players more deserving then I am.
Whenever you start to give different people different levels of preference, you're going to create negative feelings from those who aren't 'chosen.' It's definitely not a practice that Cryptic should embrace going forward. It's one thing to try and get former players back, it's another to create sub-divisions among those that are already here.

I doubt the Devs are involved in this. Most likely someone from the promotions or management departments who have little to do with actual game development.
I got it yesterday and I've been playing consistently for a few weeks now. It said it was a "thank you for elite captains like you" It didn't say anything like "come back to us" or anything like that.
So, I'm not an elite Captain then?! LOL.
I guess it's official now and you can put it in your signature.
Free T6 Defiant?! Already have one, but, erm, isn't it kinda the Bizarro World to reward ppl who *don't* play, and ignore your loyal customers?! LOL.
Remember this is Cryptic/ PWE were talking about, all they care about is the metrics and getting people to log in, why bother with players who already log in when they can give incentives to people who dont play to log in.
Its crazy but this is the cryptic/PWE way of things.
It's not crazy at all.
You understand the concept of advertisement, right? The advertisements are not made for people already buying a product. They are made to get people to buy the product that don't buy the product.
And you know advertisement is a billion dollar business - a lot of money is spend on people that don't buy the product, instead of spending it to the benefit of the "loyal" customer.
Cryptic's advertisement has the big advantage that it costs them less, the less effective it is. A person turned loyal customer with a good advertisement campaign is more likely to get something out of a free ship, and this is a ship he will definitely not spend money on anymore, since he already has it.
Someone that doesn't get back into the game despite the ad would never have bought the item in the first place, so no sales are lost.
Basically, Cryptic can hardly lose here.
All the rest of the money, Cryptic already spends on its "loyal customers", by releasing new content, new systems, bugfixes, and offering stuff that can be attained in game without costing the player anything.
What im talking about is crazy as compared to actual common sense, common sense would say reward your loyal players to keep them wanting to play and coming back for more.
Crazy sense says reward former players who may or may not return to the game and if they do they may not stay long once the shiny loses its luster.

well my mate try STO loong time ago , last year got "free" T6 too ( andromeda i think )
he dont have any interest play STO , so he just log in , claim ship and bye STO , never logged again
btw , all my chars are KDF , so for me is ANY fed ship useless
Yea I didn't get one... Can I get one too please? Or maybe someone can give a definitive explanation as to who does and does not qualify for this giveaway?
Look, doing this kind of thing brings back old players, who will either ignore it or react. If they ignore it, Cryptic lose nothing apart from running whatever choosing mechanism it is they do.
If the old player comes back, they may only stay for a short time; if so, you at least got them to log in, which matters for metrics. However, they may decide to stick around.
The longer they stick around, the more chance they have of either buying something, or encouraging someone else to buy something. They may still decide to go, but again, the metrics were boosted for their duration.
It works, it's why I'm posting now, because they gave me an Andromeda and skill points to take one of my characters to 60 last year. And I'm still here. Ok, all I do is doffing and admiralty with maybe once a day space stuff as a single player, but that still looks good on metrics because the lag I suffer -which only part of it is Cryptic, my laptop is getting on in years now and just doesn't run as well as it used to- means it takes an hour and a half to cycle through my 9 doffing capable characters...
Rewards should be for everyone. It still encourages old players to come back just as well as rewarding current players. However, making this only for players who are inactive leaves us with this weird incentive to be inactive to get a prize....

It does feel like a slap in the face, when they choose to reward players who don't even support the game.
And no, we active players really don't get free ships, we still have to grind and EARN the event ships, while it seems these little promo emails basicly serve up expensive ships on a silver platter, no effort involved.

It is not a 'slap in the face'. That would be assault. Which means pwe/cryptic employees could be arrested and sent to jail.
It is also not any of the other things pwe/cryptic has been accused of by small minded people with no real life.
InterWeb hyperbole. Most likely brought on by a badly over developed sense of entitlement.
News flash! None of us really are the 'special snowflakes' our Mommas said we are.
It is what it is and that is all it is. How many of those people who got the free T6 were not active during the Winter Event?
How many were not active during the Summer Event? How many of them were inactive during the giveaway last week?
I've been playing this game since 2012. I've earned nearly everything I have right now and this includes nearly all of the giveaways between then and now. LTS players can get the Chimera. I am not LTS so I cannot. Them having something I cannot get does not diminish my enjoyment of this game by a single quatloo. Why? Because at the end of the day, they are fellow STO players and probably Star Trek fans to boot. I'm happy they have the newest T6 Fed Escort to use. It means they might play the game some more. It also means they might also spend some real currency on STO. Which means the servers live to play another day.
It is my belief that Gene would be ashamed of some of the people around this game who purport to be, ahem, "fans".

Yeah, that's the thing that's a mite weird. Not like I need a T6 Defiant (already have one), but next time, Cryptic, if active players are getting one too again, please kindly deposit 3,000 Zen into my account.

They do that all the time. Winter Event, Summer Event, Anniversary Event => Free Ships
Mirror Incursion Event, Crystalline Event, Dilithium Weekend, Mark Weekends.
Anniversary Giveaway, Thanksgiving Giveaway.
The year is full of events where they offer rewards to playing costumers. If you don't realize that, it's your problem.
Star Trek Online Advancement: You start with lowbie gear, you end with Lobi gear.
Personally I find it quite disgusting to send free ships out to players because they can't be bothered to play. That makes me think that logging in daily is actually kinda counter productive. Yes we had a week of free stuff but we had that for playing everyday, if people didn't get the weeks freebies it's because they didn't play. 20k fleet credits, some dilithium, 2 spec points a uniform and a t4 ship (yes 3 ships but it's t4 your NOT going to use it are you) Thats what you got this week. I'd prefere skipping all that n getting a T6 valliant. For us to get a free ship from this event people who play often now must collect 1000 vouchers, people who don't play often get one emailed to them, some vouchers to catch up and a boost for their character, because they can't be bothered to play. So if they now farm vouchers also they get 2 T6 ships from this event? Crazy. Being a long time player including a Boxed CD version of the collectors edition (meaning subscription fee's also), about £100-£200 in zen purchases and daily logins this "promo" is insulting. I see players also saying however, that they do play often and still get the email and code so personally I'd like something official stating the conditions of this promo. Perhaps then so many people wouldn't be so pissed given that most have spend money on the game to get what they have yet those who don't get it given to them. I'm pretty happy with my current ships so the what they get itsn't too important, it's the principle that counts. We put time, effort and money in, others do nothing yet get the same goods. If anything this promo will stop people who buy zen regular from buying, there is no need if they get it free in the next promo afterall.

I'm not really upset over this my own self, but a 3,000 Zen ship, for free, that's not nothing. Especially when they apparently send it to active players too. The latter, I must admit, stings (stinks?) a bit.

Exactly my point! I don't really care what they get free but the fact it would cost me and others money to get the same thing after the countless years and money spent is insane. Crypic needs to explain the promo in a lil more detail 2bh because there is something wrong here. I play a rom so I can't even use the ship but fact is they are giving people who can't be bothered to play 3000 zen when I and many others have had to buy zen. Understand the need to get more players back to the game but things like this will more than likely start turning long term players into players who need to be bribed... Why is there nothing in the Galactic news network? Why hasn't the "promo" been officially recognised? Seems like trying to slip it under our noses.. very underhanded indeed cryptic.
