I had no room for the Rezreth or free dry dock slot and not enough dilithium to get another ship slot or extra dry dock slots and had to get rid of a ship to make room for the Rezreth.
Would it be so hard to have future event ships come with a free ship slot? With Admirtaly now being a thing, it was difficult to pick a ship to get rid to make room for another.

Unless that has changed without my knowledge.
As others have said, you keep the Admiralty card even after you dismiss the actual starship. Heck, they also keep their mastery status post-dismissal. So, all those C-store and/or prior event ships "cluttering up" your shiplist slots / drydock berths? Target(s) number one for dismissal (due to extreme ease of reclaimability)

No space or free grind dil to get slots, to fit your new free event ship? Is it hard to add a free slot for a free ship to a F2P game?
Really?
Dismiss your C-Store/Event ships you aren't currently using, and dry-dock the non-reclaimable ones. If that isn't enough, 5 extra dry-dock slots cost about 6 days of refining with 2 free characters. Not trivial, but not a huge deal either.

Many players can't hit the max refine a day. I sure don't. I'm good if I hit half that amount. Only times I hit max amount is Dil weekend or finishing off a Rep. Going with that, and the very expensive Dil-Zen market. It can takes weeks to months of dil to buy it.
In this case its cheaper to buy it right from the store with my own $.

Well, with doffing, admiralty, a CCA and a couple patrols you should get pretty close to the cap with minimal effort (20 minutes?) and get enough contraband (or EC to buy contraband) for a daily turn in...

this is even more true with the introduction of the dry dock, in fact you are better off now expanding your dry dock then you are your ship slots, even if you have every lockbox ship the game has you will find it very difficult to fill the 300+ dry dock spaces you are allowed for each character.
with 2 ship slots costing 500 zen and 5 dry dock slots costing only 400 zen there is little doubt which is the best value.
as others have indicated if you are worried about admiralty i will confirm that once you have claimed a ship to get the admiralty card you can discharge the ship but the card will be retained by the admiralty system, you do not have to keep possession of the ship to retain the card.
you do not need an empty space to claim an event ship as it will come in a package but you will not be able to unpack it until you have made room in your ship roster by either discharging a c-store or event ship, or by moving a non reclaimable ship to the dry dock, be aware you cannot hot swap a roster ship with a dry dock ship so you will need a free dry dock slot to move a roster ship into or a free roster slot to move a dry dock ship into, also be aware you cannot discharge dry docked ships you will need to move them into your ship roster first.
when I first started playing sto (before dry docks) I thought it strange you would need to buy a ship slot to get a "free" ship but now I have come to realise that with a cap on the amount of slots you are allowed to have it would be unfair on players who had maxed out their ship slot allowance to give a free slot to those that had not.
When I think about everything we've been through together,
maybe it's not the destination that matters, maybe it's the journey,
and if that journey takes a little longer,
so we can do something we all believe in,
I can't think of any place I'd rather be or any people I'd rather be with.

for a similar reason as stated in my comment above this would not work with the cap on ship slots, why would it be fair for a player who has not yet reached the cap on spaces to get a free space when they buy a c-store ship when a player who has reached the cap buys a c-store ship but will not get a free space as they are ineligible to receive it.

Why do I say 3?
We get a ship grind for each event, and they are rather decent ships on average. Although tieing set pieces to them that complete a set available through a mission like they did with the Samsar was kinda dumb when there not available anymore for anyone who hasn't already gotten one.
I speak of the Kobali set. The warp core is only available via Samsar. Some might even throw in the console, as it works with the Command Cruiser set.

Regular Doff don't get you nothing much at all. I quit doing those. I waste more time doing it than the payout. Admiralty, I really hadn't gained much since the Dil is on rotation with the other Doff missions. So each one don't pay you Dil either. However the payout on the Dil and ED is better compared to Doff. I done a few rounds to see whats its like. Patrols all depends, when I have time for patrols. Since my characters are stuck doing Rep work. I don't have time to fly them to patrol and back to get Rep points. And yes I play at best 20 mins a day before work. Only time I really play is on weekends.
Dil is still not easy to get up to max Ref cap easily.

actualy, it is 3 free chars slots, after relase of new romulus expansion. And yes, geting enough zen through exchange to buy new slots for ships or drydock is short time work, depends on how much you doff and actualy play game (to earn dill).
But back to OP point - he have truth, these free ships should come with one (1) free ship slot, as it done with other games which give you something which use limited slots.
Why, now that you can reclaim them? Ships you are not using can be dismissed so they don't even need a dry dock slot.
How many ship slots do you actually need?
The answer: One. For the ship you're actively flying.
Everything else is for either convenience or quality of life. The game is not broken/unplayable as long as you can slot that one active ship.
So, getting what, 6 or so ship slots on even the most "Free" of accounts is, honestly, more than enough "convenience" for any player. Especially if said player took advantage of the new drydocking system to drydock their "unused" levelling ships - letting them hold 6 T5 / T6 grade ships.
And if they've purchased enough "unreclaimable" lockbox / Lobi / fleet ships to max out their ship slots again? The relative inexpense of ship or drydock slots compared to the investment for those 5x ships doesn't exactly have me crying in pity for the person who has that many ships.

This I agree with as well. My newest characters will have only 1 ship and that is it. Like my Delta for example. She is an Andorian. So her ship will be the Andorian ship. I will not have other ships to use, unless they release more Andorian type ships. So she will have a lot of free ship slots.

To those saying how difficult it is to get the needed daily dil...
I don't know... since I started playing again, I have found the source of Dil to be very adequate. So much so, that I can work on an alt or 2 with comfort. Knowing my main is being taken care of on the Dil front.
To me, this has been one one of the great successes for the STO team... It no longer feels like a job to get the needed Dil.

as if getting a free T6 ship that would have cost you $30 if you had bought it on the c-store is not enough of a free gift, whether you have an empty slot to use it strait away or you have to convert dil or spend money to buy extra slots if you need them is immaterial.
I would like to know what other on-line games give all of its players an end of year/Christmas gift of this magnitude and yet you are not satisfied.
here is my comparison a well known tank game - tier 3 tank + free slot and extras - value = aprox $10
I got a miller and carter gift voucher for Christmas, do you think I should ask the gift sender for traveling expenses to and from the venue as well?
